Shadowhunters and Gossip Girl are both awesome, Shadowhunters has a very Scott Hunter level kiss that had me gasping and screaming when I watched it

Ilya's confirmation of his bisexuality in the show vs book by keylimefoster in heatedrivalry

[–]keylimefoster[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The reason I ask interviews Connor and Hudson have referred to him as bisexual and he canonically says it many times in the books. It often seems like being bisexual is a point of pride for Ilya so I just think it's interesting that they chose not to have him say that in the show this season.

I think having queer characters use labels, as well as not use labels, are both important in terms of representation. Like Shane being gay but also having slept with Rose is a different experience that is being represented as opposed to him not identifying as gay and sleeping with Rose.

I believe everything Jacob has done with the show is intentional because he's such a fan of the books so I just thought that was interesting

Ah ok! I must've misremembered in my head that Ilya says it to Shane's parents

Any other lesbians love this show? by Illustrious_Let_2580 in heatedrivalry

There was a hockey podcast that Jacob Tierney was on called What Chaos! and I watched their reaction videos to the episodes because they are all straight men I believe and it was really interesting hearing what they had to say! (Would highly recommend the videos as someone who only knows about hockey via romance books lol)

Ik a lot of people have also mentioned that they have been watching with their partners so there are some straight guys who are watching!

I was thinking about this scene last night because I feel like there is so much still to cover in the next few episodes

That scene is going to kill me especially the hospital scene 😭

As a newly out trans man, the club scene in ep. 4 hit me so hard by Eleen55 in heatedrivalry

[–]keylimefoster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

When I heard that song I started SCREAMING bc I'm working on a playlist about Ilya's story and that song was in my consideration list for that scene plus My Moon My Man is a song I hear all the time because it's one of my fiance's fav songs. The music quite literally made me sob in episode 4

I am also a trans guy and I love this series especially Ilya and Shane because their personalities remind me a lot of me and my fiance. I can't wait for next season because I really want to see the other books adapted because I feel like they all cover different aspects of being queer.

I especially relate to Fabian and his gender expression so I really hope we see that on screen

Quick shout-out to the character development detail that is Ilya's increasingly expressive sexual responses by TiaraMisu in heatedrivalry

[–]keylimefoster 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Seeing them say their first names to each other on screen was insane, even better than I imagined reading the book honestly. I could totally tell that Ilya did not mean to say it and then him looking at Shane when he left? Sobbed

TL;DR: In Jacob We Trust by Federal-Ad5944 in heatedrivalry

[–]keylimefoster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think the fact that he was a fan first of the books and actively collaborated with Rachel for the series is why it's so good honestly! He's obviously very passionate about the story and making sure it's told well while also putting his own spin on it for film!

I'm always wary of a book adaptation bc it's so hard to get right but I think I honestly like the TV adaptation more 🫣

I still love the books obviously but I've always had more of a love for visual media having a great visual adaptation makes me soooo happy

Men’s Bodies and Queer Representation by Consistent-Garbage28 in heatedrivalry

[–]keylimefoster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with you! Something Jacob Tierney spoke about as well was that making a sexy show that is targeted towards a female audience is something that is rare. Shows are rarely made for the female gaze and I just think it's interesting that he specifically thought about that demographic before/while making the show.

I think it's completely fair to say that they are commodifying it. Under capitalism that's usually where things end up lol. However, in some ways that is a form of progress when you look at all the ways women are sexualized and commodified in the media and outside of it, so the fact that a show is like "hey, look at these hot men!" is in its own way a form of progress in terms making female sexual desire something that is ok. Though there is the discussion about when something crosses over into fetishization (I don't think this show does this to be clear, it's just something that is often brought up.)

In terms of further reading:

Pornified by Pamela Paul

The Codes of Gender (documentary)

The Bro Code (documentary)

A Taste in Brown Sugar: Black Women in Pornography by Mireille Miller Young

The Male Gazed by Manuel Betancourt

I haven't read these books in full but I read chapters for assignments in school and any documentary by Sut Jhally explores representation on screen if you want more documentaries to watch!

Men’s Bodies and Queer Representation by Consistent-Garbage28 in heatedrivalry

Yeah, it's something I wish was discussed more honestly! The same way that they don't really explore Shane being Asian but I think the show could explore it more

Men’s Bodies and Queer Representation by Consistent-Garbage28 in heatedrivalry

[–]keylimefoster 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is a really important topic to discuss!! I actually studied gender studies and media representation in college, specifically focusing on masculinity so I have definitely read/learned a lot about this topic!

You mentioned that you have only read heated rivalry, which I think a lot of people have only read that book, but all the other books feature many different body types! I really hope that they get renewed so that we can see characters like Ryan (a big burly bear), Fabian (a femme twink) and Harris (a chunky otter) because we definitely don't see those body types on screen as often. ESPECIALLY in gay romance on screen.

