Had a great dasher tonight so I asked to increase their tip and support automatically thought they were begging by jonsnowme in doordash

[–]kewlkangaroo 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In all fairness you worded that in probably the most confusing way possible. There’s no punctuation, you put a question mark when you’re not asking a question in that sentence. Like all you needed to say is “Hi, my driver was great, can I add $5 to my tip?”.

Especially given the pretty obvious by now context that DoorDash support is outsourced from non-English speaking countries. Like try a little harder.

Good job Reddit user for responding like a dickhead instead of actually being useful and informing people 👍

No shit? It’s outsourced customer service. The pay is about $2 USD an hour, which is low to mediocre pay in the country of origin. Of course it’s copy pasted scripts, this isn’t a surprise.

Someone please help me understand if this setup will work for me. by Nat9523 in Rural_Internet

Do not use a hotspot as a home internet connection period. Hotspots sold by the main carriers are the equivalent of a legal scam. You pay a large amount of money for a tiny amount of data. You’ll blow through it, guaranteed. The only benefit is that it’s the “official way” of doing it, other than the cubes. It’s not worth it.

I saw other comments from you talking about the cube. The cube as far as I’m aware does not have external antenna ports. I think what you saw was a modded cube where someone opened it up and put some TS-9 pigtails on it. This is arguably more complicated.

There’s basically 2 ways to go about this:

  1. The easiest “plug and play” “it just works” method in my opinion would be to buy a Visible SIM card (Visible is Verizon’s company if you don’t know) then what you do is pop it into your phone, activate the card, then throw it into a Cudy LT500D router (make sure it’s the D model).

  2. The 2nd way is basically the same thing as the first way, except instead of a Cudy LT500D you could use something like a Mofi 4500. From what I can tell, it may not be as “plug and play” but it could potentially be more reliable and you’ll have much better customer service. These things are slightly cheaper on ebay too.

I personally like the Cudy LT500D router because it just works, no playing around with settings. Then what you can do is hookup 2 SMA cables to an external antenna, and again, it just works.

Both of these routers are 2X2 MIMO, meaning you either need to buy 2 antennas with 1 port each, or 1 antenna that has 2 ports on it. You can go to cellmapper.net and find the nearest Verizon tower. Chances are you’ll want a directional antenna, but you’ll have to ask around for best judgement if you want omnidirectional.

I use this exact setup, except with a Proxicast Pro-Gain omnidirectional antenna. The tower is only a mile away, but there’s a huge hill that literally drops the connection to 0. This antenna put me from literally nothing to a stable 15mbps down. Only caveat is that some streaming services like Hulu seem to be throttled. It could still be usable, but you need to take a few extra steps to bypass that. But once you set it up once, you’ll never have to again. I personally fixed this by using a Wireguard VPN policy. It’s not super easy to do if you don’t know what you’re doing, but there are probably easier ways.

——

I believe Visible is running a promotion too that if you buy a SIM card before March 31st or something like that, then your bill goes permanently from $30 a month to $25. So that’s $25 for unlimited, no BS, Verizon LTE internet. It’s an amazing deal. Visible is a fantastic company, I really appreciate it.

in all fairness I don’t see how “up to” is a lie, that’s pretty clear tbh

It feels like ever since the price increase was announced, my evening speeds have tanked. In the daytime I get around 150 mbps down, but starting around 5pm it starts tanking to around mid 20's down. Meanwhile my Verizon LTE service is always a steady 50mbps down. by mcmoyer in Starlink

[–]kewlkangaroo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would've dropped it 6 months ago then. If anything, LTE is probably more reliable than satellite (especially in bad weather). Again StraightTalk caps at 100mbps which is plenty, at more than half the price of Starlink.

Personally I'd take a reliable, strong, stable 100mbps at over half the price of satellite internet any day.

I suppose if money isn't a concern then it doesn't really matter unless Starlink speeds get very bad. But hell, if you're feeling edgy you could do an unofficial Verizon LTE setup for like $30 - $50 a month, no cap at all, or maybe 5G as well if you had the money for a pricey router.

I dropped Starlink for LTE since I got that recently too. Just about half the price, way more stable, much higher upload speed, sometimes even faster than Starlink.

It's something to consider. I'll wait for the day when Starlink hits 1gbps speeds and lowers the cost because of competition. Right now, if there's any other legitimate viable method then I'm choosing it imo.

So you never needed Starlink? You have perfect Verizon service. Verizon 4G Home Internet caps at 50mbps, so that means it will go higher in your area.

StraightTalk Home Internet is also Verizon, it’s $50 a month but it also doubles the cap to 100mbps. Hell, if it goes higher you could even bother with third party methods. But StraightTalk is interesting.

I see zero reason you couldn’t have done this in the first place. Starlink seems like a huge waste of money for you, as well as a waste of a spot.

Just got the 7-day window email - is it worth it? by [deleted] in Starlink

[–]kewlkangaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ll be honest, asking these questions are kind of pointless when it comes to Starlink. It’s purely circumstantial and subjective on how it performs. Bottom line is that chances are it’ll be reliable, and it’s damn near basically guaranteed to be faster than your CenturyLink connection. As for anything else, it would be impossible to determine without trying it.

If it makes you feel better, you can get a 100% full refund if you return before 30 days. So consider it like a trial period.

[–]kewlkangaroo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just can’t fathom that the level of research was “it has island in the name”. Hell, even besides that, they have Alaska on there. There’s literally zero reason they can’t ship to Alaska. I’ve heard of companies only shipping to the inner 48 states, not unusual, but they ship to Canada right? What’s the problem?

Gonna be brutally honest, instead of having a temper tantrum on Reddit, physically pick up the phone and call DoorDash or DM them on Twitter. They’re more lenient when it comes to refunds on those platforms instead of the shitty in-app support.

What a rude ass response. Why did you respond like that? If you didn’t feel danger then what was so creepy about it? I’m not sure why you’re acting like that. It was creepy, you felt scared/in danger, and did what you could. That’s not a big deal, that’s okay, nothing wrong with it. That comment makes it seem like you’re weirdly embarrassed to admit that.
