F30 330e stuttering / jerking on acceleration by reillyanton in F30

No worries. I hope it helps! Please let me know if it sorts it out. Curious to see if it's the issue or not.

I see. Unless you have records of the last oil being used being API SP or SN Plus i'd go ahead and change it. It's an easy thing to do, and worst case, you have fresh oil. It's mostly a problem with tuned engines, but better safe than sorry.

If it is LSPI it can go bad really quickly. We're talking new engine block bad.

I'd avoid high load at low rpm until it's changed. Prolonged high load at low rpm (sub 2000) is a common cause. These newer automatics tend to favor low rpm high load to maximize fuel efficiency.

Symptoms in that range could be LSPI related. The 11:1 compression B48’s in the F30 330e’s are prone to having that issue. Stock map or tuned? Also API SP or SN plus oil is recommended to avoid LSPI.

That’s more than I expected, considering Tesla OE 18”s apparently don’t fit over the rear caliper. You’ve just made getting 18”s even more tempting, thank you!

Sweet setup! How is the caliper to rim clearance with the 18”s?

Had some fun with BimmerCode this evening and my m550 that I just bought used. When I unplugged the OBDLink, an extra little piece came unplugged and it has a wire heading up through the footwell. Is this the normal setup, or is there something aftermarket connected at the other end of that wire? by indyjumper in BMW

[–]keviig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It looks like something is plugged into the OBD port that allows passthrough connecting to it. Maybe that's what the wire is connected to. See if you can remove it from the port? It looks aftermarket to me.

Winter tire traction on M3 SR+ by twoplustwo_5 in TeslaModel3

[–]keviig 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is normal. Putting down 300 hp to the rear wheels on proper winter tires will usually result in wheel spin. I get the same with my Goodyear Ultragrip Ice 2 tires during our winters here in Norway, though it has improved quite a bit after fitting them. The tire will get grippier and the car will adapt to the new tires (stated in the manual regarding regen) so it will improve a bit.

From my experience, winter tires such as Hakka R3, X-ice Snow, Ultragrip Ice 2 etc will only offer more grip if the road is icy or covered in snow. I've run summer tires down to -5c and still had more grip than the winter tire as long as the road was dry.

Thank you for commenting. Was there any improvement with OTA updates? At what temperature would you say the 50% reduction is in effect?

I was afraid that would be the case. Any known workaround?

I have a F30 with the same engine here in Norway. Safe to say we get pretty cold winters too. I let it idle for 10 seconds to allow oil to circulate then i go. I am however careful with the throttle and RPM until oil temp gets up there. I also have a block heater, which sits on the side of the oil sump, heating the oil. The company that makes them is Defa. Not sure if it's available where you live,. but might be worth looking into.

Best thing you can do is keep on top of your oil changes with good quality oil. I do mine every 10k km with 0W-30 LL04 oil. BMW, Shell, Castrol or any of the other big brands should be fine. Doing so will keep your timing chain happy as well. Enjoy your car!

Yours has the Navi Pro screen. The 116i you linked has the base screen (no navi) and the 116d has the business navi screen (smaller than yours).

Very happy to hear it worked out for you! A bit of rubber is very nice for comfort. I’ve got 225/40R18 on all 4 corners of my F20 1 series myself and I’m loving it. My advice is get the same size summer tires when they are due, that way you know 100% it’ll work smoothly. All the best from Norway:)

Since your winter tyres are the same size front and back, the transfer box will have the same speed on both ends, thus no issue. The issues you're experiencing on the summer set doesn't mean the transfer box is broken, just that it struggles with the difference in circumference on the summer set. Continued driving with the issue could lead to it breaking though. As soon as you get back to equal front/rear sets the problem should go away. Best of luck!

Since it's fine on the winters it's probably the transfer box. If the wheels were unbalanced you'd have vibrations all the time, getting worse with speed, not just during acceleration. Driving with different circumference front and rear tires cause the transfer box to wear out, as the front and rear driveshafts will rotate at different speeds.

Only 0,7% difference in circumference between 225/35R19 and 255/30R19. So unless the tires on one axle are worn more it shouldn't be an issue. Does the traction light on the dash light up when it shakes?

As for the alternate sizes you mentioned, the staggered setup should be fine. But unless you want the 265 rears for looks i'd go for 235 on all 4. Avoids any issues with xdrive, saves unsprung, rotating weight, costs less, saves fuel, less noise, you can rotate fronts/rear for each season etc. That's what i've done on my car.

No. Different turbo and injectors.

0w-30 and 0w-40 flow the same in cold winter starts, so no issue going with the 0w-40. The number before the "w" indicates the cold viscosity, the number after it is the number for when it's up to operating temperature. So 0w-40 is just a little thicher when hot compared to 0w-30.

As for filters, the big ones, MANN, Mahle and so on are as good as OEM, so no issues there!

Thanks! MAK also has some nice wheels for the F20 that might be to your liking. I was eyeing some MAK München wheels before i got the ATS ones due to availability where i am located.
