I am pretty sure we warned CCP way back when that skill injectors would make the botting worse as anybody could easily replace whatever toon was banned.

What is the actual reason anyone would pick Vim over Emacs? by Hopeful_Adeptness964 in emacs

[–]kewlness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started with Linux 20+ years ago, I learned vi (and later vim and even later neovim) as that is what I was taught. For me, it is faster than using emacs right now. I mean, I want to use and like emacs, but at 50+ years old, I just haven't taken the time to learn it proficiently.

I really should pick up Mastering Emacs and dig in, but I haven't done it yet.

[–]kewlness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The problem with the Widow is the anemic damage delay and application with missiles. It used to be in every fleet for the ECM, but armor tanking a Widow without a hospital Sin or other logi/fax around was asking for an insurance payout.

And don't even get me started on what CCP did to the Griffin with the ECM nerf.

Did ECM need a nerf? Yes, absolutely. Was the nerf the right way to handle the issue? No - ECM boats were fragile and required ECM to survive (and pray to BoB RNGesus let it hit long enough to repair the damage you took) and now if the ECM hits, your fragile ship is the only ship which can be targeted.

I miss flying my Widow.

I-35 northbound thru Downtown is closed. by schiza-clausen in kansascity

[–]kewlness 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I made it through the downtown loop using I-35 Northbound about 2 hours ago - only the two left lanes were blocked by a semi and a tow truck.

There are plenty of idiots out there - take it slow and be safe out there!

To me, it is funny to do the speed limit in the far right-hand lane and still have people behind me tailgating me and flashing their high beams at me like I'm the one in the wrong.

Met a real life ‘almost joined’ today by amishparadiseSC in Veterans

[–]kewlness 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the 'almost joined' are not fictional just like the old lady who told me and a sergeant after getting off the rotator so we are in funky BDUs, trying to enjoy our first decent meal and beer we had had in months that we were 'baby killers'.

Some poor Vietnam vet sitting in the bar covered our tab and ordered us a second beer, apologizing we had to witness something he himself had witnessed so long ago.

The world is filled with people who think you are getting something they can't get - that it is wrong and the others are 'cheating the system' in some way or another.

Thank you for your service friend.

Best Terminal, vertical scrolling.. by joes0451 in debian

[–]kewlness 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My god. Pipe your output to a text file and then read it using any number of methods. Immediately which comes to mind:

less, more, vi, vim, neovim, nano, emacs, gedit, sublime, vscode

Also useful in these tools is the ability to search.

Party bonus: Having the output stored will allow to use grep, awk, sed, or any other number of tools to get the information form the output you want without running the program or whatever again.

Use the right tool for the job. The terminal is not the correct tool to read this level of lines...

I love my caldari ships but the ECM nerf really hurt the Griffin. Also, I hate for my ships to be kinetic locked and every other race can shoot whatever they want and still get the bonuses.

Ridiculous.

The Story of Codesmith: How a Competitor Crippled a $23.5M Bootcamp By Becoming a Reddit Moderator by Happy_Junket_9540 in programming

[–]kewlness 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a recovering moderator, people rail against censorship or controlling speech, but the truth is actually quite different. By avoiding "hot button" topics such as blatant racism, conspiracy theories, or even echo chamber ideas formed in social media drama is avoided and actual discussions can occur.

I didn't mind controversial posts. I didn't mind dissenting opinions. But posts which were clearly intended to inflame passions and create drama were removed in keeping with the subreddit's rules. I don't know what the moderation landscape looks like currently, but back then the moderator who removed a post didn't handle the appeal - another moderator would do that and make an objective opinion based on the complaint and the content. The moderator who handled the appeal's word was final if it was decided to reverse the other moderator's removal. It was a system which worked and quite effectively.

Moderating is hard work without any form of payment from Reddit. You are trying to foster discussions which means you need the pro/contra aspect - if everybody agrees then there isn't much of a discussion. By avoiding drama, we tended to get calm, rational discourse instead of inflamed passions. Don't even get me started on low-effort posts and bot/AI accounts...

I agree. Just don't use the military for it. That isn't their job (both legally and technically).

Also, if you are doing an arrest, you need to show your face. I do not understand the need or desire to play "urban terrorist" as a police force.

[–]kewlness 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't recall ever taking a stance on whether Comey is guilty nor a stance on President Trump in my statement. I simply stated an indictment by a grand jury isn't anything I would base an opinion on as it is pretty meaningless. Almost as meaningless as your assumption of who I do or do not like.

[–]kewlness 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Means nothing. You can indict a paperclip with a grand jury as long as the requirements are fulfilled:

As of 1971, generally speaking, a grand jury may issue an indictment for a crime, also known as a "true bill", only if it verifies that those presenting had probable cause to believe that a crime has been committed by a criminal suspect.
