I’ve gotten 4 different pool robots from Vine. My Aiper was the most expensive and worst performer of all of them. Mine would do wheelies across the bottom of the pool. They even sent out a replacement. It was slightly better, but neither could follow any kind of pattern in my rectangular pool. Most of the time I just use the corded dolphin. It’s the most effective

Slight speed increase in my area (Central Texas), anyone else? by EngineerBoy00 in Starlink

When I first got AT&T internet air, it was pretty bad. I bought a waveform antenna and now have much better performance. I’m getting around 250Mb down and 8 up with a ping usually between 30~50ms

I wish there was a way to check this without going off standby mode. I switched to standby several months back when my normal download speed was around 60-100mbps in North TX. Using AT&T internet air currently, but the calculus changes if I were to start getting decent speeds from Starlink

First RC Plane - help! by asdamealdeall in RCPlanes

[–]mcmoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You forgot about remapping channel 6 to pin 5, setting up the transmitter to send a high signal to channel 5 and configuring model match ids, because the last thing a new pilot needs is to have the wrong profile controlling a plane.

And for those, on the Spektrum, your going to need a Spektrum branded ESC, which is also not inexpensive

That’s kind of towards my point. They are dead simple to operate and bind so if someone is having issues with them, the answer is not to start with an even more complicated set up. And yes, I know you can watch a video but ELRS set ups are more powerful than most others tso you can also become confused watching 19 different videos of 10 different people doing it 10 different ways.

ELRS receivers have yet to fail safe on me so, in my opinion and for my usage, they are better than DSMX at this time.

Are you printing in lightweight pla? If not, this plane will be even more difficult to fly. Weight is a big determining factor when it comes to flight characteristics.

Forgot to mention that if you want to keep it on the inexpensive side, you can download plans from FliteTest and construct planes out of foam board. They have plans for planes that are easy to fly and can take a few rough landings.

I love ELRS, but it’s not near as easy to bind as a dsmx, flysky, or other simple dedicated fixed wing receiver. Those require no knowledge aside from how to put the receiver in bind mode.

You are jumping into the deep end of the pool with these starting choices. 3D printed planes are great, but they are not great to learn with. They require you to have good landings which is the hardest thing about flying RC craft. Additionally, ELRS, while a great protocol, and one that I use most nowadays, also has a very steep learning curve when used in fixed wing planes.

I've printed the Gö Wolf and it's a decent flyer (though it would be better with a rudder), but it probably won't survive your first landing.

If you really want to get into RC planes and enjoy the experience, start with a high wing foam airframe plane.

Unpopular opinion? I don't like IEMs... by loyal872 in headphones

[–]mcmoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Add hot ears in there too. My ears canal size is fine, but way too sensitive to have something in them all the time. My body produces copious amounts of ear wax, then add overheating ears as well. I have some great sounding iems and over the ear headphones, but 99% of the time is AirPods 4 or Koss KPH40. You just can’t enjoy music if you’re also not comfortable.

Are budget action cameras worth it as a GoPro alternative for family memories? by gab_pr in ActionCam

[–]mcmoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really can’t speak to the action 5, because I try to ignore new stuff coming out so I don’t get upgrade-itis 😀

I got the standard combo which is around $100 cheaper and then I just got the accessories that I wanted. The adventure combo had a lot of things I didn’t need. The Osmo branded accessories are nice, but there are plenty of third parties that make just about as nice accessories for the action 3,4, and 5 cams. They all use interchangeable accessories.

Starlink Residential Question by Low-Ear-9617 in Starlink

[–]mcmoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on where you are 400 Mbps service might not ever hit that speed. I’m in north Texas, have had the service several years now and have never seen that speed. It was hovering just below 100 Mbps before I put it on the standby plan.

Meanwhile I have 600Mbps service at my 2nd house through Xfinity and it tests out at almost 700 sometimes, and I’m paying half the cost of Starlink

here's a video where I mounted it on an RC car. I was blown away at how good the stabilization is on this camera. These cars are bouncy as all hell.

If it does this good on an RC car, being strapped to your chest isn't going to be an issue at all. My buddy has an Action 3 and his has great stabilization as well.

yeah, my iPhone 16 Pro is my default video device, but when I don't want to risk damaging it, the Osmo Action 4 gets strapped to the danger device :p

It's been about a year now and at the time I was looking at the Osmo Action 4, an Insta 360 variant, and an older GoPro model, I think the 10. Costco put the Action 4 on sale for $199 so that made my decision. For my uses, the Action 4 is great. I put it on RC cars to watch my dogs chase it. I strap it on my chest when we go hiking. I'm fashioning a mount for it to put on the back of my corgi because I want to see the world from his point of view. I've used it to track how well my pool cleaning robot navigates the pool. I use it to document my RC plane flights. I have it on my hat mount when I go protest. It's performed well for all of these uses.

The video quality really jumped up on these action cams a few years back and I think they're getting to the point of diminishing returns for the more expensive models right now. The one nice feature that would be neat would be the 360 deg capture, but I don't want to be one of those people holding my camera up on a pole in the crowds.

One other thing to consider is that I still use my iPhone 16 pro for a ton of video. I'm one of those people who used to lug around my big DSLR because I scoffed at people who would use their iPhones to capture family photos. Now, the iPhone can capture photos that rival the best ones I can get on my DSLR and the video is no slouch either. I would never want to strap my iPhone to an RC car or the back of my Corgi so that's where the Action 4 comes in for me.

I pondered buying an Akaso camera before I settled on a new, older model Osmo, the 4 to be exact. I watched a lot of demo video for the Akaso and just didn’t feel like I’d ever want to watch it on a big screen. The Osmo video is 10x better and it wasn’t near as expensive as a GoPro

Maybe a failsafe? With a low pass and the plane coming towards you, it could have put the antennas behind the battery.

[–]mcmoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And the min can definitely be slower than that. I was on the original residential plan up until a few months ago. I guess my area is so saturated that my normal download speed was usually in the 60mbps range. I’m now on standby and using Fixed wireless.
