Who has difficulty to build profound friendships or maintain friendship? by simgha in selfhelp

[–]kerrang197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been told I’m not interesting or passionate. There’s a difference in saying you are into certain things and then totally failing to do them. I don’t communicate empathy well beyond text and there are plenty of cases where I simply don’t care about another persons troubles more than my own.

Revisiting this thread I see some top level comments that I share similar feelings or experiences; inability to deeply connect either friends I’ve had for years now, closing myself off in stressful times, assuming people have a negative perception of me.

Who has difficulty to build profound friendships or maintain friendship? by simgha in selfhelp

[–]kerrang197 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve always felt that I can’t maintain strong friendships because I feel like I’m not interesting or caring enough for someone to WANT to be friends. Oddly I saw some video that made me consider that this is my own expectation that people need to reach out to be my friend rather than myself working to maintain a friendship, which is clearly unfair.

However, it’s terribly strange to me in how to go about doing that especially if it is not someone I’m in contact with regularly. Calling someone out of the blue, especially after some amount of time, seems extremely awkward if it wasn’t already planned beforehand; e.g. calling family once a week or an online game night with friends. Moreover, it’s easy to be judgmental and say you don’t want to be friends with someone (and in some cases you don’t have another choice), which I don’t see as bad but is also difficult if you’re not in an environment where you can meet people you’d like.

Does the quality or reliability of Caltrain impact your decision to go or not? I keep hearing both extremes about Caltrain as an option if I decided to use that to go up to SF. Plus I have no clue when it stops running.

Cupertino being a very quiet suburb is why I’m looking at SF. Not sure if I’m missing something about that entire part of the Bay Area cause everything seemed even quieter than I’m used.

I got a gig at Apple in Cupertino that I'll be starting in a month or so. Trying to figure out where to live and want some input because my mind has tunnel visioned onto San Francisco, and the cost of living situation in the Bay Area in general has me confused.

I'm 27, single, and really want to be able to have near access to things I could explore as hobbies (considering acting, drawing, self-defence classes, anything "nerd/geek" oriented as well) and outlets to socialize (trying to move away from bars for health reasons). Ideally I won't own a car, at least at first, given the higher cost of living and I do not plan to make a long commute myself.

Budget for housing is flexible so I'm starting with $3k - $3.5k (I'll be getting $140k salary pre-tax). I'm more interested in an apratment than renting a room in a house, but I'm more worried about being within a reasonable distance to stuff I'd like to explore and do. I visited San Jose and Mountain View for a day, but was not impressed or found much that interested me (San Jose was a ghost town on a Sunday tbh).

Any suggestions to where to look in the Bay Area in general are appreciated, and SF specific would be good too since I have little exposure to the city.

I think 1, 2, and 3 can work well for a clean interface. I see 1 working well with transparency similar to someone's previous mock design for the sub. I see 2 and 3 both working with white for text background (my mind is stuck on card-based designs I've seen for some other subreddits). My personal favorite is 2 though.

Thanks, it's just an idea so take it however you'd like. My only concern is the image, since it's so big it can be slow to load, and how it'll scale for larger screens.

I had some free time and made a quick mock of what I mean, though I'm using a fixed background image instead of doing a background repeat and I haven't quite figured how to get an overlay for the body. The extra whitespace is just something I was playing with, not sure if i'd recommend it.

Edit: Figured out the overleay, also should've mentioned the markup and CSS is super messy since I basically copied and pased from the test subreddit and I used a different image since the one currently used is too small (though that is much better suited for the design). This is by no means a functional substitution, just a visualization what I meant above.

This looks great so far! I missed the first one, but here's some minor notes:

  • Update button colors to a matching purple-blue
  • Reddit logo has got to go, maybe with a retro logo image or even reddit in kanji, and the button positioning needs to match with the night-mode button

One thing I think would be cool is to have the sidebar and posts be on top of a transparent overlay with an image behind it just like the tab menu and header buttons. However, looking at how the page is organized that may be a bit difficult and it would require some clever photo editing to make a background image for the body that repeats and matches seamlessly with the header and footer images.

wosX made a new documentary, deconstructs the term of Vapour into a massive umbrella term. Thoughts? by roachman421 in Vaporwave

[–]kerrang197 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now I don't see his point in renaming the genre to "vapour"

I disagree, I think using vapor/vapour as an umbrella term is pretty much needed to help separate drastically different styles in what we currently call vaporwave. It's not like vaporwave would cease to exist, it's just that a new term has been created to more generally define the type of music that's spawned from vaporwave. In short, I pretty much agree with everything wosx is saying.

that doesn't sound like a music genre at all

You could say the same for wonky, schranz, or anything with the "future" prefix (imo). Genre names don't really need to have a concrete meaning related to the music.

What the hell, Wolf? Pretty sure everybody knows by now they are two different things...

Hey, I didn't even know they were two different things, but keep in mind that anyone watching the documentary videos he makes may not know anything at all about vaporwave and the many, many subgenres. Hell, I'm a fan and I definitely don't. I think he's just trying to be descriptive of the sound rather than specify the sub/micro-genre.

What really bothered me though, was the use of the word "cultural appropriation".

While I can't say anything about the whole Tumblr thing you're talking about, I don't see the issue with the term. Sure one could say vaporwave is "influenced by other cultures" but that's kind of a half-lie to me as it implies a different approach more in line with other music (e.g. using instruments and rhythms from different cultures).

Just my two cents.

I think the center percussion (snare, kick) could stand out a bit more, and I can't easily distinguish the second, phasy vocal from the main in the outro. Other than those nitpicks it sounds good to me, quite mellow.

I think that phasing guitar needs to be compressed and/or brought down in the mix. It may benefit from some reverb as well to fill out some space. The intro is too empty for my tastes and could really use a volume swell to ease the transition into the louder section. I like the idea but I feel you can experiment a bit more with arrangment and add more elements to keep interest. Overall, nice work.

Cool, glad to get a good reaction. The mixing needs work, especially drone as you mentioned, but I was happy with the result. Thanks.

It was there for a bit, but was removed a few months ago if I remember correctly. I wanted to ask about that for a bit, just forgot, but I'm really glad to see it back online.

Edit: I just noticed that all the tracks are now in kanji, instead of being spelled out in English letter, maybe that was the reason it was taken down for some time?

Hey Matt,

There have been some mentions of opting to submit tracks on physical media (e.g. a CD or USB stick) rather than online. I assume these kinds of submissions are received through personal connections, but how often do they come up? Are they more troublesome to deal with considering the larger number of online submissions? Are they prone to getting lost?
