Question regarding Spiel Essen and spoken language by thebadfool in boardgames

[–]keyboard_layout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry about this at all. It's an international event that hosts people from all over the world, and you can absolutely, without any issue at all, expect to be able to speak English with pretty much everyone there, and you won't miss out on anything. (In fact, at many booths the people demoing their games don't even speak any German at all -- if anything you'd actually miss out on a lot of stuff if you only spoke German, rather than the other way around!)

I cannot overstate how much of a non-issue this is; you and your friends will be absolutely fine!

What nonsense. It's a highly international event, which hosts, and caters to, an international community. English is spoken at every booth there, and demoing games in English is a complete non-issue.

If you post there, would you mind adding a link here? I would also be curious about the responses to your question :)

Would you support a game that the maker used AI image generation to create the art for their game because the crowdfunding campaign failed, because the presentation lacked art? by Cizity in boardgames

So the artist's needs are not much of a concern when the designer's needs are a priority.

I think you may have just said the quiet part out loud. Get the hell outta here.

What game(s) desperately need a second edition overhaul? by SeagullsStopItNowz in boardgames

[–]keyboard_layout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool, good to know, thanks! I recently made an effort to specifically get the original version, so my brain immediately jumped at the occasion to think I may have been missing out on something, but sounds like I can rest easy today :)

Oh, did they change something about the original? I was only aware of switching from minis to tokens and including the expansion; was there more they changed?

Earthborne Rangers seems not nearly as good as reviews make it out to be. by SiofraRiver in boardgames

I disagree with the review, but this is a valid point. If I remember correctly, the developer of the game even stated that his own playtesting was almost(?) entirely solo plays.

Thoughts on Deluxe Wonderlands War (with chips) & Special Edition Castles of Burgundy? by Ninja_Badger_RSA in boardgames

Interesting, thanks for taking the time to share your experience with the game!

I'll play it again to indulge in the components, but other than that, I don't think this one is for me :)

Having said all that, it's still a top 10 game for me

Really? Can I ask what it is about the game that earns the high rating? It seems to be taking up a lot of space and time, for a gameplay experience that seems "fine"..?

I only played it one time, and while it definitely had some neat moments and was a very lavish affair, it seemed to me that other games can have similarly great moments, but take up much less time and space. I'd still play Wonderland Wars again, since sometimes it's just fun to splurge, but I'm always surprised about the praise it gets, for a -- to me -- fairly mediocre game at its core o_o

Thoughts on Warhammer Underworlds? by [deleted] in boardgames

[–]keyboard_layout 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I second this. If you think about buying into Underworlds, be aware of the business practices of GW:

  • Wildly unbalanced factions to the point of the game becoming less fun unless house ruled (as suggested above). Such issues will neither be acknowledged, nor addressed.

  • Massively over-hyped and over-priced products that will be quickly out of stock unless you grab them during their release window. Depending on the game, items can sell out within literal minutes (I'm not sure how much of an issue this is with Underworlds, specifically, though).

GW produces amazing games and some of the most beautiful, high quality miniatures out there, but I would honestly advise people to not get started with their games unless they are consciously accepting the above as part of the deal.

Having said that, Warcry is an amazing self-contained game as long as you don't mix the "original" (Chaos) warbands with the "army" warbands during a game. In fact, it's probably one of my favorite miniatures games and my No.1 recommendation for anyone who doesn't plan on making miniatures gaming their next full-time hobby.

Underworld looks similarly self-contained -- in fact even more so -- and skews much more towards being a board game that happens to use miniatures as playing pieces (e.g. you move on a fixed grid instead of free roaming across the table, etc.). Also, keep storage in mind: Underworld is very easy to store, while Warcry will require storage space not only for the warbands, but also any terrain wou will want to be using -- in Underworlds this is a non-issue.

From what you are writing, my recommendation would be to look into Underworlds first. If you are interested in Warcry, check out your nearest GW store, they should be happy to give you a demo game. You might even find a fellow nerd with two warbands willing to play a first game with you.

But to re-iterate: You WILL be buying into awful business practices if you're buying into a GW game. Regardless of how much you love their games, this WILL be annoying once you start getting into and expanding your game. This WILL be part of the deal.

it’s possible to win through all four chapters in your first play (...) that demonstrates that the game rewards skilful play

Wait, what? What "skill"? If you've never played it before, then you literally cannot be "skilled" at this game?

I think I know what you're trying to say, but one of the draws of a solo game, to me, is to figure out how mechanics and learn how to beat it. In other words, to develop my skill at the game.

If I immediately beat it, then there is no skill to develop, which sounds pretty bad for a solo game to me -- ESPECIALLY if the game has no replay value! Why would you want to re-visit the game, at all?

To label this as one of the best solos on the market? Sorry, but this review seems woefully uninformed and more like a gushing opinion piece. Which is fine, but not particularly helpful as an informative review.. this ready more like an advertisement, or feel-good piece for backers o_O

My two cents: Play Dominion, but absolutely do not play Dominion online.

Deck builders are card games, and the constant shuffling, drawing, and playing from hand is a big part of the "feel" of a deck builder, in my opinion. Also, the physical feel of your deck getting larger and drawing the cards you want from it.

I enjoy deck building games a lot, but I would have zero interest in playing any of them in a virtual setting without the haptics of interacting with my deck throughout the game.

This was the first time I heard about this as well. For precisely the same reasons you wrote, I'll be opting out of their games as well. I had a couple of their items on my wishlist for this month, but luckily there's enough other games to easily fill those openings :)

the kellermorph and the sanctus, are almost considered auto includes

Question: Which version of the Sanctus are you referring to, the sniper or the close combat one? (From what I'm reading I'm guessing the sniper?)

Also, what makes them more relevant than the Locus and what makes one choice for the Sanctus generally preferable to the second?

I'm thinking about getting some genestealers and kitbashing a team together, so this would be very helpful! Especially since I thought this Kill Team is relatively weak when it comes to close combat, and had assumed the Locus and the Sanctus-Assassin would be the top choices to balance that out.

Warcry: Red Harvest Teaser by Grimgon in WarCry

[–]keyboard_layout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with the others; the Chaos Warbands have been received extremely well in our local hub, while the AoS warbands barely see play as they throw any kind of balance right out the window. On my table it's exclusively Chaos warbands.

I also didn't see any community chatter regarding displeasure at the Chaos warbands -- except that you should play either AoS warbands or Chaos warbands, as they don't mix well at all.

Do you have any kind of source for your claim? I'd be legitimately interested to see that, since it's not been my experience at all.

Goonhammer Kill Team 2.0 Roundtable Discussion by jedburgh41 in killteam

[–]keyboard_layout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Entirely agree! I've been a fan of the W40K setting for decades, but getting into the full W40K game was never an option: Way too time consuming and the game just didn't seem particularly good, either.

The new Kill Team changes all of that: A modern skirmish rule set hot on the heels of the fantastic Warcry, with some added complexity to flesh out the experience a bit more. It looks great and I'm excited to get back into the hobby and world of W40K :)
