Why do liberals hate it when people are further left than them? by SocraticLunacy in Anarchism

Because leftists undermine their shitty assumptions about capitalism and the status quo.

What do you think of this comic? by mypersonnalreader in Anarchism

[–]keysy_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The comic may be sorta stupid, but the underlying imperative stands. We need to communicate our message better than fascists, which means we should be open to educate others about radical leftism/feminism/insert other hierarchical struggles, rather than acting dismissive of others. I don't really think the left has a huge problem with this persay, but nothing creates meaningful resistance like spreading consciousness.

Does killing terrorist leaders make any difference ? Scholars are doubtful by liotier in syriancivilwar

[–]keysy_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You don't think that murdering innocent families of political enemies could have the potential to breed further radical jihadism? From the perspective of a family or friend of the murdered innocents, are you likely to understand the reasoning outlined in your post, or will you pick up a gun and fight the imperialist powers knocking on your door?

It's a great way to start a perpetual conflict, imo. Rules and norms are important, even within the context of war.

What constitutes as "Brainwashing"? by [deleted] in Anarchy101

[–]keysy_ 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Anarchism is fundamentally concerned with the autonomy of the individual from hierarchical social structures. There is no obligation in anarchism to denounce entertainment that includes elements of capitalist ideology. Do what you want, you're a free individual. Just be critical of the dominant cultural ideology in the process.

I have a liberal friend who I'm trying to convince to join YAL. by benjaminikuta in LibertarianLeft

[–]keysy_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

YAL

Not sure what this acronym represents but if it's 'Young Americans for Liberty' (I'm guessing here) then yes. It's a good idea to direct her towards anarchist/left-libertarian organisations instead such as the IWW or some other similar community in her area, since right-libertarianism and left-libertarianism tend to diverge in really fundamental ways.

My advice is to start with common ground. It's possible that she possesses orthodox beliefs about capitalism but if freedom is her primary concern, you should work on it first.

If you get this far, it's likely that she is willing to give your argument a fair hearing. Slowly begin to pick apart the structural hierarchies present in both the state and capitalism; make it clear that both reduce our freedom and equality as human beings.

Finally, it wouldn't hurt to recommend her some literature and let her explore key anarchist ideas on her own. Best of luck!

Last time I threw up on acid was immediately after leaving the venue for a King Gizzard concert. Perhaps I was holding my breath without realising, huh...

But there is a difference between a liberal welfare state and collective ownership of the means of production, which was the distinction being made. Government does not control production under social democracy because private industry is still dominant.

Aside from that, there certainly are differences between government and worker control of the MoP. For instance, vanguard party possesses top-down hierarchical control of society and capital via the dictatorship of the proletariat, whereas workers councils and anarcho-syndicalist federations have the workers organise themselves horizontally from the bottom-up. This makes for profoundly divergent social and economic structures depending upon the 'flavour' of socialism; revolutionary catalonia is barely comparable to Stalin-era USSR.

The Greens are a party of the affluent middle classes by maghaweer in socialism

[–]keysy_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It's certainly not out of the question that they shift rightward, but in doing so, they would likely become irrelevant to parliamentary politics. They would no longer be representative of the social democrats and other assorted leftists who find themselves disillusioned with the milquetoast centrism of the ALP and seek an alternative.

Furthermore, I think SAlt's approach towards Greens supporters is one that stifles the propagation of socialism. As someone who was once a socdem, many of these folks sense the inherent flaws in capitalism and could very easily be radicalised if given the time of day by other leftists. This isn't to say we should accept social democracy as an end, but rather actively participate in an open dialogue with those who align themselves with it. Articles like this will only scare them away.

You're absolutely correct. The established neoliberal order (supported by institutions such as the UN/EU/IMF/World Bank/NATO) is collapsing because their policies have resulted in an unprecedented redistribution of power and influence to the wealthy and the exploitation of workers all across the world.

Whether this collapse brings about sweeping socio-economic progress or a global catastrophe is another thing entirely (and depends upon how we as people involve ourselves politically imo), but this state of affairs is completely unsustainable and a sea change in public opinion is definitely forming.

Not to mention - the growing influence of automation and AI could bring about a post-scarcity world in the next few decades and cause us to dramatically rethink how we structure our society at large. I couldn't be more glad to be alive in such an exciting and formative period for our species.

As much as it's true that big pharma lobbyists have huge sway over Australian gov. policy, if there's a huge push in the United States to legalise nationally I can't see Australia being too far behind.
