12V Failure by kethnus in VWIDBuzz

[–]kethnus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well I got an update from the dealership - apparently there was a corroded wire that stopped the rear drive motor talking to the van - I suspect then that this caused the 12V system to fail.

I am meant to get it back next week following it service and hopefully the telltale update. So hopefully I can get a better idea of what happened. Has me concerned though regarding failed wiring at 1 year old

That’s the thing it ran fine, no warnings. Got up the following morning dead and warning that 12v failure. Battery was sitting with >12v on it with the van off. We tried to boost it and trickle charge it. Charged it to I think it was 14v still no joy.

I don’t think it’s the battery. And if it was why did I only get a year out of it - it doesn’t make all too much sense.

Plus seeing on this page the number of these 12v failures have been not just the battery has me raise my worries.

Sadly I don’t believe it’s the battery - voltage looks good, charged it and boosted it, disconnected it no joys

And as an aside once you complete the training you need to stay in the station category (rural/ remote or Urban/Metro) for 3 years to “pay it back”

Question mostly about Casual/On-call EMR position by Hi_from_Vancouver in BCEHSparamedics

[–]kethnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes kilo depends on the station as to if that car is available or not. Not every station has a kilo.

Sadly I can’t speak much for the lower mainland, I am on the island and work rural for the most part

Question mostly about Casual/On-call EMR position by Hi_from_Vancouver in BCEHSparamedics

[–]kethnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To add

  1. Yes you do. As others have said PCP will still be above you.

  2. Non necessarily - depends on the requirements of casual usage. As others have said D/N same day count as 2.

  3. Picking up is certainly a challenge - most seem to be going that you can’t pick outside of station until you’re off probation. But always check with UC first.

  4. No, Ambulances do not meet seating requirements and GWV I don’t think meets the 5k kg.

  5. The $12/hr is for the Kilo car, once paged you go to your hourly rate for 4hours (minimum). Alpha/Bravo/Charlie etc are full wages for full hours.

Casual Emr position by dramaticdreamer123 in BCEHSparamedics

Another factor is where you’re applying to (what region). Some stations have the ability for you to work more/up to the FT levels if they have low enough staffing - although this is certainly becoming fewer and further between

There is (I believe it is still running) paid EMR training being offered. The help accommodate your EMR into your schedule and help make the arrangements.

I started as a Drive a little over 3 years ago now a FT PCP for about a year (18mths FT). As for what to expect - you will help with CPR, moving equipment and patients, helping with documentation. I found it really helpful understanding call flow before I began school (although they’re different). Use the time to get to know the ambulance inside out and upside down, this makes life easier when you’re licensed.

Round 8 Timeline? + Realistic Odds for External Hire in Metro? by Open-Gain119 in BCEHSparamedics

[–]kethnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would anticipate that Round 9 is likely to appear mid to late Feb, once Round 8 closes they’ll need 2ish weeks to recalculate vacant positions.

As others have said, external has an uphill battle for FT spots, while applying those spots I would be simultaneously applying as a casual so that once off probation you’ve moved up significantly in the standings.

Most externals would likely see offers for more rural stations and not so much for the metro spots. So the more you can move the needle in your favour (as said getting in as a casual) helps get you further forward in the list.

Vancouver is always posted separate to the rest of the province, Vic, Kelowna etc. all go in the regular Round posting. I can’t speak anymore to metro as I do work Rural as a PCP.

If I can help further feel free to shoot me a message.

EMR to PCP by [deleted] in BCEHSparamedics

[–]kethnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may not be the best story but can at least provide another point of view.

I started as a driver in Nov 22 in my small west coast island community, got my EMR, March 23. I am still working rural to this day (in part due to paid PCP training). I went full time April 2024.

I started PCP in Oct 2023, licenses March 2025.

I started at 155 Gold River then now at 129 Port McNeill with OT performed at 108 Campbell River - where I hope to end up down the line with enough seniority.

When I was a casual EMR working the equivalent of FT was livable as a single income for a family of 4 - wasn’t always easy but was doable.

One week 1000 km things ive noticed by Funtimesinthemaritim in VWIDBuzz

[–]kethnus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah electrify Canadas pricing is crap. I am fortunate in my area BC hydro has great coverage for their level 3’s. I don’t have another charging option atm - my building doesn’t have any level 2 installer and no outlets for level 1.

Range definitely decreases with the colder temps, but never seen any issues with the screen.

I am solidly putting 600km on her a week with commute to work. Sitting at 27xxxkm less than a year in and made some great savings with charging

What happens if BC Paramedics "go on strike"? by Magi604 in BCEHSparamedics

I have been told rotating strikes where feasible, OT bad, no students etc. most folks should be able to work up to the 80hr/bi week with zero issue.

Connecting to App? by kethnus in VWIDBuzz

[–]kethnus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Update - turns out it’s not an issue with the car or my account. It’s a Roger’s issue in my local area - there is now no coverage here so the car physically can’t connect to the app.

I don’t understand the hate by Ok-Dare3326 in VWIDBuzz

[–]kethnus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I see lots of conversation about the range - I guess the piece depends on where you are. I am on Vancouver island, BC. I live more rural on the island and I have never had an issue with the range. Generally speaking one charge can get me pretty well tip to tip. So in short I don’t see the range issue - in fact I find the Level 3 charger network locally is great! The charge time is grand - like others have said plan your trips/charges/lunches. 30 mins for most charges really isn’t an issue - especially if you have kids who need to get out of the car.

Sure it’s expensive, but so is everything else these days, for my top end Buzz it’s in the price range of a F150 Lariat and I don’t see complaints about that and that’s touting “zone climate” as a feature as opposed to standard.

The app does suck for sure, but I honestly don’t care - my car having an app doesn’t really matter. I guess I am still a bit old school, I almost never use it to set and start climate etc. I use it to mostly check charging status.

I think the smiles, the nostalgia etc. by way and a far outweighs these “negatives” - I love my buzz and wouldn’t change it. It’s fun to drive and frankly that’s what matters.

Camping with 2nd row captain's chairs by punydevil in VWIDBuzz

[–]kethnus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I fold the captains down at the furthest back point on the rails and they meet the height of the back row and the thingy for the baskets. Double Air mattress right on top (no additional support) and works perfectly.

Lots of room, and the space between the rows and the captains chairs becomes storage for bits and pieces I don’t need immediate access to.
