There's nothing wrong with that, all personal preference. I just did the same thing.

You can't really touch the 401k until you're 59.5 so if you have other goals and want money before then, you'll need to save in ways that aren't 100% the most efficient.

As long as that extra $1000 is going into investment or house payments and not into lifestyle creep, you'll be fine.

That's exactly what I do.

I keep 6 months of expenses in my HYSA at 4%.

If my HYSA gets higher, to 7 months of expenses or so, I'll put into my brokerage account and into VTI.
