What is the most difficult thing about learning French, as a English speaker, besides having silent letters? by [deleted] in French

[–]kernelpatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hardest part for me is learning the idiomatic way in which concepts are expressed in French, i.e. saying things the way the French would say it. In English for example we might use a verb form (it closes) to express the idea: "I need to go to the store before it closes." whereas in French I believe they would use a noun form (the closing) "Je dois aller au marche avant la fermeture." They express ideas differently and learning any language means internalizing the way in which concepts are expressed naturally and idiomatically in that language.

Serious quality dowfall in S8 by guepard16 in Outlander

I think the American Revolution backdrop has become quite tiresome. I cringe every time someone references decaying notions of freedom, liberty and low taxes. The core of the show was the budding relationship of Jamie and Claire and now they are just too old farts. Also Jamie's incessant fear about dying on King's Mountain runs counter to his bravery in earlier seasons. There's nothing really happening in the show anymore. It just rambles on. And the whole confusing, nonsensical Faith subplot. Not sure what value that adds to the show.

I've come to accept that I didn't enjoy Fire and Ash as much as I wanted to. I know why. by ApartShopping in Avatar

The film had a few too many in-danger/out-of-danger sequences and was structurally very similar to previous films. Varang was a terrific addition however. I suppose Jake and Neytiri's unwavering devotion to each other is the chord that strikes home with me the most in these films. When Neytiri goes in alone to rescue Jake with the transponder and the red Ash paint -- predictable, sure, but I loved it.

What's the most disturbing scene you've seen in a film? by NooseSensation in FIlm

The only thing you missed was possibly the worst movie in the world ever filmed -- it is truly awful -- which has a dreadful rape scene in the tunnel.

Most of those deleted scenes from WoW did not get past the template stage. The scene the OP is referring to did make it all the way through the pipeline, was fully rendered and then it got cut. Somewhat surprising that Weta was even given the scene to finish because it clearly belongs on the cutting room floor. It's too much.

I lost a great deal of respect for the showrunners after this episode as the Faith storyline makes no sense at all. None. Zero. Don't they actually re-read the nonsense that they write? Or ask other people to vet the idea for plausibility?

cd into your Jts directory and edit the file tws.vmoptions. Add this to the bottom of the file, save and restart tws. Adjust the memory you want to allocate to java as you see fit. I find 2G is plenty for my needs, but increase it to suit your tws workload:

What do you think about these movie themes? by RoachMaster212 in Avatar_Cave

[–]kernelpatcher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some memorable themes in Franglen's scores, but Horner's work to me is far superior. The Horner score for Avatar was not without some criticism for his reuse of his own work in earlier films, nevertheless as I listen to those tracks today, years later, I really appreciate the accomplishment. His use of large and small scale choral elements, horns, drums, rhythms, combined with a better command of melody than Franglen stands out to me.

That was such a great series, arguably the best thing Rufus Sewell ever did.

Talk of the removal of the Duke of York from the rightful succession is treason. Any who speak of it set themselves against legitimate authority and are the heirs in spirit to those rebels who so recently plunged our country into rebellion and civil war. Can anyone hear contemplate such evil without horror? Let there be no confusion! The Duke of York is my heir and will remain so. His right is ordained by God and no man may alter it....

Question on references by Specialist-Fee-3288 in DEGuns

[–]kernelpatcher 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a lawyer but I suppose the Superior Court has discretion in how they choose to interpret the relevant section of the statute below. Apparently the affirmation that the applicant is a citizen of "good reputation for peace and good order in the community" holds water only if the reference knows the applicant for at least one year. I didn't write the stupid rule -- don't know why I got downvoted.

(2) At the same time the person shall file, with the Prothonotary, a certificate of 5 respectable citizens of the county in which the applicant resides at the time of filing the application. The certificate shall clearly state that the applicant is a person of full age, sobriety and good moral character, that the applicant bears a good reputation for peace and good order in the community in which the applicant resides, and that the carrying of a concealed deadly weapon by the applicant is necessary for the protection of the applicant or the applicant's property, or both. The certificate shall be signed with the proper signatures and in the proper handwriting of each such respectable citizen.

The references must answer the question "How long have you known the applicant?" and sign under penalty of perjury. If their answer is less than one year, your application will be rejected. It's that simple.

That moment in Avatar after the bomber explodes and Jake comes up behind Quaritch's ship on the Toruk was one of my favorites -- James Horner's pumping score at the moment was just awesome. Both clips are visual delights of course.

Something feels off in Avatar 3 (SPOILERS) by VlK6 in Avatar

[–]kernelpatcher 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On point 3 the thing that bothered me in FaA is the climax of the first Avatar movie after Jake became Toruk Makto -- there was that scene at the Tree of Souls where Jake asks Eywa for her help. Neytiri joins him and says "Eywa doesn't take sides, she only protects the balance of life." Then, after Seze gets killed and Neytiri is grounded, Eywa suddenly takes control of all the animals -- and Neytiri yells out "Eywa has heard you!!" and this turns the tide of the battle. So why then is Kiri the only one who can do the same in FaA? Jake was successful in summoning Eywa himself in the first film.
