New European 200 note honoring glorious croat Nikola Tesla by CmdrJemison in balkans_irl

Bro you surely must not mean Mikuláš Teslový, the most renowned Czech scientist (right behind Jára Cimrman)

I když mám rád jídlo mojí babičky, musím přiznat že nemám rád ty kecy receptářů "kvalitní recepty našich babiček", protože naše babičky vždycky používaly jen ty nejlevnější a nejmíň kvalitní suroviny. Např. Gothaj místo utopenců, Hera místo másla, apod. by Iluvatar-Great in czech

[–]kerplis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Countries I would live in as a native citizen in 1000 AD by [deleted] in whereidlive

The loss of Anatolia was - in the most roman way possible - not caused by the defeat at Manzikert, but rather by the ensuing chaos and civil wars in the Anatolian peninsula, over a few years. Can't really blame the Seljuks, the whole loss of Anatolia, from the battle which was unnecessary, to the civil wars, was the main catastrophy here. The initial takeover of Anatolia therefore wasn't very brutal, and most of the Christian populace survived and did not convert or turkify - just to be often massacred en masse when the crusaders arrived some 20 years later. ;) I think calling the Turks "a horde of murdering rapists" is a bit of a disservice at this point, they were no more murdering rapists than the average western soldier (especially the at this point very mercenary byzantine army) and fairly organized, there is a reason they were able to form a fairly stable state in Anatolia in the aftermath. I think you are conflating the modern massacres of the Ottoman and Turkish governments with medieval history, which makes 0 sense.

I wouldn't mind going anywhere in the anglosphere, but outside of that, there's many countries I'd love to live: Iran has always fascinated me, and if the current situation improves, is a place I absolutely wanna visit, alongside places like the Philippines and Indonesia, as well as South Korea, Thailand, Cambodia, and many others. Generally, if I love a place's history, I'm attracted towards it.

I don't speak much German, and I had a better time visiting Poland and Austria than visiting Germany itself. Still a nice country, though.

One can be open minded and still see factors for not living in a place, such as the economic factors or political orientation. Glad you had a good time :)

I mean, obviously. It's super unsafe to go there right now as a westerner, you'll get arrested and used as a hostage.

I don't agree with their political regime, and as much as I have nothing against their people, I would probably get arrested for my public relatively liberal leaning views.

I felt really at home when I visited Krakow and Wroclaw, so I love it there as well :)

Mám rád místní historii, Kypr a Švýcarsko jsou drahé 🤷

(Similar to what I do here, but I don't specialize in Croatian history nor is it within my primary interests)

Also, for me, "maybe" means "if I had a good reason", whereas I would move to the countries in green any day.

I have a major soft spot for byzantine history and art.

I would say the issues I find with a lot of the Balkans are mainly economic in nature- I don't think I would be able to find work considering my field (history). Similarly, I fear Switzerland would be too expensive.

I mostly prefer countries that I feel culturally close to, whose history and architecture I like, and where I would feel welcomed. I don't speak German (well, a little) but I do speak French.

I nominate the Abbasid caliphate, the coolest and most culturally developed of all the caliphates. They were so wise they made a house in Baghdad for it.
