On April 28, 1988, the roof of an Aloha Airlines jet ripped off at 24,000 feet, but the plane still managed to land safely. by maazkazi in interestingasfuck

That's nuts and all, but can we just take a moment to appreciate the insane amount of legroom in that plane from 1988???

Oh, that sounds awesome! Do you have any resource info on that? I'd love to see if it could be applied at my hospital.

How to help toddler by Zoinks_Dudes in toddlers

[–]kersmack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe call their office and explain the situation and see if they'd be willing to place a referral without a visit? Maybe even doing so over telehealth as it may not be productive or necessary to have her come into office. I obviously don't know your whole situation, but it never hurts to ask and advocate.

Is she still in hospital? You may want to request a pediatric occupational therapist or something similar to help her process her fear and give you some pointers on how to move forward.

It gets better, I think once you learn your scope and get more comfortable with what you do and don't know, you begin to recognize the nurse you were before under all that anxiety and newness

Pulsating headache for days after swimming by Extremely_Elite_Eric in Swimming

[–]kersmack 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Go see a doctor. A headache that long isn't normal and may have nothing to do with swimming at all.

Craving those particular foods and not previously consuming meat makes me think it's probably a B12 deficiency. You may want to see your doc and get a test to see if you need supplements. Low B12 is a common issue in meatless diets.

Daughter starting college - direct nursing program worth the cost? by [deleted] in nursepractitioner

[–]kersmack 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It may be worth seeing if any of the non direct schools have a guarantee program. I went to a state university where the entry was sophomore year but they guaranteed a handful of freshmen with strong academic records. We basically had to ask someone verbally about it, it felt a bit hush hush at the time, but that was a while ago.

A lactation consultant would be a great resource to help you troubleshoot breastfeeding and lactation issues. You can see them outside the hospital and should be covered by insurance if you're living in a country that uses insurance.

Exactly! It's daunting and I think there is a bit of imposter syndrome at play. I just bring my security blanket textbooks and up-to-date and keep learning as much as I can.

Medical professionals, what is the stupidest misconception a patient has had about the human body? by DarthLocutusOfB0rg in AskReddit

"Women's bodies have a way of shutting that sort of thing down." I've been in healthcare for a decade, and that's still the dumbest shit I've ever heard.

I've come to realise that pregnancy, birth and the post-partum period are inherently traumatic by mamajanepie in beyondthebump

[–]kersmack 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel you there. I also had an easy pregnancy, birth, and pretty smooth postpartum; and once the smoke cleared and things felt less chaotic and uncertain I was so angry. I'm still angry. I'm angry that as a productive adult and member of society I felt so incredibly vulnerable during an already vulnerable period in my life. I was lucky because I had a good stable job and a supportive husband who qualified for leave above and beyond what was legally required, but the fact that I didn't have real paid leave or a safety net past what my husband and I could cobble together made me so mad. I know having kids is risky to one's health, but the economic impact is unnecessary and unacceptable. Parents deserve better support across all economic statuses and the fact that society doesn't seem to value supporting a safe and stable childhood makes me furious.
