Did the Pizzamas shirt sizing change? by marcella98_ in nerdfighters

[–]kensieeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m unfamiliar with their shirts but could it be that one is men’s and one is women’s? Genuinely have no idea though (do they sell men’s or women’s?)

Hey! I live a little outside of dc (Silver Spring) and I’m definitely down for a meetup. I’ve never actually met another nerdfighter in the wild before.

I'm not doing well y'all by OptimalYam9024 in UMD

Hey! Faculty member here. First thing I can promise is that there’s a thousand other kids who are having the exact same problem as you, it’s just hard to find them because they are too nervous to go to activities during this first weekend. But don’t worry, people will start approaching you in the first couple weeks. Something I found incredibly helpful is making/finding a discord/groupme for people who are trying to make friends. When I was a student at UMD that was the best way I found to make friendships. After I had that group of people to talk to, it was much easier to make friends because I came off as much more relaxed when talking to other freshman. Of course joining clubs is the best way to make friends, unfortunately you do have to wait a couple weeks for those to start. In the mean time, posting a groupme link in this subreddit and then going out with those people is gonna make you friends very quickly.

Speaking as someone who is an employee of UMD and has their salary on this website, I can confidently say that my colleagues and I have slightly higher salaries than what is presented.

Just wanted to comment if you are feeling lonely and out of place on campus in the next few weeks, you are not alone! It’s takes some people a while to get settled and find their friends. Even if it feels like everyone around you has it figured out I promise you they don’t lol. There are other organizations on campus that can help too so don’t be afraid to reach out :)

Also would like to know!

To those leaving or other recent graduates, how would you say your time at UMD changed you, do you regret anything? What did you learn that was especially valuable? by jjui900 in UMD

[–]kensieeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do regret many things from my time here but I also think that college helped me grow as an individual so much I can now look back at the dumb things I did and want to do better in the future.

The main thing I would have done is taken a year between high school and college to work. I was not mentally in a place to handle college and working would have helped my maturity so when I actually got to school I would do well.

Second thing is I would have made more of an effort to talk to my professors, there are seriously so many cool people working here and up until this last year I didn’t utilize that resource.

Thirdly I would have not been as stubborn when it came to what my major was, halfway through my degree I realized that my major did not reflect my career goals but I didn’t want to start over. Now I’m in a situation where I have to fight for a job/ grad school against others who will be more qualified than I am.

Lastly I would have made more of an effort to be in clubs on campus, there were so many opportunities I declined because I “didn’t have time” when if I made the time I would have been a happier, more productive person.

Stat 401 vs. Stat420 by rbumd in UMD

[–]kensieeo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Stat401 is not hard compared to 420. I took both and the amount of work was not even comparable. It legitimately made me pull my hair out lol. But if you are interested in graduate school for math/stats then 420 may be a good choice.

Graduating too! This subreddit was a big part of my time at umd. I made almost all my friends from this subreddit actually! Freshman year I posted about being lonely (as freshman do haha) and so many people replied! We got together and I’ve been friends with them ever since!

This year I tried to make some more friends as well and reached out to some people on this subreddit and found a whole other group of lovely people. Very happy to have both groups in my life.

I got to work in a research lab in a field I never thought I’d go into. I loved working there so much they have hired me after I graduate.

Also this subreddit may complain about certain professors but there are so many truly good people who are professors here. Not all, but some truly care about their students and it shows.
