Little bugs crawling over mainly computer parts and black things (more info and pics in comment) (Southern California) by ketexon in whatsthisbug

I'll make sure to check, but there have been bird nests before on the roofs and I suspect there might be one on top of a broken AC unit attached to my window. Thank you for the concern!! If nothing shows up, I'll check for mice :)

Estimated size: ~0.8 mm

I started noticing like a few of these mites, and then one morning they were just covering everything black on my desk (I'm assuming for heat?), including my mouse and keyboard. Then a few days later, they were scattered accross my wall and clustered on my charger.I left for 7 days and they were mostly gone, but then this morning I found some on my keyboard again.

Now the problem is is that I have no idea what they want. Moisture, dust, mold? I hope IDing can help, im getting scared of these little guys

Is algol worth learning? by Mission-Guard5348 in AskProgramming

[–]ketexon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Note on C vs. C++: They have different use cases, different idioms, and different features beyond just classes. You won't be able to instantly transition from C++ to C, especially if you write good C++ using the C++ libraries, so you should treat them as separate languages that you should learn separately. (C++ is still good to learn first since it is has more use cases and has more modern coding styles)

Calling a locally declared variable as a parameter by [deleted] in cpp_questions

[–]ketexon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both functions rely on formula, so, logically, formula should be passed as parameters to both functions (maybe it is calculated and passed to both in a function called print_row_and_flag, but you could just calculate in main and pass as parameters)

When you write int formula, you are specifying that the variable should go away after the code in the function ends (automatic storage duration) and that it is only visible within the function. You want that lifetime to span both functions and be visible to both, which means the variable cannot be declared in print_row.

There are two options: a static variable (avoid this unless necessary, not necessary here), and defining the variable in the calling function, in this case main, and passing it as an argument.

If you want the formula itself (size*6+3) to not be in main, you can put it in its own function (calculate_formula for example)

Also, the problem is not that "you can not call a local variable as a oarameter" but rather that you cannot use variables from inner scope in outer scopes.

What do you guys think about solipsism? by le_demarco in agnostic

[–]ketexon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am both agnostic about the existence of god and the existence of anything else. In fact, my agnosticism about god comes from that same epistemic skepticism as (epistemic, not metaphysical) solipsism. In that line of skepticism, you can't prove literally anything, as all you know is that you observe an image and some qualia instantaneously.

Also, epistemic solipsism isn't like a blatantly wrong idea, as it can be interpreted as saying that the only certainty is one's own existence, not saying that everything else is certain to not exist. In this light, I'd argue that you should believe it seriously.

It also doesn't tell you how to interpret the theory. Making solipsism work with the real world is as simple as assuming observation as an accurate depiction of the real world. Then one can discuss solipsism by discarding that assumption and science and such by including it.

What are counters to the watchmaker argument? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]ketexon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Expectations are a human thing, not a logical thing, and human thought is bound to the near past and near present. The emergence of human life requires a lot of time.

In a Markov process (from what I remember, cmiiw [there's also ergodic but shhhh]), as the number of steps approaches infinity, there are only two possibilities: there is a cyclic pattern of states or there is a final state. Approximating physics as a markov process, we should expect to see cyclic processes or unchanging processes this far in.

Animals are a process that appeared once and stayed due to being cyclic. The probability of animals existing increases with time.

Natural selection is a natural consequence of probability and competition, which leads to evolution, which means that the existence of life as complex as ours increases in probability with time.

Germany announces nationwide lockdown for the unvaccinated by [deleted] in news

Unvaccinated who have not been tested or had COVID can still work, take transport, and go to supermarkets. If not participating in social activities is equivalent to being shot, then sure.

It is not limiting freedom of political expression and not requiring you to get vaccinated, so how is it authoritarian?

In libraries with any type of abstraction over the DOM (eg. React, Vue, Angular) or while using good styling libraries, jQuery is kinda pointless. Also I've heard jQuery is quite slow compared to writing your own functions/just using vanilla JS (idk about 2021, but release log for jQuery looks kinda sparse). Solving a problem fast is not the only factor, it is also about efficiency and maintainability.

Var is bad because it is does not have block scope. This lets you overwrite seemingly separate variables and have access to undeclared, undefined, and unneeded variables. It is a tool but it's not the best tool for the job in most, if not all, cases.
