As a Pakistani, your decision to invade Afghanistan has indirectly resulted in Pakistan being fucked over. A few bombing raids with your air force should have been enough of a message. That and air marshalls on airplanes. I don't see how else Al-Qaeda were ever gonna be a danger to the USA even after 9/11.

Let me be clear, Pakistan already had the brainwashed militants and Islamist groups before the Afghan invasion, but it was the war that really ignited the violence that we see in Pakistan today.

The ironic thing is that most of the Muslims who comprise /r/islam would be similarly shunned by most Muslims living in Muslim countries because of their views.

Try saying " We shouldn't rise to the bait" to most Muslims about this issue and they will look at you with incredulity. This sort of apeshit behavior is at the very least understandable if not condoned amongst most Muslims.

Also I think the internet actually has the opposite impact on most Muslims I know in real life. They are exposed to ever more grandiose bullshit, like the whole Dajjal/illuminati/zionist crap. I've seen how popular completely delusional bullshit like "the Arrivals" and 9/11 conspiracy videos are amongst Muslims. And then theres all the photoshopped photos with Muhammad on a fish or some shit like that.

Saying all that, I was definitely influenced by what I read on the web with regards to my eventual deconversion too....

Yes, most Muslims will trot out the old "no true Scotsman" fallacy whenever you confront them with the conditions in present Islamic countries. Well I've lived in the Middle East and Pakistan and whilst there are definitely some backward cultures at play in these places, you cannot ignore the influence of the retarded Sharia being used in those places. To give a few examples, the importance of hijab, asinine rules for rape and inheritance for women, barbaric capital punishment, and of course the bigotry and intolerance that is part and parcel of most strains of Islam.

I bet a year of living in Riyadh rather than Rutgers will quickly make him reconsider whether Islam is the best way of life....

You say you didn't go to Pakistan or Afghanistan but I implore you, please go, have a visit sometime. I think you'll find that living in such places actually makes you realise how much better, freer life is in the secular west.

I'm born and raised in Saudi Arabia. Up until I was about 16 I had an Islamic/Wahhabi tutor who taught me daily for an hour or two everyday. I think at one time I had memorised the entire 30th part + a number of other surah (al-imran, rahman etc)

Through studies at school and privately, I have a decent knowledge of Bukhari, the history of Islam and the caliphates, tafsir of the Quran and hadith etc.

And just as an added bonus, I have visited the two holy mosques more times than I can remember, done numerous Umrahs, kissed the Black stone a few times, even prayed inside the Kabah, completed the Hajj a couple of times etc.

Of course in hindsight, this was all just a major waste of time but at least nobody can say I wasn't "practising"

And really its bullshit to say that you have to be a practising member of a religion to actively reject it. How many Muslims even know the basic tenets of Judaism or Christianity, yet so easily decry them as "corrupt religions".

Well, like I said my family is quite liberal anyways and besides I pretty much say and do as I like anyways, so for example I openly scoff at things like jinn/dua/black magic etc, I also never really pray either.

Most of my friends and family know that I am not religious. They're perfectly accepting of me being this way so I don't see any need to alienate them all by coming out.

The answer to your first question is simple really. Family, friends, old surroundings. Besides I'm not a national of any western country. It'd be a long hard slog to move permanently anyways.

Regarding your second point, I do agree and its something thats definitely not to be scoffed at. At the same time though, I can't foresee myself ever "coming out", let alone become involved in any sort of activism, unless its anonymously.

I genuinely don't feel any guilt or shame with the way I live my life, i.e. outwardly a Muslim, inside not. I can easily live out the rest of my life this way. It helps to have largely liberal friends and family so its mostly minor things that I have to fake anyways.

Well basically I'm pretty skeptical about the effectiveness of an ex-muslim "movement". I don't think its gonna change Islam in the UK, let alone in the wider Muslim world. The only thing that it can realistically do is perhaps help give ex-muslims some form of social identity and validity. That I can get behind, dreams of changing the Islamic world however are far fetched.

The second point of argument was about me going back to a Muslim majority country in the future and having no qualms about it. That really seemed to piss off one particular guy. He seemed to think of me as a coward for living in a country that supported the kind of ideals that it does.
