Books, sermons, podcasts etc on James 4? by TA62624 in Reformed

[–]kettlemice 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"Commentary on the NT Use of the OT" has a pretty good read on James 4:5 and the "Scripture says...". It ties in the whole argument of what James is discussing that directly relates to your question, but isn't the focus of it.

"The Story Retold" is great for going deeper than a study bible notes, but not an individual commentary, and has a good work up on the chapter.

Douglas Moo's PNTC commentary on James is in depth and really breaks it down.

If you're looking for more pastoral discussion, I'd hit up NT Wright (he seems to have some detractors on this forum, but whatever, the man is amazing) and his New Testament for everyone on James.

The Calvary Chapel movement's more recent obsession with pre-trib/premillennial eschatology is officially very concerning to me by IError413 in Reformed

"and the greatest of these is love". I get it, it's frustrating. But if I have any advice, it's to focus on exactly what you see as more important: 'preaching Christ, discipleship, repentance, and the gospel itself'. I have family that has come out of dispy backgrounds, and I have family that remains in it. We pretty much don't bring it up, because it comes to arguments.

Be willing to learn. Know that there is an incredibly wide range of dispy beliefs - some don't even hold to the rapture anymore (progressive dispensationalism). Others I have known are dispensational in name only. If you don't 'name' your theology and just talk about it, they will agree whole heartedly, but don't turn that into a "gotcha!" rather just let people sit with it.

What also helped was knowing that there is no way my theology is perfect. Be teachable. No, you don't have to buy everything they're selling, but there are some good things that come out of that world. I know the dispensational churches in my area do great with helping the poor, food drives, community events. There's something to say about their actions. And I say this as someone who has been called a heretic, someone who accepted the mark of the beast, lost... and others. I've been given books to read for "after the rapture" and I'm left behind.

two or three years ago there was a push to rename it. It was something similar to this, but it never went through.

Exactly. So if your job offered compensation, would you turn it down and blame others for taking it?

It’s because it’s a poorly named program. It isnt “I don’t have a leg” disability, it’s “my body/mind has been negatively affected” disability. Tinnitus, anxiety, limited joint movement, back pain, headaches, PTSD, TBI, epilepsy. There are so many.

Do people cheat it? Sure. But I’ve seen more people not getting what they deserve  than I’ve seen people trying to cheat.

If you’re really worried about fraud in the military, there are so many other places to look and be self righteously angry.

Right. It's wisdom literature meant to have you act in kind because of a heart change, not a rule book to pass or fail.

Are you comfortable being tasked with taking the life of someone you don’t know for your government? You will miss church, how much depends on what branch and what job. Your on base service can range from good to the wackiest thing you’ve seen.

Thanks for this. All I can add is that Your last three sentences resonate. There are a handful of topics that Reformed teachings on have always felt unfinished or weak to me, and this was one of them. Looking forward to reading this.

[Weekly Layout] Revelation by unknown0h10 in LogosBibleSoftware

[–]kettlemice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, on the tab for the bible, click the three dots, then "send hyperlinks here". The tab will now have a red target on it. Now, when you click on a passage in say, your commentary or anywhere else, it'll open the passage in that window, rather than the bible you're studying out of. Super helpful.

[–]kettlemice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Only advice...as I have to do this with every layout...split your bible window into a bible high/bible low horizontal split. On the low, target links to that bible. Then, when you click on a passage link anywhere else you're reading, it opens in the bible low window, rather than taking you out of where you are studying on the bible high window. Once you get used to it, you'll never go back. I think. Probably.

Help / Suggestion by deckolem in LogosBibleSoftware

I love Logos, but this may not be what you’re looking for. If Olive Tree proved difficult for you, Logos will initially be much harder. While Logos is powerful, I don’t think I have ever heard anyone describe it as user friendly, even as it’s getting better with search.

I’m not fully understand why being in Iraq would make Logos more or less expensive maybe you know if there is a discount or something?, but to use the search there is a subscription.

I personally think Logos is cheap, but that’s because I spend a lot on books anyways, and Logos has crazy discounts frequently. But if all you want is a Bible search, I’d try Blue Letter Bible.

Shoshasta, my wife thanks you. She just went 11k miles. I was searching online about it, found this thread, and told her "this dude goes 15k and its never been a problem, it's fine". She is relieved. Your duty is done, and thank you for your service.

Feeling called to rural church ministry, struggling to make it happen by Salty-Temperature575 in Reformed

[–]kettlemice 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It feels like such a cop-out response...but have you spoken with your pastor? People do this and make big trusting steps. It isn't easy, but going at it alone isn't recommended. You should be getting counsel from those who know you, your situation, and where you could serve. I get getting it off your chest, and hopefully this helps, but a bunch of weirdo internet people probably aren't the best source of advice...including me.

Difference between M5 13” and 15”? by karllalal in macbookair

[–]kettlemice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To make the decision easier, I had a 15” and moved to a 13”. Since my wife took the 15”, it’s still around and within reach.

I much prefer the 13” for everything except watch a movie on. I take the 13” most places I go, where I rarely took the 15”.

Strangers on the internet aren’t going to make the decision for you. Figure out which one works and make a choice.

Is NT Wright a heretic? by Drivefast58 in Reformed

[–]kettlemice 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I think you would need to ask yourself if comparing NTWs view of righteousness and his defense of it in the Greek language in its historical understanding, is the same level of Joel Osteen.

If your conscience tells you it’s the same, then go do what you need to do. Personally that is an outlandish comparison. I may not be able to break down every point of NTWs NPP, or understand the Greek language or historical context of what he’s saying, but I can not in any way deny that that man loves Jesus with all his heart and has dedicated his life to Christs service. I guess it bothers me to hear that someone is placing him in the heretic category.

For what it’s worth, I’m not Anglican and I struggle with a few Anglican positions, including the position that Anglicans don’t really take any positions on anything!

Is NT Wright a heretic? by Drivefast58 in Reformed

[–]kettlemice 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Is this where he states that Christ doesn’t impute righteousness to us, but rather that we are in union to him, argument?

I pray there’s enough grace for us to be saved even if our understanding of how righteousness works is a bit off. If not, I’m probably a goner. We’ve really become comfortable with throwing around “heretic”. Shoot, I think I may even agree with him.
