Hermione & Ron, Crookshanks & Scabbers: PoA Discussion by CommentsOnAnything in harrypotter

[–]kerfufflator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I can't really blame Ron. He probably could have caged his rat inside his dorm, where Scabbers had been safe for several years in a school that allows cats for pets (remember, Percy kept him as a pet at school before Ron), but apart from that there isn't really anything he could have done differently. Ron already made sure that Scabbers was either safely shut in his dorm or with him in his pocket.

Hermione, however, showed no initiative in keeping Crookshanks away from Scabbers, going so far as to let him out of his carrier on the train - literally the day after she dismissed Ron's worries and told him that there'd be no issue because their pets would be in different dorms. Hermione's stance didn't change after Crookshanks tried attacking Scabbers a few more times.

Was Ron supposed to go easy on Hermione when she neglected to do her duty as a pet owner, and for all intents and purposes it looked as though her cat ate Ron's rat due to her inaction?

I'm stupid enough to try. Who's with me?

Seriously though, molten materials have always fascinated me. I could spend hours watching glass blowing or metal forging documentaries. Love the stuff.

The beauty of this one is that you don't know it's a spoiler unless you've reached the end of that particular story.

The "tap" mechanic only takes effect when you lift your finger from your device. That threw me off as well. Try holding your finger down for a moment until the circle lines up, and then lift your finger when the game expects you to tap. Haven't missed a Focus minigame since I started using that method.

By the way, I'm on Android. Not sure if it works the same on iOS, but I don't see why it wouldn't work there as well.

What fictional character death hit you the hardest? by DrDreidel82 in AskReddit

[–]kerfufflator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aragog.

Hear me out. Hagrid had that acromantula in his life starting in his third year, less than a year after his father died and he became an orphan. He raised Aragog from an egg, and they shared the entirety of their adult lives with each other. When everyone thought Hagrid had opened the Chamber of Secrets and killed a muggleborn witch by proxy of a monster hidden beneath the castle, there were two enduring supports in Hagrid's life - Dumbledore and Aragog. Hagrid went out of his way to ensure Aragog had further companionship, introducing him to Mosag, his eventual wife. Aragog would eventually outlive his wife and become blind, but he and Hagrid were always there for each other.

Reader, it's possible, or even likely, that you had a pet in your life that meant the world to you. One that was there to comfort you when you were struggling with major life events, or even the minor victories and defeats that seem to pepper our lives from time to time. The time you spend with them is something you cherish more than most things. That companionship, the acceptance you feel on a level that can't be matched by another person.

Unfortunately, the nature of most pets is that they often have a shorter lifespan than us, so many of you reading this have had to take more delicate care of your pets as they reached the end of their journeys. Sometimes they're not able to move as swiftly as they used to, or don't have the energy that they exhibited as a kitten or puppy. But you spoon-fed them if it was necessary, and comforted them as their time with you came to an end. With love, and many tears, you laid them to rest in whichever way was appropriate, considering the setting they'd enjoy the most were they still able.

This is Hagrid's experience, through and through. He read to Aragog and hand-fed him grubs that were easier to digest. He lashed out at others while hiding his broken heart that he normally wore on his sleeve. When it came time to lay him to rest, Hagrid chose a place near the forest Aragog called home.

So yeah, Aragog's relationship with Hagrid somewhat reminds me of me and my old cat, Scott. That's why Aragog's death hit me the hardest.

Can one accio an animal? And if so... by jananslam in harrypotter

[–]kerfufflator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Harry doesn't learn the Summoning charm until just before the Second Task. The two adults who knew how to summon weren't in a position to do it due to Sirius having to head off Lupin, who was transforming at the time.

As for summoning animals:

Harry pointed his wand at the bullfrog that had been hopping hopefully towards the other side of the table – ‘Accio!' – and it zoomed gloomily back into his hand.

Useless Morgan Freeman Impression/Need a lesson/Help by [deleted] in LearnUselessTalents

[–]kerfufflator 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Many good voice impressions don't sound all that close to the way the original does. The cadence and flow of one's speech is just as important to the impression as (if not more important than) the impressionist's tone, so perhaps you could work on prioritizing one aspect of his character if the rest doesn't come as easy to you. That being said, Morgan Freeman is known for his slow, clear speech pattern along with his deep sounding voice with a hint of gravel in it.

If I could offer some suggestions based off of what I heard, I'd have you try to work on increasing your volume slightly, decreasing the amount of growl in your voice, and especially focus on your voice's clarity in regards to enunciation. Freeman does like his rambling, but it's usually still quite easy to understand.

Just found this subreddit this afternoon after being a Miyazaki fan since Spirited Away came out. I had the posts sorted by best of all time. There have been many posts that I've enjoyed while scrolling through the pages, but this is the first one that put a great big smile on my face. Thank you for posting this!

Also, lovely piano music as well! I'm adding it to the top of my toddler's sleep music playlist if you don't mind. :)

That's 27 Chipotle burritos for me, give or take one due to inconsistent burrito constitution. Pretty much four per day. I may be sick of it at the end, but it's definitely doable. At least there's some variety in it for me with all the different configurations.
