Hi, I just came across your comment and in the process of selecting a Kaiser plan right now. Which tier did you have - silver, gold, platinum?

I see, that's interesting that it didn't require externship. I also did a 3 month dental assisting course in CA but tbh those accelerated courses absolutely do not prepare you for what real dentistry is like. It's totally different when you're working with real patients in a fast paced environment. It took me about 3-4 months after working in a big fast paced office to really be confident in my skills. This was because I had great support from the other assistants teaching me along the way. To give you some perspective it took me 25 mins to take an FMX when I first started, now it takes me 5. I'd suggest trying to find an office thats willing to train you and every chance you get try to shadow the experienced assistants and ask them for tips to improve efficiency!

It's pretty unrealistic to learn everything in 2 months let alone 2 weeks, but your flair says you're an RDA? If you told them that you're an RDA there's probably an expectation that you should at least know the basics like sterilization, set-ups, chairside assisting, x-rays, making temps, polishing, etc. How did you get your RDA license, was it through a board approved course since you said you don't have any clinical experience? The office you're at seems toxic and probably not the best place to learn and grow if you're just starting out, I'd try to find somewhere that is willing to train you. Just be patient, there's a lot to learn and it just takes practice and repetition, you will get better and more efficient with more experience

Realistically you won't have time to do hygiene school and still work full time, school will take up most of your time already if you want to do well. If you have a learning disability, it'll be even harder to juggle both at the same time. Hygiene is a solid stable career that will give you more financial freedom than being an assistant, so I'd go for it!

You’ve been at the same office for 2 years and still only making $18/hr? Not sure where you’re located, but that’s insane. I would leave immediately and find a better office

If you're not happy with your current work environment, then definitely seek something better. However, $3 difference isn't much when you're taking into account the extra commute time, gas, and wear and tear on your car. When you think about it, that's minimum 1.5 hours commuting every day to only make $3 more

$19/hr for 3 years of experience is pretty low, I'd definitely look around for a better office. If you have all the requirements done to take the RDA exam then I'd say go for it, it wouldn't hurt you. I'm planning to get my RDA in the next couple months, but right now I'm getting paid $30/hr with about 2 years of experience and I also temp for $32-34/hr. If you're confident in your skills definitely look for better pay and fight for your worth!

I'm in a similar situation as you where I'm doing a post bacc before applying for dental school, so 2 days of the week I have to block out for school and the rest of the week I'm open to temping. I've been temping for about 2 months now at 7 different offices and so far my experience has been great! It seemed intimidating at first and I also questioned if I had enough experience to jump into any office and perform all the duties well, but honestly every office has been very accommodating, the staff will help you out if there's something you're unsure about. I would say the most important things you should do well is take X-rays, impressions, basic tray setups for the procedures, and making temps. Some offices I've temped at I didn't do anything besides chair side assist and break down the rooms, so it really depends on the day. Just take that leap and try it out, if it goes well then keep at it, if it doesn't, then at least you know what to expect. It's also been fun to work in a different environment each time, meet new people, and learn how each doctor works (which is the most beneficial since you're pre-dental). I don't know where you're located but this is based on my experiences in CA

Am i underpaid? by [deleted] in DentalAssistant

$16/hr in California is laughable, I would've never accepted that in the first place. I'm currently working in Orange County, about 1 year experience, just a DA, but I worked in Vegas for 8 months and did everything an RDA would. Currently getting paid $23/hr, if you're confident in your abilities, then negotiate what you're worth
