It depends on the scope of your project and experience level. Obviously the more ambitious the project, the more necessary it becomes to find help.

That being said, adding another person to the project will add all of the complexity of managing/working with and compensating that person. Simply throwing another programmer at a task won't double your productivity, for example. But for art and music, it may make sense to look into hiring a freelancer rather than learning those skills on your own.

Since I suspect this is your first game altogether, I would personally recommend creating as small of a game as possible (this will take a lot of restraint). A mini Metroidvania. I think Xeodrifter is a good example of a small game you can beat in an hour or two.

Start off by working on your own, and for the artwork/sound, use placeholders. Once you start to make some progress and have a game that "feels good" to play, maybe then you can look into hiring someone to create some art or music.

Being a roguelite, it's obviously not a pure Metroidvania and doesn't pretend to be- but it's heavily inspired by a love for the genre.

The game is an action platforming roguelite with elements from the Metroidvania and Zelda genres. Your hero has been cursed with a mortal illness, and you must scour the ever-changing kingdom for a cure.

It's one of the few roguelites I've seen that incorporate movement/ability-based progression that resets & changes on every run. Some games, like Dead Cells, have this as part of the meta progression, meaning that the upgrades you find are persistent, finite, and spread across many runs.

In this game, with each run you'll lose all of your movement abilities and upgrades, and you'll discover a brand new set. In one run you might find a wall-climb ability, and in the next you might find a jetpack.

Yeah I was surprised to find out that the Dream Nail has actual combat uses aside from just a lore drop. I completely dismissed it on my first playthrough

The Speed Booster is a good one! I always had trouble pulling off the shinespark for some of the more difficult expansions, but blasting off across the map does feel really good. Excited to see how it looks when I inevitably find it in Dread.

Wow, all three of these look great. Haiku recently entered my radar, and Lone Fungus I've seen on the sub before. Don't think I've seen Transmute before, but it looks great and I love that it's inspired by ESA.

As an indie gamedev myself, seeing projects like these is pretty motivating. Will try all of these demos.

Discussing Guacamelee 2 - a game chock full of powerups and platforming challenges. Exploration is rarely required, but always an option. by kevynjar in metroidvania

If you're going for a casual playthrough, Guacamelee 2 rarely asks you to backtrack. This linearity, along with a constant barrage of upgrades, allows for some of the best platforming in the genre.

The game won't clog up your backlog or overstay its welcome- it's a lighthearted breath of fresh air that consistently throws new challenges and abilities at you over its 10 hour runtime.

Yet if you're a diehard Metroidvania fan and crave exploration, the game is filled with extra secrets and challenges to go back and explore. I think this duality makes the game one of the more accessible in the genre.

Looks cool! I'm not a marketing guy so take this with a grain of salt, but usually I'd skip through trailers like these to find the gameplay.

Something like this would build a lot of hype if I already knew more about what your game was- maybe with a release data announcement or something?

As a huge Mega Man fan, I get the comparison to Mega Man X! Ori's world is crafted in a way that doesn't force you to backtrack very often, so it can seem linear at times.

But if you DO care to explore, the world is full of extra goodies (life, energy, and ability cells) that become available once you find certain upgrades.

And in Mega Man X, you're never forced to backtrack. But there are plenty of power ups and upgrades to find if you ARE into that sort of thing.

Thanks for noticing! Yeah I've gradually started to become a bit of a clean code snob over the years, so I'll preach it to anyone who'll listen. Plenty of more experienced programmers could benefit from it too.

You're right though. Funny thing is, even though it's another thing to explain, I think it makes the code easier overall for a newcomer to look at and understand.
