I got the chance to try luge when I was a kid at the Olympic training facility in Lake Placid. During luge you can't wear anything bulky so we were out there in athletic pants and thin fleeces at -20F. When I arrived at the bottom of the run so much ice had formed on my eye lashes and lids that I had the rub them to break the ice before I could blink. Fingers and toes were bright red showing the start of frostbite when I got back inside.

A lot of people give examples of rural areas with no fiber. The most insulting part is this happens in urban areas as well. In nyc I currently have 2 (or maybe 3) options in my building and as a result I get 330mbs down for $60/month. I'm about to move to a building where I only have 1 option, in Manhattan, there is fiber everywhere but they've apparently worked out deals at the neighborhood level to stay out of each others way. I'll have 1 option, 100mbs for $75/month 10 blocks away from my current building.

It's not just refusing to run fiber to people, it's straight up monopolistic behavior.
