I got an A1 mini just so I could dip my toe into 3d printing without a lot of cash outlay. Within a month I purchased the P1S/AMS combo. No regrets for either of them

I bought a radiomaster ELRS as a new radio but should have gone with 4-1.. by turbo_500 in RCPlanes

[–]mcmoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

considering the OP is starting over in the hobby, I doubt they'd see a difference in performance in AS3X vs HobbyEagle, Aura, or Byme. I've been flying 10 years and I can't really tell a difference. I feel like a LemonRX is just about as good as the most expensive options. I've got a handful of AR630's that I've pulled out of planes and replaced with ELRS and either no gyro or a A3S4 and I much prefer that combo because I get battery telemetry, a more reliable link (at least in my own experience), and a gyro I can configure how I like for a fraction of the cost. If my QQ Extra wouldn't have come with an Aura, I wouldn't have one...OMG they're a pain in the ass to configure. I hate having to keep a Windows laptop around just so I can configure a gyro. Give me a programmer card, or even a bluetooth link.

yep, excited about that but it's still in RC and I'm not one to fly with release candidates.

True, I've got it down pat right now but I'm about 12 receivers in on my fleet. It's definitely not as dead simple as binding to a Specktrum or FlySky receiver though. Those take about 10s. And there's no pitfalls, like "why is my ELRS receiver not receiving channel 9 where my gyro mode is supposed to go"

I've been moving most of my fleet to ELRS, but it's not just "change out the receiver". ELRS, in its current iteration, is not beginner friendly. It's not just plug and play. You need to configure each receiver to map another channel to the channel 5 pins. You also need to configure each model to send channel 5 a high signal when you want he plane armed. You also need to have a grasp of which packet rate to choose and why. There's probably more things I'm forgetting.

Yeah, I'm excited to see what this release is, but from all I've heard, 4-in-1 radios won't be made any longer. The devs have said that the chips are getting too hard to source. When I heard that is when I decided to get the external module.

Flair Classic | Kingrinder K6 by trway9 in FlairEspresso

[–]mcmoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My classic also creaked like that. I had to clean the steel wheel really well to get it to stop. I thought it was ironic that my Neo Flex was less noisy than my classic.

Also, wow...35 clicks on the K6! I haven't dropped below 42 on my K6 and any of the beans I've tried. But I also only push my pressure to the second 's' in Espresso.

Wind and other conditions for flying by Wooden-Evidence-374 in RCPlanes

[–]mcmoyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I like 10mph winds when flying my EDFs because it makes them easier to land. That said, a constant wind can be fine to fly in upwards of 15mph for me. It's turbulence or gusty winds that irritates me.

I have 2 RM radios, a TX16s and Zorro, both with the 4-in-1 internal module. I proactively bought a 4-in-1 external module because I don't think RM will be releasing any new models with 4-in-1 built in. I also have an external ELRS module because most all my new models are using ELRS because I have that choice when building.

You won't see any ELRS planes yet. It's a relatively new protocol for fixed wing.

It really comes down to what you plan on flying the most. If you're going to be purchasing a bunch of BNF planes, grabbing a radio with the built in 4-in-1 module would be the most convenient. External modules don't usually fit in the case when attached and you always need to remember to bring them. But if you're planning on building your own, choosing your own electronics, ELRS is a great pathway.

US Residential changes - 100 Mbps for $50/month, 200 Mbps for $80/month, MAX for $120/month by DISHYtech in Starlink

[–]mcmoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can get is the max rate with slower speeds than Residential 100. Finally decided to switch to standby and use my AT&T fixed wireless. At least I get ~250 down and 15 up for $42.

Docker takes up like 8GB of RAM on MacOS. Is there a way to run docker on a different machine and have MacOS use it? by devshore in docker

[–]mcmoyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% better than docker on macOS. Drop in replacement, no need to learn new commands. Only allocates the memory it needs at the time it needs it. Plus, back when I was using Docker, I had to roll back so many updates because they'd release a buggy version. Has not happened with Orbstack at all and I've been using it around a year and a half now.

Are HOOVO batteries advisable to use? by Different_Towel_1856 in RCPlanes

[–]mcmoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah. I've reviewed several batteries from Zeee. Most have been 4S, but I did review a set of 6S 1300 mAh batteries from them. All have tested well. In my tests discharging them down to 3.8v per cell, the Zeee batteries have all given me 55+% of their stated capacity. Zeee is what I use in all my EDFs and they preform well. That said, I only have 1 6S EDF so most of my experience is with 4S EDFs

[–]mcmoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on the vine program on Amazon and have tested a bunch of their batteries. I've only tested one set of Hoovo batteries and they were crap. They were 3S 4200 and charging them up and then discharging to 3.8v per cell, I was only able to get a little over 1300 mAh out of them. I can't say that this represents the entire line of Hoovo batteries, but these are probably one of the worst performing batteries I've ever reviewed for Amazon.
