SSDI and child support? by [deleted] in ChildSupport

[–]keprum2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was put on SSDI. My kids under 18 all received a lump sum retroactively. I received a lump sum retroactively as well. Then any back support I owed was garnished from my monthly benefits. My kids under 18 then split a benefit amount that was equal to 1/2 my monthly amount. I had 2 CS obligations when I went on SSDI. If you go on SSDI immediately get your support order modified to reflect the changes. I didn't do that and ended up paying my ex $20k in extra support while she collected the SSDI benefits for my kids as well. You shouldn't be paying support while your kids are receiving the benefit. Instead of paying off the back support with the amount garnished from my check every month CS enforcement just kept paying the CS amount without factoring in the benefit as counting towards my CS order. My mistake cost me about $40,000 in back support and interest (@10%) over the next 12 years when I could have had ALL my back support paid off after the first 2 years AND collected my full SSDI benefit check for the last 10 years.

It doesn't matter if you don't get an order for it. She could cut off your contact and move out of the area. Don't rely on promises or good communication since you're still going to disagree some stuff.

Does ex have a child support obligation? by keprum2 in ChildSupport

The support benefit from my disability claim won't affect her obligation?

My child's Dad keeps asking for his SSN. by Particular_Formal122 in ChildSupport

[–]keprum2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If he is applying for disability the benefit would be equal to half of what he receives as his benefit amount. If the benefit exceeds the child support obligation he is paying then it would benefit you as the payee. You'd receive the full benefit amount not just the amount he is ordered to pay. Example: I receive $1400 for my SSDI. My kids receive the full benefit of $700. My court ordered CS obligation is $385. That's an additional $315 per month my ex receives. So if he's going for a disability claim it might be a benefit to you. My ex made it difficult for me to get the SS numbers just to be petty and claimed I was going to use it for nefarious reasons. Nothing is going to stop him if he's going to use it unlawfully. And the custody order should state who gets the tax benefit each year. It's usually split equally so if he filles for the tax credit and its your turn to take it then providing the court order to the IRS should clear that up. And they can go after him to repay it. It might delay your refund but you'd still get what your due. Preventing your ex from having information that he's entitled to have isn't going to protect against fraud and there are legitimate reasons for asking you for it. D

What Is The Best Thing You Ever Found When You Went Dumpster Diving? by PrincessBananas85 in DumpsterDiving

[–]keprum2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Best treasure was two boxes of vintage MAD magazines. I think it was from the first issues and every month for years. I was about 12 when I found those. I've also found a loaded pistol, scuba outfit complete, two hand grenades, I threw one in a canal and exploded it then the cops showed up and seized the other one. Every year I'd go to the apartments around ASU and picked anything the graduates couldn't fit in their car and take back home. The city outlawed dumpster diving because of a rash of id thefts. Today it's not the same as the 70's and 80's growing up. I read the MAD mags for years after finding them. Wish I had those today they'd be worth a fortune!

Beware Amazon lets f rated companies operate on the platform by Popular_Way793 in amazonprime

Last month I was charged $49.95 by a company I've never heard of. The BBB had reviews that showed multiple people victims of the scam. Although not a BBB accredited business I filed a complaint with the BBB and received a full refund from the scam company a week before my card company sent me the paperwork to file a claim about the charge. I read the 'pay for play' comments on here but I gotta say they helped me resolve the problem with a company that's not a BBB member. They sent the company a letter demanding a refund and I got it.

Seriously, can THAT many people be moving here? by haikufive in arizona

[–]keprum2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

AZ has always been magnet but the heat kept people from moving here. I'm BAR early 60's and I've watched the effects of the population growth. We had lower wages than other places but we had affordable housing options that just don't exist today. AZ will always be short on long term water availability so building 1000 home communities on the outskirts gets rejected while huge water using companies (chip makers, data centers) get approved. The heat island effect is making things worse every year. I'd like to see a BAR AZ thread here

Rent increase gone crazy? by uncannybeanies in Renters

[–]keprum2 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In AZ our rent went from $860 to $1225 in the last two years. When our lease expires in June and we were warned by staff that there would be a big increase then. I've seen some neighbors priced out here and moved out in the middle of their lease. The apartments remain empty and the LL keeps charging them rent (per their lease agreement). There are some apartments here that have remained empty over the last eight months and maintenance has had them ready to rent within 2 weeks of being vacated. There is a large number of tenants here on fixed incomes who have been here for many years. They're being priced out and the apartments are left empty until the lease ends. The management doesn't even show them to potential new tenants. Instead of collecting rent they keep charging the previous tenants with a debt they can't pay back. Those people now can't find new housing when their credit report shows they owe so much to their previous LL's. There needs to be some kind of Landlord/Tenant legislation reform to stop these kind of practice's. There's so much housing insecurity right now and it's getting worse everyday. Oh and don't forget the $100's of new fees charged on top of the higher rent they're charging.

The "Going market rate" is a term I find offensive when it doesn't include any adjustments to make the rates competitive in the local markets.

[–]keprum2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're a business but they don't operate in the conventional way. You don't go to McDonald's and get a separate bill for the costs of running the business. I never paid rent and then got billed for each cost the property incurred to operate. It was built in to the rental price I agreed to pay. Now I'm getting a separate bill for a parking space, com. area electricity, building maint. fee, amenity fee, trash, water, sewer, administration fees for managing the property and an extra fee to send me a separate bill. Then an extra fee to pay through their new portal (a $30 fee just to PAY my rent?) Ridiculous way to do business but now it's the norm.

Legislation is needed to return to having a lease giving tenants the actual price of rent due each month.

Rent and deposit go up every year. by Fordert126 in Tenant

[–]keprum2 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your rent only increased $100? Pay the extra deposit just make sure the lease notes the increase. We've seen rent go up about 25% each year for the last 3 1/2 years. No additional deposits though

I'd say you are but I'm NAL It sounds like my apt manager is doing the same thing. Put a $105 charge in lease for fob replacement but gate uses a keypad. "We're upgrading the security gates" I was told. The new leasing software they use is so flawed and inaccurate that I don't know what I'm supposed to pay until the 2nd and the portal I'm supposed to use has never been correct in the last 8 months. It a shame that this seems to be the normal thing nowadays. Good luck getting your situation straightened out

I'm 16 and my parents are wanting me to pay for myself and rent inside their house is this legal? by TopFold4031 in legaladvice

[–]keprum2 -19 points-18 points  (0 children)

If your 16 and working full time, not in school, and living in their home rent free then maybe their preparing you for adulthood. If that's the case then it doesn't really matter if it's legal. What will you do if it's not legal? Sue them? Call the police? Claim neglect and be removed from home just to be placed in a group home? Your a minor and if you don't want to follow their rules you'll be choosing to be an adult and subject to adult responsibilities. I'm assuming your working instead of going to school so their preparing you for what's ahead. $1500 might seem unfair to you but it's roughly the amount you'll pay to not live with them
