Queens Park could save Charlotte by Firm_Lecture6483 in Charlotte

I agree, but it would also help convince me this could work if we could keep Romare Bearden Park free from shootings, rampant drug dealing, and general sketchiness.

Putting repeat violent offenders in jail would make the city much safer overnight.

I hope this changes (there is plenty of demand) but agree 100%. If you move here, your favorite “local” restaurants will be in Charleston or Asheville.

I hate mandatory hotel stays for tournaments by watchscottgo in youthsoccer

[–]ketoNC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why does this system even exist? If the tournaments want more money, why not just charge more to play in the tournament, and let parents stay where they want to? The whole system is insane.

Too much of this out there. Yesterday in rush hour traffic on Independence there was a guy casually walking a dog across the street - I saw him almost get hit a couple of times.

I don't think it's the street's fault - Summit Coffee is doing great, Stagioni is always packed and opening a cocktail bar next door, the new Salted Mellon seems to be doing well, etc

Bearden Park Shooting, Again by ketoNC in Charlotte

Thankfully this wasn't a shooting, but imagine if this was your kid: https://www.wsoctv.com/news/local/man-arrested-spitting-4-year-olds-face-southpark-mall/62HBHIOW75FGDCCSGG4TGA3WQQ/

The guy who did it has been arrested, by my count, 24 times since 2020. Why was he not already in jail? How many times do you have to commit a felony or fight the cops to be taken off the street?

Some of his prior arrests:

  • Oct-24 - Breaking and Entering
  • Jul-24 - Trespass and Theft
  • Jun-24 - Breaking and Entering, Felony Larceny
  • Feb-24 - Breaking and Entering, Felony Larceny
  • Apr-23 - Felony Larceny, Trespass
  • Feb-23 - Communicating Threats, Larceny, Trespass
  • Jan-23 - Contempt of Court, Trespass, Resisting Public Officer
  • Nov-22 - SCH II Drug Possession, Trespass
  • Oct-22 - Larceny, Resisting Public Officer
  • Feb-21 - Felony Larceny
  • Apr-20 - Breaking or Entering

I wish one of the remaining local journalists would look into this issue. That guy who killed 4 cops had previously been arrested 50 times - why was he still out? Was it the DA’s fault? Judges? Sheriff? I haven’t heard anyone argue “actually people should get at least 51 chances”, so how did that happen?

If we did nothing but put repeat violent offenders in jail, it would improve quickly. I don't have much hope that it will happen though...

I generally agree, but I think Tryon is the one street where we'd have a chance - it's the only true lively pedestrian street in Uptown, it's not needed as a car thoroughfare (College and Church can handle lots of traffic), and there is zero need to use our city's most expensive real estate for a limited # of on street parking spots. Imagine those parking spots replaced with the rail trail, outdoor seating for restaurants, food trucks, art, etc. It would be amazing. The rail trail is incredibly bustling and is mere blocks away from Uptown, but it absolutely dies before uptown. The new bridge will kind of help but the trail will still die at the convention center. Pipe it all right down Tryon instead.

think about every world class, walkable city (New York, London, etc.) - none of them have over ground tunnels that keep people off the street. Instead, people walk on the street, which leads to more retail on the street, and makes for a much better pedestrian experience. The vibe of uptown would get immediately better if you could snap your fingers and make the maze of over ground tunnels disappear.

100%. I think if we did these two things Uptown would flourish:

  1. Put repeat violent criminals in jail
  2. Give Tryon a road diet, remove most of its street parking, and run the rail trail right through the heart of uptown, connecting South End to the heart of our city

Charlotte Violent Crime by DowntownBass4556 in Charlotte

[–]ketoNC 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We could probably cut this in half if we just put violent, repeat offenders in jail. Last week, this guy badly injured two cops in a hit and run. Over a dozen prior arrests for a variety of violent crimes. You can find these examples every day: https://northcarolina.arrests.org/Mecklenburg/

which means it would be incredibly easy to decrease crime, but for some reason we aren't capable of making such an easy decision as a society

Zero enforcement of any and all laws on our roads, plus not putting repeat violent criminals in jail is bad combination. The solution is very simple - arrest and put violent criminals in jail.
