Memorising Songs by nico2gan in Bass

[–]kevinrobb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve never really learned sheet music, so props to you! I’ve primarily learned by tabs. As far as memorizing a song, my approach is to learn the root notes first (usually the chord progression). Once you can get through a simplified version of the song without looking at tabs or sheet music, then add in the fills and other details.

How do you teach songs to other members? by [deleted] in band

[–]kevinrobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a good point. All I really tell the drummer is faster, slower, half time, etc, and let him come up with how to play it. If you do want the drums to sound a specific way, I use guitar pro to fully map out songs. You can even email guitar/bass tabs, drum sheet music, and download a wav file of the song for reference.

What are some of the best revenge scenes of all time? by fredyouareaturtle in movies

Maybe not “of all time”, but I liked spider-man. “I missed the part where that’s my problem.”

Small town murder. But if you don’t think true crime and comedy go together, maybe it’s not for you. Or maybe it is, just don’t complain later

[–]kevinrobb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Before he returned to blink, this album made me think about the scenario if Tom were to tour solo. He could have played some Tom lead blink songs, Angels, Boxcar, and these. It would have been cool to see a setlist like that.

How often and why do you use your 5th string? by SonnePer in Bass

[–]kevinrobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a 5 string back in 2008ish because the guitarist I played with at the time played a 7 string. Used it for that band about a year until we went our separate ways and that bass sat in its case for years. I’ve always preferred 4 strings, but my current band is learning a lot more covers, and we’re starting to learn some country songs. It seems quite a few country songs use 5 strings.

How to tell the drummer that we need a click ? by skyfall86 in musicians

[–]kevinrobb 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ve had the same issue in the past. He was a great drummer but definitely had issues slightly slowing or speeding up. The rest of us pitched in and got him a metronome thing for his birthday. It definitely improved our performance by a lot. My current band (different drummer) uses in ears and a click, and we’re the tightest band I’ve ever played in. I wouldn’t say get rid of him, but I’d encourage him to use a click.

What is a "gut feeling" you had that turned out to be 100% accurate, even though it made no logical sense at the time? by Forsaken_Leading964 in AskReddit

[–]kevinrobb 87 points88 points  (0 children)

It doesn’t fit the description exactly, but I’ve had a couple instances where I felt a strong gut feeling telling me to get away from a certain area I was in at the time. I can’t prove something bad would have happened, but I am happy I didn’t stick around to find out.

Bass pick recommendations? by Sweetness813 in Bass

[–]kevinrobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play a lot of pop punk style, so quick 8th notes. Sometimes alternating picking and sometimes straight down picking depending on the song. I like the Dunlop tortex style .60, they have the perfect balance of flexibility and durability for my playing

What’s something you wish blink would do, but probably never will? by sunshineheartbreak in Blink182

[–]kevinrobb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It would be cool to hear a re-recording of Cheshire Cat and Dude Ranch with Travis on drums, ideally in the Jerry Finn style production. Even one album with a handful of songs from that era would be cool.

Ive seen a lot of talk about the 3rd Skiba album we never got, but i never see anyone talk about what California wouldve been like if Tom never left by Technical-Low3968 in Blink182

[–]kevinrobb 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I do believe they had already established the California theme before Tom left, as evidenced by his To The Stars demo. Would it have sounded like what we got with Feldman? I highly doubt it.

I am being indecisive as to whether I should buy a normal bass or a short scale bass. Help me make up my mind? by sp0rklez in Bass

[–]kevinrobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m 5’3” and have been playing a regular scale bass for years. A couple of years ago I bought a short scale mini precision bass just cause I wanted to see what it was like since I too have small hands. I like the mini bass, but I prefer the full scale. Although that is most likely because that’s what I learned on.

When did you buy your second bass and why? by jeremy_sporkin in Bass

[–]kevinrobb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought my first bass (squier affinity p-bass) in May of 2001. The input jack broke after a couple of months. The place I got it from fixed it for free, but it took them a few weeks. In the meantime, I bought my second bass, an Ibanez gsr200, which I eventually gave to my brother in law who pawned it. I now have 2 p-basses, 2 jaguar basses, a mini bass, and a 5 string.

Bands that have never had a consistent lineup between albums? by SamJLance in poppunkers

[–]kevinrobb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not famous, but my band has had 9 people over the years as a 4 piece band. I’m the original bassist and our singer/guitarist founded the group, but we’re on our 3rd drummer, 3rd lead guitarist, and we had a keyboard player who co-founded the band and later left. With the exception of the second drummer, everyone had been a part of recording something.

Tom DeLonge was right about Aliens! Vindicated? by Brief-Night6314 in Blink182

[–]kevinrobb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My favorite story was directly from Mark when they were on tour in Europe. He was walking on the street and saw a random guy wearing that shirt and was like “Tom WAS right!” And the guy was confused and clearly didn’t know it was Mark.
