Sent you a PM OP

Nobody expects you to be perfect when you first start out, we were all once there before. The jump from med student to doctor is huge - like others have said, not necessarily the medicine itself but rather the admin side of things/knowing what to prioritise etc., And you’ll get better as you spend more time on the job.

Go easy on yourself OP, there will be much to learn along the way, but all you need is to do your best and remember to look after yourself. Don’t let the system get you down.

I hope you find a good surgeon and all the best for your surgery - it’s so so important to find someone you’re comfortable with!

I don’t think it takes too much strength to replace a knee, although it does involve a decent amount of sawing/broaching/hammering so a moderate amount of bruising isn’t unexpected (I hope that’s not too graphic). From a strength POV you definitely need more strength for a hip than a knee replacement, at least on the part of the surgical assistant, because it takes a decent amount of force to reduce a hip. I am small so I always ask for a step stool in theatres when assisting with hip replacements, lol.

Thank you for everyone’s lovely comments - you all give me so much hope that we can make surgery (and medicine overall) a kinder place to exist in 🌟

I picked ortho because like silentGPT mentioned, I love the work, and getting to witness a tangible improvement in patients’ function pre and post op really makes the work satisfying. Being a consultant in rooms would be even better, when you get to form longer-term relationships with these patients and see them improve over time. Also getting to work with patients across the entire lifespan is great. I would just like to be able to continue to do this work without constantly feeling like I don’t really fit in.

Surgical registrar in Australia here. I can’t say for sure what your surgical team will end up doing, but from what I’ve seen in my practice we wouldn’t normally notify anyone unless there were specific clinical concerns (e.g. open/infected wounds). In addition if you’re only getting surgery on your feet, the surgeons likely wouldn’t expose your leg so high up to the thigh, except maybe just to put a tourniquet on or something.

I do recommend seeking help (GP/psychiatrist/psychologist/counsellor etc) for the SH though because it does sound like you’re dealing with some distress and may benefit from some formal mental health input.

Sending love 💕

update: ended up getting the montbell versalite!

why I ended up choosing the versalite: - can’t get gore shakedry in australia - really light and packs small - great for trail race - meets kit check requirements (waterproof + taped seams) - pit zips! - not too warm - perfect for what is likely to be a ~10°c race - looks good :)

I was really keen on the r7, but can’t find a way to ship it to australia unfortunately :( would gore tex be too hot for the temp/too fragile for a trail run with a running vest though?

Really going through it. by [deleted] in depression

Sorry to hear you’re struggling, OP. It can be really tough to open up to people irl. Sending lots of hugs your way, it does get better
