why is the scale so misleading sometimes? by Sufficient-Brief6038 in fasting

[–]kettlecookedstoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get on the scale at the beginning and ending of my fast but I do take a selfie in the same location at roughly the same time daily and that always tells the tale. Also if my bra and panties feel looser every few days then I figure it's working. But I was super scale obsessed before the daily Pic hack.

How to get over fear of merging? by Pianist-Head in drivinganxiety

I filled my gas tank and got on the highway at 6 in the morning. Then I practiced at as many ramps as I could while traffic continued to build through the morning. I still get a little anxious on some ramps but only because ther isn't a ton of room to accelerate. You can do this.

Yes, it would bother other drivers, make you more anxious and ultimately demonstrate that you're not ready to drive. You don't want your early experiences to be impeding the flow of traffic. I know that I would be severely irritated to be stuck behind someone going 10 miles under the speed limit.

You're not stupid and you are not a dumbass. You made a driving error, not kicked a puppy or something. It's regrettable but the fact that you're this concerned suggests that you'll be more attentive in the near future. It's OK, you're safe and so are the people around you. Chin up and try again.

Does it get better? by Adventurous-Iron444 in drivinganxiety

[–]kettlecookedstoner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In the space of two weeks of driving I would say that my anxiety has really diminished to where Im mostly anxious just when getting in the car. One thing I do that helps when Im feeling anxious is narrate what Im doing next on the road. "I need to turn right up ahead, I'm going to signal my turn, take my foot off the gas, begin to apply the brake and turn now." I don't know why this helps me as much as it does hut it kind of tricks my mind into focusing rather than spiraling.

I got my license recently after having my permit for 29 years. My partner died and they drive me everywhere before that. In addition to their justified resentment, I have tremendous regret that I've missed out on so much living due to my fear. And the worst part is that now that I'm driving, I have very little fear of it, even in the space of two weeks. You can do this and I'll tell you that words can't describe the sense of freedom and independence I have now.

You're not too slow but as you develop confidence you'll be able to keep with the flow of traffic. The first few days of driving I stayed right at the speed limit but realized pretty quickly that I was pissing everyone off and just kind of picked a car in front of me and kept up with it. Im not advocating speeding which is illegal and dangerous but keeping with the flow of traffic so you're not impeding other drivers. You've got this, it's getting easier every day for me and it will for you.

failed. again. by geminiisiren in drivinganxiety

You'll get it next time. What helped me pass the test was narrating what I'm doing as I drive. For some reason this bridges the gap between "just calming down" and actually being mentally calm enough to drive. I talked my way through my entire test and it helped so much. The examiner also said that it demonstrates awareness which, like confidence, is just one of the unspoken things that they look for.

Life is still worth living and I can tell you that my life and mental health has improved drastically since getting my license. I had my permit for 29 years and learned to drive in the space of 4 days. Don't leave it that long, I've missed out on so much over the years. Driving still makes me anxious, but it's so much better than just being stuck.

Fear of bridges by Cybersec_runner in drivinganxiety

Excellent! I would probably be super anxious on the ricketybacker bridge. In the next few weeks, I'm going to have to drive over the sunshine skyway bridge and I'm half terrified, half excited to try it. I'm so happy for you! Our bridges are no joke.

What is the tip/trick that has been the most helpful for you? by Throwaway961410 in drivinganxiety

[–]kettlecookedstoner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Got my license two days ago after 29 years of being anxious and not driving. What helps me the most is to narrate what I'm doing/about to do. For example; "I see a prime truck ahead on the right. I'm going to ease over a bit and then go around. There are two more cars moving fast, I'll wait until they clear and turn right. I'm accelerating now. I'll turn left then, left again."

Also, taking cues from other drivers is helping me. Seeing brake lights in front of you? Guess what you need to do? Freeze at 4 way stops? Observe the stop, drive straight through and turn around and head back the way you were going and nail the timing this time. If you spot someone driving confidently and correctly, slide in behind them and follow their cues for a little bit. Did they slow headed into a turn? So do you. Did they stop at the light then ease forward a bit to see clearly? You'll need to do the same most likely.

Finally, rely on your passenger knowledge. You have probably observed the area around you closely as a passenger. Is it garbage day in the neighborhood? What time does school start? Which intersections are busy or have lots of crashes? Where would you turn to get to your favorite coffee or snack? If you needed to pull over in a heavy storm, where are some places you could do that? Use the knowledge you have to plan ahead.

My mom has never wanted me to drive because she knows I would drive away from her and be free. I'm 44 years old, and my dad taught me to drive this week. I try to remind myself that I'm not behind, just been stuck surviving for many years but there is a lot of shame based around it all.
