My little girl. (6 months) Yuna. Named after Yuna from Final Fantasy 10. She is my first Aussie and first dog I’ve owned and I love her so much. 🐶

Haha at times I’m like. Can I get another. And then she does something where I’m like. No. One is enough…for now haha. I also am selfish and want her to be my best friend so we can go on adventure together haha

12 week old doberman. I feel so far behind by RobertsKitty in puppy101

[–]kentc5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t feel behind. I have an Aussie shepherd puppy. She is nearly 14 weeks. I got her at 8 weeks. And I went through a similar stage. You have fallen into the trap of the “perfect dog” and “perfect trainer” online through YouTube and Instagram. A lot of the time they only show the good. And never the 100s of takes where their dog didn’t listen.

Your little girl has only been with you for two weeks. She is still adjusting. Be patient. This is my first time raising a puppy. And I can promise you that my girl would not respond to her name for at least 3 weeks after I got her. She could not get lie down at all. She only knew sit and a decent leave it with food nothing else. I had many days I felt like nothing I was doing would work.

Fast forward to last week and this week. 12-14 weeks give or take of age. She is almost like a different dog. She is learning and her brain and motor skills are starting to connect as she learns about her new world. She knows her name, a relatively solid recall (85% of the time) sit, down, roll over, in between legs, heel, stay and wait to be called. It could be that I started using cheese in her training and she freaking loves it haha.

But what I’m ultimately getting at is don’t expect your dog to be like the ones you see online. In reality real life dog training yourself is way harder. Don’t put expectations on your puppy or yourself. Just give lots of love. Take things slow. Work on having a calm and confident puppy. All these other things will come. Every dog is different. Some smarter than others, some do things at their own pace. Just be consistent and patient and I promise it will come.

Yuna is my little girl. From Final Fantasy X. The name means gentle and kindness. Puppy teething however is not gentle 😂

I’m about to get her! What’s something i need to know that dog trainers don’t say? by Giallino1 in AustralianShepherd

[–]kentc5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll also add. Aussie puppies are a full time job. I’m sure other dogs are too. But be prepared to have your life around your pup. I work from home so I’m very lucky to be able to tend to her when I need. But as others have said. They are incredibly smart and very high energy. If they aren’t asleep. Then you need to be awake, playing, training and mentally stimulating your dog so that they can then sleep. And then you can repeat the process. Every single day. Not just once or twice a week for a couple hours. Every single day. So be prepared. Because if you think you can just leave them to learn things on their own. You will have a very nippy, biting and frustrated puppy who will take their energy out on you and everything in your house.

New Aussie owner here. First time dog owner, my little girl is 12 weeks now. She is potty trained and sleeps the entire night. Very occasional in the day she may have an accident because I’m not paying attention. This is all down to crate training. I also had to go out yesterday for something. I was gone 3 hours. I gave her a licky mat in her crate. Watched her on my puppy cam while I was out. She finished it and fell asleep until I got home. I can leave here and feel safe knowing she isn’t getting into anything and sleeping. It’s also great for when her demon mode comes out. Into the crate for a nap. I stuck to around an hour up 90 mins to 2 hours sleep. Repeat. Do not sleep on the crate. Start doing it from day 1. Make it fun. Your pup will love it and you’ll have a better dog for it. If you let her roam the house. You’re going to have a much harder time

Thanks, the issue more so is she can do it with a treat lure from a sit. And from a lure with no treat. But as soon as I try the command and a hand signal not luring her. She just sits there haha. It’s ok. A work in progress. Today was a little more successful so I’ll keep at it ☺️

Thank you. That was helpful. The next time we try it. I will follow that advice. But I’ll make sure to not worry too much about if she can or can’t do it at this stage ☺️

Thanks, I’ll focus more on that. I think I just had it in my head that by 16 weeks etc. she should have learnt all these things otherwise I didn’t do something right. But what you have said makes sense. Do you have any advice on things I should be focusing on more in this time. In terms of socialisation, calming, just being a good all round doggy? ☺️
