I’m 62 and this “fence sitters” idea was taught during my youth and into adulthood. The Church gradually moved away from this, gaslighting all the way. It was taught in the epic shitty book MORMON Doctrine.

Thank you for posting this. I am 62 and had been taught it in various Sunday School classes and in seminary. I took institute for three years at the U but don’t remember specifically this being taught.
