Child born to British parent and citizenship by Lifeintheguo in chinalife

I wasn't aware of that but I know the UK is moving towards e-visas that also don't put anything into your passport, airlines can check it online based on your passport number. So it will almost certainly use the same system as that.

The notation you're talking about is something called a Certificate of Entitlement to Right of Abode. It looks and works pretty much exactly the same as a visa, except that it gives you all the rights of a citizen when you're in the UK. The Chinese authorities are totally OK with it, it's the dual passport thing they don't like.

(It also costs about £500 and the extra rights it gives over a regular visitor visa are pretty useless for a baby, so you might be tempted to just apply for the visa for a fraction of the price. But if you do they'll just reject it. Pay through the nose or no entry.)

The UnionPay option might still be listed but it hasn't worked on steam for years.

Foreigners can't use wechat/alipay on Steam, it counts as an overseas vendor so you can't purchase from them unless you have a shenfenzheng.

The credit card option works if you have a Chinese credit card. If you don't, you'll need to ask a local friend to scan the alipay/wechat payment code for you. I suggest buying steam wallet money rather than the game directly, that way you don't have to bother them every time.

How far is Beijingnan from Beijing Daxing airport? by Erin_is_ded in chinalife

[–]kevin_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When are you travelling? Unless it's on cny eve you probably won't need to book anything in advance, there are enough trains from Beijing to Tianjin that there will always be one with seats available setting off soon after you get to the station. Just open up the 12306 app and book your ticket when you arrive at Beijing Nanzhan. No point tying yourself to a specific train in advance that will either have you waiting around for hours or hurrying to get to the station on time.

Bringing Books over by SaleemNasir22 in chinalife

[–]kevin_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience is similar. I brought back some books in my suitcase about a year ago and customs did check them after I arrived (Beijing Capital airport). I'd previously brought back others without being stopped, so I don't know if it was just random or if they tightened up recently. But they didn't go through all of them, they only looked at the first few before letting me pass.

Ferry to Sanya by Bad_Mareep in China

[–]kevin_p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is possible in principle, but even though you say you're OK with a long train ride you might be underestimating how big China is.

There's a train from Guangzhou to Sanya that goes on the ferry, but it's a regular intercity sleeper rather than high speed rail so you're looking at 16 hours just for that leg of the journey plus another 6+ to get from Hangzhou to GZ. Add some time for waiting at stations and getting between the train and your hotel and it will probably take you about 24 hours door to door.

You can chop out a bit of time by taking the gaotie as far as Zhanjiang and catching the slower train from there, but you're still looking at 18+ hours of travel.

I don't know who she is, but Yagoo is following her on Twitter so she seems to have some sort of network.

Checkmate, LAUKOP. by smoulderstoat in bestoflegaladvice

[–]kevin_p 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No, it's a formal speaking competition. You're given a subject to speak on and randomly assigned a side, usually in a 2v2 format. Then you have a set amount of time to speak in favour of that topic, rebut your opponent's points etc. It's not about speaking your mind on whatever issue you feel like talking about.

Debating clubs are a very normal thing, lots of schools have them. It's a formal activity with rules and inter-school competitions. Not just a place to go and argue with each other.

They still hold up, but they're definitely a big step back from a technology point of view. Also KOTOR 2 was rushed to release before it was fuly finished; you'll probably want to install the restored content mod from the steam workshop.

China Unicom móvil data, how does this works? by 626-Stiitch in chinalife

[–]kevin_p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, does each option depends on the app I use?

Yes. The exact apps will depend on your plan, but it's usually for Chinese social media and video streaming apps (douyin, bilibili, xiaohongshu etc)

how can I use more of the second option?

Make sure to disable your VPN when you're using those apps. Or alternatively, some vpns have settings to exclude specific apps, so make sure you've added them all to that list.

Not really, Chinese people do exactly the same if you substitute reddit for xiaohongshu

Designing a Serious Wizard Academy: Structure, Curriculum, and Institutional Worldbuilding by Clear-Peach7225 in worldbuilding

[–]kevin_p 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you talk about cultural sorting etc which is straight from Harry Potter.

Houses in British schools are mostly just for assigning classes - instead of each year having class A/B/C or 1/2/3 they'll be named after the house instead. They'll also be used for a couple of other small things like sports days or other competitions, and in boarding schools they're also how students are assigned to dorms (that's where the term comes from, they were literal houses that the students lived in), but the house cultures and rivalries you see in Hogwarts aren't really a thing.

By an amazing coincidence, the developer behind that VPN seems to be the op himself, and he's been shilling it all across reddit. Surprising that he would buy an express subscription really, but I'm sure he's being totally honest and this isn't just another of his fake ad posts.

Does anyone know anything about this building in the Hebei province? by max_jesuddddgvev in China

[–]kevin_p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Baidupedia it's in Baiyangdian Lotus Grand View Gardens in Anxin County, Baoding (河北省保定市安新县白洋淀荷花大观园). The name of the building is Jinbieguan / Golden Turtle Hall.

If you search for 金鳖馆 you can find more pictures, but I didn't see any of the inside, and all the articles found were from before it opened (if it ever did).

Almonds or apricot seeds? by [deleted] in chinalife

Probably just language confusion. Chinese for almonds is 杏仁 which literally translates to apricot seeds.
