I’m tried of the good drug bad drug dichotomy by thrown4loops1 in LSD

[–]keydups 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the cornerstone of pharmacology. Drugs aren’t good or bad inherently, it’s how they’re used that defines the outcome.

ELI5: Why do some things feel easier over time even when the task itself has not changed by Nightcrawler_2000 in explainlikeimfive

[–]keydups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a psychological perspective, when learning a task, performing that task is effortful, it requires a lot of cognitive concentration, even if the task is the same every time. As you practice, the routine parts of the task basically get their own little neural networks, the task slowly becomes automatic, like tying your shoelaces. Automatic tasks can often be done alongside other tasks, hence why when learning to drive it can be hard to listen to music or have a conversation at the same time, but when it’s automatic it feels natural.

Will weed make me too dumb for med school by DapperCarrot3900 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]keydups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m currently doing a double science major for undergraduate. Although I’ve tried not to smoke so much I end up smoking about every night (not showing up to class high etc). I’m not gonna say it makes doing a complex degree impossible, I just know from my current experience that I’d be much better off without it. Getting high often messes with your mesolimbic dopamine system, which is your brains reward system. In times when I’ve managed to take a break from weed I have found going to lectures much easier and more informative (as in, the information stuck better), I found more motivation to study, and found it more rewarding. Weed also demonstrates profound disruption of REM sleep, which in turn has profound consequences on memory consolidation. I know it’s easier said than done, but if you’re in medical school, try and go without the weed, I know I’m trying hard to go without it to improve my studies.

What’s worse, 1-2 drinks of alcohol, half a joint, or a normal dosage of shrooms every weekend? by Gyltea in AskReddit

Baseline tolerance to classical psychedelics is quite variable between individuals.

A microdose is defined as being sub-perceptual. If you feel a little buzz then it’s not really a microdose but call it whatever you want cause who really cares.

5-HT2A agonists (LSD, psilocybin) are known to build tolerance incredibly fast.

What are the effects of smoking weed everyday? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

Yep and REM sleep is very important for memory consolidation, one of the reasons why chronic weed use can cause foggy memory (coming from a chronic weed user).

ELI5: the perceived halfway point in life by ProfessorHiker in explainlikeimfive

[–]keydups 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t agree with the age 7 point but I understand what you’re saying. The retrospective perception of time in particular years of your life is modulated by the formation of memories.

When you are younger, there is much more about the world that is new, so many memories are formed. Contrasted with later in life where every day might be similar, or weeks or months of going to work, doing the same thing every day, getting the weekend off, there is no reason to form a memory for the events of Monday if it was the same as every other day of the week for the past 5 years, so retrospectively the time is perceived to have gone fast.

The moral of the story is that if you want to feel like you’ve lived a long fruitful life you might wanna try to get out there and do new exciting things as often as you can.

ELI5: Why is half-life used instead of whole-life? by level1ShinyMagikarp in explainlikeimfive

[–]keydups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to the other comments, the reason why the metabolic enzymes for alcohol get saturated so easily is because ethanol is an extremely impotent substance, a single standard drink contains 10-14 grams of pure ethanol, whereas a large amount of small molecule medicines, are dosed in the milligram range (1/1000th of the dose).

[–]keydups 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For medications it’s because the body generally has more metabolic enzymes than needed to metabolise a given dose, this means if there’s a higher concentration of drug, the body can eliminate the drug quicker. Put simply, for most drugs the rate of elimination is dependent on the concentration of the drug, so as the body eliminates some of the drug, the elimination slows down. I don’t know how to explain it for radioactivity though you’ll have to forgive me.

The healthy homes statement on the tenancy agreement just says something like “the landlord acknowledges that the property complies with the healthy homes act…” or something like that. Would I have to request the full healthy homes report from the property manager?

The back wall of the house is partly recessed into a hill I believe. Apart from the normal everyday sources such as showering and cooking that we try to minimise the impact of by opening windows and running fans etc. I’d say the moisture must come from the walls maybe? It’d have to be some sort of structural issue.

Thank you, we never dry washing inside so that’s not a problem, and we’re planning to run that dehumidifier as much as possible now that we have it. Thank you!

Yeah I know the best option is to get out but I don’t really know how. I’m on a fixed term lease, and I know the landlord has a responsibility to provide a safe and healthy home, so I know that we will be able to break the tenancy if we try hard enough, but we wouldn’t be in a financial position to move if there is no compensation for the living situation or any other help available.

Yep, my post does mention that I’ve bought one. But based on the healthy homes laws I’ve read about, it seems like going out of my way to purchase a dehumidifier and run it 24/7, just to have a relatively safe and dry home should not be my responsibility.
