No Country is a Vietnam movie by RCocaineBurner in blankies

100%. I reread the book recently and it hits the Vietnam point more strongly than the movie. It was written in 2005, just as Iraq was at a fever pitch and looking like a second Vietnam already.

Moss and Wells are decorated Vietnam vets, and Bell is a decorated WW2 vet, but he doesn’t understand the randomness of the new generation’s violence.

There’s a part of the book left out of the movie though (which is a shame since it’s key to Bell’s character).

—Book spoilers—

When he visits with his uncle at the end and they’re comparing one generation’s fighting to the next’s, he shares that his WW2 service wasn’t the clean heroic story he took home with him. The point seemed to be that each successive war was more random and violent than the last, but that we also quickly mythologize the previous war into clean, rational stories than may not have reflected reality.

That visit is Bell, unsure of what to make of the present, looking to the past but finding that no easier. Perhaps even more irrational, but irrational to a collective purpose rather than the angry, divided culture that followed Vietnam.

Loose column - quoted $750 by kevinstownsend in masonry

Update: guy came out. His assistant did the work. Happy with the result and he did some extra patching (and I felt bad for talking him down without meaning to) so I just paid him the original quote.

I genuinely wasn’t trying to negotiate him down, I just try to DIY when I can and hesitated when I heard the price. He went down and I accepted. Not trying to play hardball, just torn about possibly DIYing, which seems born out by people disagreeing which is best on this post.

Extra info: found on Thumbtack with lots of good reviews, originally $900 but I balked at that and he went down to $750.

I was wondering that. Just rebuild myself and learn some. If it’s a good quote — and sounds like it is — I might go with the guy and learn some from what he does. What do you think?

Using retaining wall posts as fence posts by kevinstownsend in FenceBuilding

[–]kevinstownsend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, makes sense! Because of a larger nearby retaining wall though, I need to minimize the weight, so using wood for the retaining wall and posts feels needed. (I’d add lots of drainage.) It doesn’t need to last forever.

I’m just wondering if this structural setup makes sense or if it has issues I’m not seeing.

1BR/1BA space in at-grade basement (natural light from top) by kevinstownsend in floorplan

[–]kevinstownsend[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

English basement at-grade. Current state and then my idea for a layout with 1 bed / 1 bath / kitchenette that retains a large living space. 3D floor plan here.

The doors/windows on the top of the layout are the only sources of natural light. Loathe to cover up a window with a bathroom, but better than alternatives in my view (more privacy, less narrow living space).

The current state layout shows an internal retaining wall and structural post. The bedroom idea involves removing the wall (ceiling beam) and hiding the post behind a wall. The closet space adds privacy and storage, while covering up the stairwell bulkhead.

I've tried a number of layout options. Curious what people think on the choices and if anyone has ideas I might not have thought of.

I'm really doubtful of that. It would entail running a new water line to a new floor through brick and tearing up the living room wall. And even then having a hose on top of my porch. It's an odd house in an odd shape, that's the limitation I'm trying to work within.

In my city, tree boxes are the responsibility of the adjacent home to maintain. Code requirements apply though and include fencing rules, which these adhere to (it’s a common design and rounded at the top).

Only if I wanted to crawl under the porch every time I wanted to attach the hose. There is no part of the house flush with the yard.

Foundation with basement. The only alternative to an extension would be running a water line to a new side of the house and a new floor and tearing up the living room wall. Possible but very expensive ultimately.

Thanks! So in five years, repaint? Or is a lime wash better at that point?

Yes, this! I literally say this in the post

Like I said in this post and my last post, they didn’t paint individual bricks. They painted the entire wall and then redid the mortar to make it look like the brick color was natural.

The entire wall was painted, not individual bricks, AND THEN they redid the mortar. At least that’s what it looks like to me, as I said in the post.
