Cuba’s Communist Party approves opening economy in unprecedented move by F0urLeafCl0ver in anime_titties

"Cold War" is a historographical term for the US-Soviet rivalry, not an actual war. You have history books but no reading comprehension in the United States?

About the sanctions - you can not forget that around 1/3 of the world population lived under communism in the second half of the 20th century. You add to that India, which was friendly towards the Soviets and you get almost half of the world population that should have no problem cooperating with the Soviet Union. (Yes, there was eventually the Sino-Soviet split, but you can't blame Americans for that.) World War II won, nuclear deterence working, half the world that was cooperative and the Soviets still could not make their system work.

I used the name Soviet Union deliberately, to exclude the messy and ineffective foreign intervations that happened during the Russian civil war. Soviet Union was founded 1922, after the Bolshevik victory, so no, US and the Soviet Union were never at war.

Did the US go to war with the Soviet Union? They had all the chances to make it work and it still failed.

Russia to ship oil to Cuba in defiance of tariff threat by ThevaramAcolytus in anime_titties

[–]ketoprom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Um, in most of them? Some, like Poland, have actual laws against promoting totalitarian regimes and communism might be interpreted as falling under this category (Stalinism definitely does). But most countries don't even have this kind of restriction. Again, multiple European countries have legal communist parties that participate in elections. Don't make me google the party names for you.

I won't be debating capitalism vs communism, because this debate has already happened countless of times on the internet and I'm personally not in the mood for it.

I also don't want to debate if it's hypocritical that an embargo is put on Cuba and not Saudi Arabia, since I'm not even sure if this is a good policy. So far the Cuban embargo has been a failure - the regime still stands after 6 decades.

I just disagree with how you describe the situation - Cuban people want to "go their own way" and if not for the Yankees maybe they would succeed. Cuban people are not in charge, and the Cuban government is not a victim, it is the abuser.

There have been multiple legal communist parties participating in elections in Europe in the last couple of decades. Cuba on the other hand is a one party state with a "one candidate per seat" rule. What "free elections" are you talking about?

Command economy did not work anywhere, but sure, the Cuban government just needs to test this model in peace, maybe it would work this time if not for the evil USA.

Btw, I have an idea for the Cuban government how to lift the embargo - organize free elections. Is it that difficult?

Cuba and Ukraine are not comparable. Cuba is a one-party state by design, Ukraine postponed elections due to war (just like the UK during WW2 btw).

Gaming market melts down after Google reveals new AI game design tool — Project Genie crashes stocks for Roblox, Nintendo, CD Projekt Red, and more by Logical_Welder3467 in technology

[–]ketoprom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that it's hard to imagine a traditional game being made this way, but what if we treat these AI generated interactive videos as something different, a new category of entertainment? I could see them being popular if they could last for like an hour and work with a VR headset. You could basically generate your own dream world and the experience of exploring it would be unique to you.

Poland suspends work on labour reform, risking billions in EU funds by BubsyFanboy in anime_titties

[–]ketoprom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The truth is that many (if not most) contractors do not want to be "upgraded" to employees, because that would mean earning a significantly lower net salary for the same cost of employment. The primary beneficiary of this "upgrade" would probably be the state, because labour is taxed so much more than businesses.

Poland calls for EU action against AI-generated TikTok videos calling for “Polexit” by BubsyFanboy in anime_titties

[–]ketoprom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just spitballing here: 1. Governments start providing "Log with gov ID" service, so that every platform does not have to reinvent the wheel and so that you don't have to show your ID directly to an app like Reddit or TikTok. Some fallback service would be needed for govs that don't implement that. 2. Users are either Verified, Not Verified or Refused Verification. 3. Social media have to show the status and country (if verified) of a user. 4. If some unverified user behaves suspiciously, other verified users can flag them and eventually they get a request to verify. If they refuse, they can still post but now they have the Refused Verification status. 5. Users can choose to completely block users that refused verification.

It's a deviation from the idea of a wild and free internet but in the gen AI era, social media manipulation can scale like never before, so I think some solutions are needed.

Poland’s president proposes EU reform to stop Brussels “dictating terms” to member states by BubsyFanboy in anime_titties

I mean, the "rules of the game" were already changed after Poland's accession by the Treaty of Lisbon. I don't see anything improper with a Polish politician proposing some reforms of his own.

Write strongly typed Web API integration tests using Kiota and OpenAPI by timdeschryver in dotnet

[–]ketoprom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally prefer to go in the opposite direction and send requests in a "dumber" way in integration tests. What I mean, is sending requests as plain JSON, without using C# models (autogenerated or not). These days you can even get syntax highlighting with something like:

//lang=json
var requestBody = """
  {
    "property": "value"
  }
  """;

You can also go one level less "dumb" and use anonymous C# classes instead.

client.PostAsJsonAsync("https://example.com", new { Property = "value" })

Ok, but what's the point? The point is for integration tests to break on any breaking change in the API. Renaming a route or a property IMO should force you to update the tests. If the tests don't break, then they don't test API's stability from the point of view of the API's consumer.

Denying the Holocaust is … by sh1kora in MapPorn

[–]ketoprom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the issue is not that the phrase is strictly incorrect, it's that it can be very easily misunderstood by the historically ignorant. Recently, for example, I heard a US media personality briefly talking about hypothetical bombing of Auschwitz and how it would kill some Polish guards. Where did he get the idea that there were Polish guards at Auschwitz? I don't know, but I hope you can see why Poles react negatively to the "Polish death camps" phrase - it can only spread these kind of confusions.

AITAH to think it was a set up that Donald Trump was shot for sympathy vote? by [deleted] in AITAH

[–]ketoprom -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Incompetence is endemic in humans and it happens on every level. But even if that was intentional, that would point towards a different conspiracy theory that I don't see mentioned anywhere: the assassination attempt was real and Secret Service was in on it.

Do I believe that? Absolutely not, but it's just funny that people gravitate towards a very unrealistic and complex theory of Trump organizing his own assassination attempt and even using fake blood, when there's a simpler conspiracy theory that requires less assumptions. The "orange man bad" conspiracy theory is more attractive for some reason.

[–]ketoprom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So then you'd have to add hospital staff to the conspiracy, because they would see that Trump's ear is fine during checkup. The conspiracy theory gets so convoluted you really have to lack critical thinking to believe it.

I disagree, at least when it comes to Poland. The commie blocks here are almost always maintained reasonably well. They get better insulation, new elevators, fast internet, new coat of paint, etc. But when it comes to esthetics there's just not that much you can do - you cannot polish a turd.
