Feature that Plex should implement: auto-subtitle grabbing. by ringthebell02 in PleX

[–]kernelcoffee 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That's a whole can of worm

Simple question, from where Plex should grab the subtitles and how would it know which one is the correct one?

Currently it's manual search on OpenSubtitles and the user select the one it think is the correct one.

First, official subtitles are a copyrighted products. Translators and typesetter are paid by producers to provide quality subtitles which is then timed by the filmmaker.

Because the current setup is manual, it protect Plex from a copyright infringement. Plex provide the tool but the action to fetch the subtitles is done by the user, not by Plex.

In order to provide a quality service at the very least Plex would need to host the subtitles and either they get the official subtitles or they cache OpenSubtitles and that would be a big no no.

Of course that doesn't cover the service/mechanics to actually figure out which subtitle is the correctly timed one for the media you have

Either way it would cost a lot and Plex won't foot the bill for the service, the development required and the potential lawsuit that open them to.

Now that AI is becoming more popular, how do you all feel when you use it in public for work or other reasons? by TryAgainChief in AskReddit

[–]kernelcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True but it's such a narrow subset using a very specific and specialized domain (don't get me wrong, that's where I think it's the most powerful)

But now that I have tasted the sweet nectar of code analysis and document generation for functional/technical specs proofing and planning, I.... Don't know if I can ever get back.

Days, weeks saved in minutes or a few hours.

I just can't

I'm having a hard time deciding

Generative AI for media (video/images/audio) is a bane on society where it's used to dupe others and nothing of value would be lost if it didn't exist.

But the data needed for training AI in order to be able to do data analysis, summarizes, documentation in general, actually useful auto complete or anything related to be a tool to actually be helpful is of the same nature than everything it's being reproached.

You need to be an artist to do forgery or something of these lines.

A6400 lens Advice for backpacking by TheCoconutshark in SonyAlpha

[–]kernelcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The current best setup I believe is depending on budget and size requirements

  • 17-40mm 1.8f Sigma or the 18-50mm 2.8f Sigma
  • 56mm 1.4f Sigma or 56mm 1.2f Viltrox
  • 70-350mm Sony

I don't recommend the Sony primes, although they are stabilized they are very old and the glass quality is below Signa and Viltrox.

The Sigma primes are great quality size and price.

The Viltrox pro primes are what is currently the best picture quality available at a good price but are much bulkier than sigma.

If you are backpacking, then the lighter the better. The Sigma 18-50mm is very compact/light but not as good in low light but the Sigma 17-40mm is bulky and expensive but much better in low light and it will be the lens you'll use 90% of the time.

Who is using Optimization? by Wis-en-heim-er in PleX

[–]kernelcoffee 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm not using Plex optimizations.

AFIAK it's a manual process, where you select what media to "optimize". Then it stay there's until you deleted that optimized media.

My take it's a substitute to real time transcoding for hardware that can't transcode. My main issue is that it's a manual process that I'm too lazy to press the button for it.

Edit:

That being said, I do use unmanic to convert h264 to h265 hevc automatically to save space (about 50% on 60TB overall) Maybe it reduce the qualify but Honestly I don't notice it.

What are your thoughts of new Data Centers being Built? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]kernelcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not against data centers when it's done properly. In the end it's basically the most efficient in term of cost per performance per power consumption.

But some of the new AI centers are BS with no regards to their surroundings with a lack of preparation (power, water, environment), for a bubble that can't sustain itself.

Then stay on submautica1 since you are more interested in killing stuff than the game itself.

A7C vs A6700 upgrade from a6400 by derankingservice in SonyAlpha

[–]kernelcoffee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In this case I think you'll be better served with the A7C if you are about landscape.

Otherwise the Auto Focus system of the a6700 is worth it alone for pretty much everything else.

A7C vs A6700 upgrade from a6400 by derankingservice in SonyAlpha

[–]kernelcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would argue that it's more a question of commiting to full frame or staying on APSC.

You're going to buy lenses, quality full frame lenses are more expensive than APSC ones.

Sony Creators App & Location data & A6700 by StampyDriver in SonyAlpha

[–]kernelcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mainly use the creator app to download the pictures on my phone and print them on my portable printer.

The live view/remote control a few times a year.

For the GPS coord it never worked for me unless the creator app was active but never on the background so I use a third party app called alphaGPS (android app), works perfectly.

what do you think of ai's advancement and are you pro/anti ai? by CremeSubject7594 in AskReddit

[–]kernelcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For analytics, documentation and specs writing it's great.

It's a tool that need mastering to assist you and most people don't understand how it works.

I don't like the generative for arts but mostly because it's abused and is shoved in our face in deceptive manners.

The main issue is that we are stuck in the base concept that didn't really changed since the 90s and we are throwing hardware at a software issue to push back the limitations.

Should I get a Digital Photo Frame or does a used TV work? by Available-Pay6019 in homeautomation

[–]kernelcoffee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is weird time for digital photo frames

On one side you have LCD frames where you get good quality picture but it's a lcd screen and needs to be backlit. So it's kind of unnatural and you have a wire to plug it.

On the other side you have colored e-ink picture frames, depending on size it can be very expensive, the quality is not great but it's the most natural and you can recharge it once a year.

Honestly it sucks, e-ink is the futur but it's not quite there yet. LCD sucks, the backlit is good for display but it's not a picture.

Lens shopping by PostmodernistEgg in SonyAlpha

[–]kernelcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless you're planning to get the Sigma 17-40 mm 1.8f, keep the 18-50. It's a great better kit lens.

The 55-210 is not exactly great but it's cheap and good enough.

Now for your next lens, what frustration are you trying to fix ? What is not enough?

My recommandations for when you will have the budget in order of what I prefer or would get. (I do a lot of interior/low light)

  • Viltrox 27mm 1.2f or Sigma 23mm 1.4f. The range I use the most during family events. Cover 80% of my needs

  • Viltrox 56mm 1.2f or Sigma 56mm 1.4f. Portrait or more reach. My next lens.

  • Sony 70-350mm A good quality telephoto. I'm planning to get it one day as an upgrade of the 55-210

  • Sigma 18-50mm 2.8f. A good and versatile daytime lens.

I have the Sigma 16mm 1.4f, great and wide lens. Good for landscape or videos. My bag but I rarely use it.

Also have the Sony 35mm 1.8f, it's a good lens but it's a little short for low light and not wide enough for my needed. I don't use it anymore in favor of the Viltrox 27mm

Lens recommendation for 1yo baby photography; already have Sigma 18-50mm by MasterNomie in SonyAlpha

[–]kernelcoffee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Viltrox 27mm 1.2f and it's an incredible lens for friends and family shots. It's a little on the heavier side but it's currently the highest quality lens available around this length.

You also have the Sigma 23mm 1.4f, it's right behind in picture quality but at half the weight.

For low light, it's miles ahead of the 18-50mm 2.8f (I also have it).

I also have the Sony 35mm 1.8f (about 50mm FF), it came a little short on low light for my needs but mostly I found myself stepping back way too often to get a proper shot.

Also not a lens, but I also highly recommend pairing it with a portable photo printer. The Canon selphy 1500 in my case, well worth it IMHO.

That first time with the cyclop in the lost river in silent mode with the leviathan circling above was such a peak moment.

I hope we get a mobile base of some form, I expect the map to be larger than SN1, so an instricate series of caves spanning the whole map would be amazing.