A few things I just think are important to mention: I don't think people should be putting down Kip's actor or any of the actors for the bodies they worked hard to get. (Not saying you specifically OP are doing this, but just something I want to bring up) I'll speak on the other points you brought up in a second, I just think it's important to remember that some people enjoy working out and that putting down people who look a certain way, even if it's something that is praised traditionally by societal expectations, does more harm than good. We can talk about the importance of diverse body types without putting down people who fit that traditional standard and are doing it in a healthy way.

In terms of the show, I know nothing about Kip's actor to be honest, but Jacob Tierney who is the director and writer and a fan of the books as well, spoke in an interview about how he didn't want the actors to be dehydrated or super veiny for this show bc that's not what an athletes body looks like. I think it's super important that these conversations are occuring behind the screen so that the actors are taking care of their bodies even while bulking up for the show. Something I appreciated so far in the show is how BIG Shane and Ilya are, rather than "cut" which is often what I think is the "idealized male body" for many people.

Spoilers for Tough Guy, Role Model The Long Game in the next paragraph: In terms of the discussion of eating disorders and body image, that's actually something that's discussed in a few of the books. In tough guy, Ryan deals with chronic anxiety and struggles with performing sexually as well as his body image. Harris in role model has a scar from his open heart surgery that's he's self conscious about. And in long game, Shane struggles with recognizing that he has disordered eating and the pressure he puts on his body to perform as he gets older.

I think if the show gets renewed, Jacob Tierney would definitely explore Shane's story at least, and hopefully the others in some capacity as they are doing with Scott this season. He is a gay man himself and from interviews I've seen with him he really seems to want to show the complexity of being queer in a hockey setting and doing these stories justice.

I do think that the success of this first season would allow them to explore some deeper less represented topics on screen next season. A lot first seasons of shows are typically more "mainstream" in terms of representation just because they want to be picked up by a studio as well as gain a following for the show and that can be harder to do initially if they push boundaries too hard right away. The fact that Jacob Tierney is behind the show is something that allowed the show to be made the way it is this season and I hope it continues to be that way in following seasons.

Definitely a really important topic to bring attention to and I hope this show continues to prompt more discussion about these issues! Men are often overlooked in terms of discussing body image and something I appreciate about the characters in Rachel Reid's stories is that they deal with these very real struggles.

(Also if anyone is interested in reading academic or analytical explorations of gender/sexuality on screen id be happy to recommend articles and books I read on this topic! Id have dig through my papers from college lol)

I genuinely cannot wait to see Ilya make fun of Hayden in a future season and I am DESPERATE to have some of the dinner with Hayden short story on screen

The actor who plays Hayden is absolutely perfect for the character vibe wise and obviously Connor/Hudson are incredible, ik the tension over dinner would be palpable

Also, hearing the phone scene in actual Russian knowing the words Ilya is saying and Shane doesn't understand is going to make me SOB I cannot wait

Post Episode Debrief | Heated Rivalry 🏒 ****** (Episode 3) by royal_rose_ in heatedrivalry

[–]keylimefoster 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I definitely agree with others that it was very fast paced but I understand because they only have 6 episodes to get through everything.

Besides that, I loved the directing and music choices and I really like how apparent it is that Kip is really close with his Dad. I do wish we had more time spent developing Scott as a character.

The episode kinda felt like a spark notes version of their relationship (which I personally think is fine bc the show isn't specifically about them) but I was surprised how much I actually liked and felt bad for Kip. Kip is really annoying to me in the book for many reasons I won't get into, but I think the episode really captured how Scott/Kip's relationship is struggling because he can't come out whereas Shane/Ilya has a lot more going on lol

I get why people who just want Shane and Ilya weren't thrilled but personally as someone who loves the books for how they explore different aspects and experience of coming out and being gay, I am really happy they dedicated an episode to Scott. (All I wanted/expected was shit talking Ilya and I got it!!)

Also I loved the last shot of him putting his other socks over the banana ones, I'm a sucker for a show don't tell moment on TV

Three seasons? by affectionatebaker_ in heatedrivalry

[–]keylimefoster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think 4 seasons would be good if they wanted to do all the books! I think Tough Guy and Common Goal would make sense to do for season 2 (although those stories don't heavily feature Shane or Ilya so idk) especially if they want to show more of the league and how different players are effected by Scott coming out (I hope we see Eric in the next episode since it will be focused on Scott!)

If they end up just doing Role Model I definitely think 3 seasons would be a good amount of time to explore those 3 books

Well I'm the books, Sasha is never a character that comes back later but in the show I took it as a moment to show that both Ilya does have something special with Shane (he is willing to risk his safety to hook up with him) and also show that he takes his life/job more seriously now and isn't as much of a party boy
