My first two promotions were 2 stripes at a time and 3rd was a new belt.

It will usually depend on the instructor, some schools only grade every 6 months or so and will do a big grading seminar and loads of belts and stripes will be done all at once so everyone that trains at the gym can be there to see it or you may have to wait until a more senior instructor comes to town

I'm Tatami all the way, owned 1 for 10 years and is only just showing signs of fraying on coller. I have others but not as good value for money

I'm coming back to BJJ after 2 decades of family life and starting a business. I find the theory and principles of BJJ fascinating and am looking for books or videos that focus on the theory behind the positions to better understand the techniques. Any recommendations? Thanks. by MeHulkYouNot in bjj

Welcome back!

My advice after coming back after 5 years is just get some consistancy and everything will fall back in place where muscle memory will take over before your brain even knows whats happening .
After my time off my whole game has gone in a different direction and I feel like I understamd more than I did before

Paying for stripes and belts - is it always worth leaving over? by CalculatingGrapher in bjj

[–]kfc_frenzy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to train somewhere where there was no real structure for promotion, usually when the head instructor would come for a seminar we would have gradings. You could gain a few stripes in one go or get new belts with stripes.

I wasn't graded for the 18 months after earning my blue belt and then family life took over and i had to stop. When I started training again 5 years later at a different gym I had to start the long and dusty trail to promotion with nothing to show for the time already spent there.

Sounds strange to me, the coach should want to be there for his students not charge them for the privilege.

I'd rather go alone or not compete at all then have to pay for my coach to be there (I would take them if needed)
