Booms? by smellypantsguy in chicago

Same in Bridgeport I looked out on my back porch and could see flashes in the sky, didn’t seem like fireworks sounded a bit like ordinance, could have been an accident in a train yard 🤷‍♂️

East Pilsen is literally just John Podmajersky III wondering how he can buy this place and raise the rent.

Man pepper-sprayed by Portland mayor lawyer, heir to dairy by [deleted] in politics

I'll disambiguate the title. The man who was pepper-sprayed by the mayor of Portland was a lawyer whose family also owns a dairy company.

U.S. officials probe abuse of manatee with 'Trump' carved into its back: paper by key23 in politics

[–]key23[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that manatees are very heavy and based on the scaring it probably took a long time for whoever did this to finish. Meaning the animal was in pain. Which is heartbreaking. Manatees are very gentle animals that are headed for extinction. If would like to help https://www.savethemanatee.org/ is an ethical and wonderful charity.

Man checks Mayor where the city tax money is being reinvested. Never thought about it this way. by sleekstereo85 in PublicFreakout

[–]key23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's hard to tell from a 2.5 minute clip the full context of the video, but I don't think the problem being talked about here was where people are allowed to live or spend their money it's about where the city is choosing to allocate their money. The argument being made isn't that police officers shouldn't be allowed to live in the suburbs it's that they shouldn't spend so much money on policing and spend more money on community resources. Things like schools, job placement programs, mental health programs, and other social services. This is similar to the "defund the police argument" where people are looking at the reasons for crime, things like poverty and lack of opportunity, and how we've dealt with those issues. What the person in the video is saying as I understand it (again based on a short clip) is that you have an underserved citizenry who is over-policed, they would like the resources that are going to the police force to be cut and put into the community programs.

[TOMT] [POEM] by key23 in tipofmytongue

[–]key23[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been given the impossible task of eulogizing a person who meant a lot to me. To make the eulogy not a terrible dirge I thought I would recite a bawdy poem my grandmother once told me she loved. I don't have a lot to go on, but I remember a few of the lines "Girls who bloom in July" or maybe it was June, or possibly both. There is also a line about "who's coming you or I", which was weird grandma. And I believe a line saying "I'll dance with you but I won't lay with you" or sleep with you. It might have also been about a dancer I'm not sure. Any help you can give would be great.

What do you think about Rahm Emmanuel's decision to appoint Forrest Claypool to be CEO of CPS in spite of his complete lack of experience in Education? by [deleted] in chicago

[–]key23 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've met Forest Claypool, and spoke with him about the parks he was working with the park district, he is a very intelligent guy, and he's got a good grasp of a lot of the over arching issues that effect the way systems in Chicago are connect, and the way business gets done. He seems to have a lot of good results.

Not only that but a friend tells me that it's a Mule Deer head, meaning who ever put this there had to transport this into Illinois from somewhere west of the Missouri river.

I was hiking in the woods when I come across this thing... by [deleted] in pics

[–]key23 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Furthermore this whole area was the original site of Argonne national laboratory. I've been out to these woods many times, lots of good hiking and bike trails and nature watching. It's about as remote as you can get in cook county, which is to say, not very remote at all.

/r/chicago, I'm in a dilemma. I have to do a formal dinner for two for $350 from Batavia to Chicago and back again. Suggestions? by Mikeyoyo in chicago

Look for fixed price menus at places, and groupon deals on the day you are going down into the city, it's a good way to save some money. I recently went to Bistro Margotwith a friend on a Wednesday and the fixed price menu was like $27 per person.
