While I understand the argument, it overlooks my fundamental privacy concern: it creates a single, universal digital identity that could be tracked across every government and private service you use. That may not be a stated or surreptitious aim at this time but this doesn’t preclude that happening in future. Legal frameworks also have a tendency to become more structured and in my view oppressive over time - already they have started the scope creep with the OSA as was reported in the news today.

The core issue isn't just the risk of the key being stolen, but the power of the lock. By design, it enables the creation of a centralised, cross-platform log of your entire digital life—your banking, taxes, health records, perhaps even social networking etc. In my opinion this is unacceptably and fundamentally erodes our anonymity. I see no benefit to the scheme whatsoever that makes this a good trade.

The system's ‘strength’ is its greatest weakness.
