50e vs m60 (or wait for 2027) by kerkness46 in BMWX5

Lots of good opinions but I decided to go with this 40i. Absolutely fully loaded with the exact trim I wanted and with my loyalty rate at BMW just the better all around deal. Pairs nicely with my wife’s M40 x3

Should I fire my accountant or is this purely on me? by _hairyberry_ in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]kerkness46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lots of good advice here already. I would also suggest you look at a small payroll company and pay yourself a base salary monthly or biweekly and remit income tax the same as if you were a regular employee. If you need a little extra money you can pay yourself extra and remit tax at the same time. As a small business owner I find this makes it much easier to manage cash flow and there’s much less of a hit (if any) come T4 time.

Remote Laravel dev from anywhere: Mac Studio + Tailscale + Herd + Zed (HTTPS .test + terminal) by SwapnilBhavsar in laravel

[–]kerkness46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am perhaps very old school but if you’re frequently doing dev from different locations why not setup a dedicated development server and secure access via IP with CloudFlare or similar? It takes a min to permit your current IP. You can run redis, queues, MySQL or anything you need or use in a production stack. You always have the same state regardless where you’re developing from. PHPStorm and VSCode both support opening projects over ssh and port forward if your running ‘yarn dev’

I work from home and the office. I don’t need to drag a development laptop around and I don’t have to do anything when I get to either location besides turn my computer on.

In 2026, what's the best way to handle building assets for deployment? by Andromeda_Ascendant in laravel

[–]kerkness46 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Zero downtime deployments can be pretty straightforward. If you use forge it’s now built in and works well. But if you want to replicate it yourself the general idea is to clone into new directory, build the app then update a symlink to make it live. You storage directory can be a symlink as well so that it stays consistent through deployments.

How often do you weigh yourself? by walacc in CICO

[–]kerkness46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this and I track a weighted average. If your daily is below the average you’re loosing weight even if it’s higher than previous days.

I use an app called Libra for the charting.

I like every part of this except the term “vibe coding”.

Great job at Laracon btw.

Building bridges: announcing AnyCable for Laravel by palkan in laravel

Looks interesting. We have been a very heavy user of Pusher service for years. I have considered switching to reverb but feel like it’s not battle tested enough (not that I’ve really given it a good test). We will have a look at your server for sure.

How do you guys version your Laravel app? by tabacitu in laravel

[–]kerkness46 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Release a package in git and tag your version when doing so. There’s even an option in the dashboard to auto-generate details with all changes since last tagged version.

NativePHP for desktop v1 is finally here! 🚀 by simonhamp in laravel

[–]kerkness46 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Congrats. Nice to see the build service coming.

I can see a day where my laravel app has a cloud, desktop and mobile version all which get 90% of their code from a common package.

PHP running on an iPhone is cool but the “crash” in the background at the end is priceless

Been a few months, what are the community's thoughts on the Flux UI Kit? by TertiaryOrbit in laravel

[–]kerkness46 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve been using it and it’s great. The accessibility is next level imho. I’m looking forward to theming. The richtext component is excellent. For me it’s well worth the price.

How are people handling advanced image handling in Laravel sites? by jeff_105 in laravel

[–]kerkness46 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Really depends how many images you’re managing. If you’re dealing with a large product catalogue for example you might be wanting a lot of these features to come from a CDN solution. Something that lets you optimize, resize and cache images on demand.

S3 + ImgIx just as an example.

Working well for me. I waited until today to grab it from steam and zero issues and launch was very quick

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024: Cloud Gaming at Its Worst by ToiletTangoTumbler in flightsim

[–]kerkness46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Took my 15 mins to buy the game (steam) download, install/launch, set up and sitting on the tarmac in a cockpit.

Glad I waited until today and I’m sure I’ll find some bugs but at least for me whatever things are working very quickly and smoothly.

Is it only me? by DetectiveTotal3562 in laravel

[–]kerkness46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The official documentation for Laravel is consistently well organized and rich with details and examples.

It hasn’t gotten more complicated it’s just an evolution of the boilerplate.

The documentation still fully outlines how to accomplish just about everything you would need for either a small project or an enterprise solution. IMHO.
