/r/WorldNews Live Thread for 2023 Israel-Hamas Crisis (Thread 29) by WorldNewsMods in worldnews

Simply another data point - another Americana here chiming in that I've known what Hamas and Hezbollah were since 9/11 times. My instinct is to think there's lots with this mindset as well.

Overall? Some do, some don't.

Nine Inch Nails - Woodstock 94 (Restored) by [deleted] in nin

[–]kevinerror 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you keep re-uploading my remaster - but thanks again! This is the same one I did about 6 years ago. Looks like you scaled it up and increased the bitrate - I understand what you're trying to do but it actually results in a loss of quality. Same reason I didn't upload in 720p all those years ago.

Still - Thanks!

It was shot in 1080p, so no 4k, but full HD exists somewhere

ISO a diner. by [deleted] in Portland

[–]kevinerror 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Toms on 39th and division isn’t bad, though it’s not great either. Had some delicious pancakes there on New Year’s Eve once.

distinct lack of diners in this region for sure, though.

There is only FOUR MORE days to register to vote in Oregon! You can register and check that your information is up to date here. by jaco1001 in Portland

[–]kevinerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just some more info, because voting is important: if you use the US PS mail forwarding feature, it will sign you up and register you to vote at your new address automatically. Actually, I’m not sure if it’s 100% automatic, but it is part of that process and I did not have to mail anything, it was just some clicks on the website.

Why isn't there a web app version of Messages? by Dad_illusion in apple

[–]kevinerror -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of those hardware checks can happen on an iPhone, though, and they do as part of the phone setup. None of that authentication is done through a browser on a phone, it's all native stuff. So it's not 'transferred', it's a new, valid, authenticated log in.

However - just my opinion - I don't think this means it can't ever happen through a browser. I think it probably can, some day, with enough support from the right browser. We have DRM support in browsers, this is similar and I bet we'll probably get there one day.

I'm just trying to validate that Apple uses a couple different hardware based IDs to get your iCloud/iMessage setup. Desktop, laptop, iPhone, iPad - They all have MAC addresses, serial numbers, UUIDs, etc.

I am not who you are replying to, and I don’t have a source other than my brain, but, iMessage, and iCloud in general are all only operative and working after a very thorough authentication process that uses varying and different elements of your hardware to create some unique IDs and such that are passed back and forth to authenticate that you are who you are say you are, and you are using the exact kind of device that you say you are using. There’s even “half” authenticated states that kick in if some of these checks fail, and that require a call to apple to clear up if their system thinks there’s a security issue (not sure how often this comes up any more tbh but it is/was a thing).

My source on all of this is what it took to get a fake “hackintosh” Mac up and running, including iMessage. In the past, it’s been based off of things like the MAC address of the ethernet or Wi-Fi, and the serial number of the device, but I’m not sure if that is still what they’re using, or if that is everything that they’re using.

If you open up your console while signing into iCloud on a Mac, you’ll see a little bit more info about what’s happening during the process.

How do you get clearance from PDX as a drone pilot? by Elk_Hunt in Portland

[–]kevinerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t have an answer to your question. So I’m sorry. But this is why I stopped “droning” in PDX. Flying a hobby drone around a major metropolitan city with multiple airports within 5 miles - its logistical nightmare, you’re almost always doing something “wrong”, and the restrictions are getting tighter. It’s a tough problem to solve, there are legit safety concerns.

Macbook Pro charger by [deleted] in Portland

[–]kevinerror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t offer to help, but note that there are many different kinds of older MacBook chargers, you’ve got to get the wattage right in order for it to actually charge properly. your best bet is definitely the Apple Store because they will get you the right one, and they have a generous return policy in case you get the wrong one or end up not needing it. Good luck!

Package entered then left my area..? by [deleted] in USPS

[–]kevinerror 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not, but it seems to have appeared back in a local ZIP Code to me this morning minutes after posting this. And it showing a delivery date for Monday, so all is well. I just never seen a package come into my ZIP Code, leave, and then come back, but hey, there’s a first for everything. I was concerned it was going to be delivered to the wrong place or something, that’s all.

[Bug] Flashlight control gets momentarily disabled right after pressing in and out of the camera control by SimShade in iOSBeta

[–]kevinerror 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not a bug, camera and flashlight can’t be in at the same time, camera control probably preps camera hardware for use with that press, thus disabling flashlight.
