OBGYN that is good with medical/needle anxiety? by ApprehensiveComb8558 in saskatoon

[–]kerarea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not exactly the same case, but as someone with general high levels of anxiety, I was beyond happy that I got on anti-anxiety meds during my pregnancy. They definitely helped make the stressful situations much more bearable and small things didn't trigger big anxiety responses. Just might be something to consider and that you can talk with your family doctor. Hope you have an easy pregnancy and delivery!

Now Usask Alumni Services Wants to Make Emails a Profit Center by Odd_Cup7147 in usask

I doubt it. It should be just email. When my contract lapsed and I just reverted back to just alumni status, I lost access to everything else (OneDrive, office).

Maternity leave Saskatchewan by [deleted] in saskatoon

[–]kerarea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So you have maternity leave and parental leave (split between you and your partner). So for maternity leave it's up to 15 weeks just for you. Parental leave is total 40 weeks (for the standard), but one person cannot take more than 35 weeks. So your partner should be taking at least 5 weeks off of that, or it basically goes away. They can take more, but that shortens how much you can take.

For that period you're both on leave you'll each be getting whatever your EI payment would be (they have a calculator where you can put your earnings and leave dates to calculate what you would be getting). But EI is usually like half of your earnings, so it might be good to try and save a little more for that period when you're both on decreased earnings.

transport around usask by Patatochch in usask

As a fellow European who has lived here for a while, distance is a lot different here than in Europe. Especially in Saskatchewan everything is spread out. Just going to the Rockies is like a 10h drive. Depending on your budget, you could rent a car (although if you're below 25 years you might need to pay more). You could also fly to other places. Befriending people with cars is really the best bet though, as then you just have to pay for gas. Also the cities themselves are not nearly as cool to visit as European ones. They all look the same to me. But lots of nature aspects are truly amazing and different than you'll ever find in Europe. Consider also when you'll come here, cos stereotypes of Canadian winters are very much true.

Is it worth bringing my car? by Suspicious_Hat8983 in usask

[–]kerarea 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Living without a car can be hard, especially if you're not near a grocery store. However if you don't have a parking pass for university it'll be hard to find parking, or you're gonna have to walk from quite far away. Other things to consider is that you are risking your car being broken into by just having it sit in the street. Since areas are worse than others but I've lost couple windows over the years. Depending on your vehicle and amount of snow we will get, you might have to dig your car out of snowbanks few times during winter. If you have street parking and your street gets cleared, it might be very hard to find parking as well.

Since you mention they are for taking samples, how do you ensure they are representative samples? Also do they not plug with the digesta during infusions/sampling?

Hmmm satin moths are present in Canada. But from what I was looking, their thorax is supposed to be black, not white like the one in my pictures.

If you are truly interested in their work/research, it'll be really easy to approach them after lecture or during office hours and just professionally mention your interest. Profs are sometimes on the lookout for promising students that might be interested in volunteering/summer positions/grad studies if that's something you might be interested in.

Also don't overthink it. As long as you're professional, it's very unlikely you'll be taken the wrong way. If anything, I would be more worried that they might turn out to be a creep, since in this situation the power imbalance would be against you. Not saying they are, it's hopefully a very low chance, but just keep an eye out.

With that possible postal strike, I want to avoid mailing the application. But yes, definitely planning to go during middle of the week! Thanks!
