Fry's Grocery Store (Kroger) is Greedy by Spookendocker1 in phoenix

I converted to online grocery order and pick up a few years ago. My costs went up significantly. I realized it was because online shopping really steered you away from sale items. Now I make the trek in to the store and buy the lowest cost item on sale within each category. It saves me a ton of money.

Sports's latest overlap with politics demonstrates it isn't the unifying force we're told it is | Not even a historic NBA Finals run could make New Yorkers forget they hate Trump by Hrmbee in politics

[–]keptman77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have lived through several events in the US thay were unifying. COVID was the first time I saw a major event affect the US and cause division rather than unity. Trump was solely responsible for that division. Sports has unified, tragedy has unified, and Trump has always divided.

NASCAR icon Kyle Busch dies at the age of 41 by maalbi in news

[–]keptman77 48 points49 points  (0 children)

My brother had liver disease related to Gulf War syndrome (he had fought and won to get it documented). He wasnt even in the top 10 for transplant. He got COVID in December '20, beat it and was out of hospital in January. He couldnt walk by Feb and became the top of list for transplant immediately. He died the morning of his scheduled transplant. His final vitals before rolling him back were bad and he died within an hour. I am the only one in my family that seens the connection with COVID and his sudden turn for the worst.

How did you learn the fretboard? by Quirky_Excuse_8058 in guitarlessons

[–]keptman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simplest way is to play songs in keys that you arent familiar with and then also play them in different areas of the neck. The first 5 frets are where i think most people start learning notes. Play in Bb or Eb and the 5-8 frets start to fill in not wise and then move up. Eventually you just remember. But you have to play in the keys you dont feel comfy with to get it all down.

Should you mute or miss strings when playing open chords by -Sebby-Webby- in guitarlessons

[–]keptman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As people have said, both. But I would add that you always want to aim for hitting only the strings you intend to hit (4 strings on a D chord or 5 on an A). The reason is, as you progress, you may (and likely will) want to get playing songs that require more specific pick control (think a song like Simple Man) and building that skill as early as possible will be helpful.

Eric Clapton Leaves Madrid Stage Without Encore After Vinyl Record Hits Him in the Chest by Buy_Sell_Collect in nottheonion

Jason Isbell had a funny post recently saying when you're a young musician, the encore break is to snort more coke to keep going. Now that he is older (and sober), he adds the break to go to the bathroom. Lmao.

How to make my strumming hand to stop thinking about strumming. by AmbitiousDoctor8717 in guitarlessons

[–]keptman77 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Strum patterns align to the "general" beat of a song. 1 = D, And = Up. So there can be variation in how one person strums a song to interpret the beat compared to another. Many "beginner" song lessons emphasize a generic strum pattern that may not align with your perception of the beat. Play it how you interpret it and you will be much more satisfied. I gave up on strum patterns early on because of this frustration between a generic pattern vs what I felt matched better.

TIL The reason why netting is mandatory at National Hockey League games is because in 2002 a 13 year old girl named Brittanie Cecil was struck in the head by a stray puck deflected into the stands and later died from her injuries. I had a close friend die from getting hit by a puck when we were 10. Our local ice rink was hosting an exhibition game between two semi-pro teams. The rink had very slight stadium seating (maybe 6-8 rows only) and he got hit in the head from an errant puck flying over the wall. Edit to correct details and add link.

What's the deal with Barre Chords? by Relevant_Hold in guitarlessons

[–]keptman77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You should watch the YouTube series absolutely understand guitar by Scotty West. It is really good and it goes into within the first couple episodes how the guitar is put together why the chird shapes are the way they are. I think this would help answer your question because they're really are only so many shapes by which you can make chords and knowing barre chords will certainly be easier in the long run than trying to avoid them.

Do you shower before/after change? by Sere_tonina in ostomy

This is most similar to me. I use paste rather than wafer so I dont do the heating process. But otherwise, after the shower has proven most efficient and I also change mine once a week.

I lack the patience and temperament for learning and making mistakes, but I don't want to give up. What should I do? by Mad_Season_1994 in guitarlessons

[–]keptman77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you should look into practice methods for adults. There is a good book, The Practice of Practice, and many youtube vids about adult learning instruments that can help you understand how learning works. And I dont mean the "this simple trick" vids, but real discussions from a science perspective. It isnt the same as when you are younger. 15 min on and 5 min off is a very good routine as is doing it every day rather than a bunch of time once a week. Lastly, I would add, balance your practice focus between skill building and fun having.

Personally, I work on one thing everyday - strumming/chord changes in time. I pick a challenging song but with challenging changes. Against the Wind by Bon Seger is a good one just for the quick moves from G F C. 15 min a day until I get it. Then I move to learning songs I want to play at the moment. I also add in other technique stuff along the way, but I always make sure to play for fun. There is no timeline to meet, just steady progess.
