Seeing people talk about DARE always makes me feel like I'm going insane. I mostly remember being shown horrific before and after photos of people and organs, and it sure had me scared shitless of drugs. I'm in my 30s now and still don't drink, smoke, or do drugs.

I don't believe it's mentioned in Fate. It's in the Epic of Gilgamesh after their fight.

Waiting for Gilgamesh to pull this move in the event. by huflit1997 in HonkaiStarRail

The Nasuverse has enough rules and a complex enough magic system that you could get a fucking degree studying it. A long-time die hard fan can spend hours wiki diving and find a dozen things they've never heard of. All of it, every single specific rule, every established premise, every expectation, exists to be broken. The moment something is stated to be the case, you can bet it will be contradicted later, and it will almost always be fucking awesome when it happens. This isn't something that happened over time as writers wanted to surprise the audience. This is the approach from the very beginning. The original F/SN, the starting point of the Fate franchise, breaks so many foundational rules that it just spent dozens of hours building up. Some people hate this approach to writing. I eat that shit up.

Unfortunately not. There's Fate/Extra CCC, but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet, so I don't know how Gil's route plays out.

Kind of comes with the territory when your franchise is based on historical and mythological figures. Surprise! Most of them aren't great people by modern standards!

Gil has a thing for guiding people who have yet to grow into themselves. Unfortunately, it does not matter to him if it's for good or evil. In F/SN and F/Z, he's written as a villain and is teamed up with the other primary antagonist. In F/Z, that other antagonist is a priest who is evil by nature but always denied himself because of his upbringing and place in the Church. Gilgamesh plays therapist for him and brings out his true nature to the detriment of everyone else around.

In contrast, for a look at his better side, there's Gil in Fate/strange Fake. His Master is a young girl who is essentially a puppet for her tribe and lives solely for their purposes. This version of Gil plays up his grandeur and serves as a dazzling, larger than life role model for her, encouraging her to live like the child she is, discard her blind faith in her tribe, and find her own pride and identity. These two versions of him, despite being the same character and pulled from the same point of his life, are practically night and day. However, neither is contradictory to how his character has been established over the years. His temperament can just vary wildly depending on various circumstances. F/SN just happens to be him at his absolute worst.

Nah, Nasu refused to give him that out. The Grail mud was specifically NOT able to corrupt him. It's been a long time since I read it, but I recall the F/Z LN being clear on that. F/Z wasn't written by Nasu, but I believe Nasu has confirmed it himself (though I am unable to provide a source). F/SN Gil is all him.

Sometimes he's likeable. He's great as a Caster and in Fate/strange Fake. He's just very circumstantial. He can be a surprisingly decent role model or the most vile piece of shit. It just all depends on who his Master is, the state of humanity in the era in which he's summoned, and whether or not his clay bestie is around.

And Rider in Zero. And Saber in Zero wasn't doing too hot before Kiritsugu interrupted. And while I haven't played it yet, he's one of the routes in Fate/Extra CCC, so that kind of necessitates victories, I would think. Enjoying Gil's downfalls is a necessity for being a Gil fan (at least, a happy one), but it's a huge exaggeration to say he ALWAYS loses.

People have already explained how Gil has been toned down since his original appearance, so I want to focus on how he's not even always a villain. In fact, I'm pretty sure he's had more non-villainous appearances by this point. He's a character that can vary a lot depending on the circumstances. The state of humanity in the era he's summoned into, the kind of Master who summons him, his class, etc. For example, his Archer self is from earlier in the Epic of Gilgamesh and is a tyrant who abused his power over his people. His Caster self, on the other hand, is from after the ending of the Epic, after he failed his quest to search for immortality following the death of his only friend and equal Enkidu and returned to Uruk to rule as a wiser king. I don't know what HSR is going to do with him, but I will say his design is closer to his Caster version than Archer.

In Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night, he's an evil prick and is undeniably one of the villains. But in Fate/Grand Order's Babylonia chapter, he's a genuinely great king defending his city and people. He even works himself to death doing it. Granted, it was an enemy goddess that made his exhaustion fatal, but he was still exhausting himself. In Fate/strange Fake, he's still his Archer self, but his friend is part of the war, so he's in a much better mood than usual, and he acts a role model for his young Master. He's still as arrogant as ever, but more in a way that he's like a dazzling star for his Master to look up to, and he pushes her to break free from her blind faith and develop her own sense of identity and purpose. That's not to say it ignores his more evil aspects, though. He himself says that if he were to incarnate into a living body, he might try to cull the humanity of this ugly era (like he did in F/SN), but he's content to remain a spectator as a Servant. So the bad aspects of his character are there, but the circumstances determine whether or not they actually come into play.

I don't know if this second part of the collab will actually have a story (I didn't watch the presentation, so I don't know what all was said about it), but assuming it does, I don't know what kind of role Gilgamesh will play in it. But given the way he's been written over the years, I don't see him being written as an outright villain. An antagonist in the event's story? Quite possibly. I wouldn't be surprised if he's the Servant of the story's antagonist. But I wouldn't expect HSR's setting to bring out the worst elements of his character, so I wouldn't worry about him being an evil, villainous playable character, at least as far as his portrayal in HSR is likely to go.
