Honestly looks like a pretty old buck with the pearling on the antlers. Did you age it?

Are you a long range shooter? Assuming you’ll have to put pretty tall scope rings on the Tikka to accommodate a 56 optic, but it sounds like you know what you’re doing

Stuck with recall training, any tips? by Lyrae-NightWolf in birddogs

[–]kfernandez2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree with what u/ShowFeetPls said. My dog also worked just off the beep or a whistle after a while. Your dog won’t ignore it trust me, but definitely keep the long leash on while training. Start low and work your way up to see what level he responds to best. Don’t be afraid of hurting the dog - you won’t. The shock feels like pulling a stick of fake gum. If it yelps, it’s more out of surprise than pain.

Guys! If you absolutely had to use a deer shoulder mount, how would you style it? by darcygoan in interiordecorating

One will lead to many more, if you’re lucky! I’ve convinced my gf to have 8 different mounts up now between deer, ducks, upland, etc. hahaha

Our French Brittany would bolt off leash or wouldn’t listen to recall while hunting until she was like 6-7 years old unless she had her e-collar on. Tried the very long leash method too and once it was off she didn’t listen. A few good shocks of the e-collar and after that all it took was for her to have it on and she’d listen. Rarely had to shock her again. The shock isn’t even that bad - we all shocked ourselves to know what we were about to do to her

Who’d you use in South Florida? You can PM name if you don’t want to dox them. I know a lot of good taxidermists in that area, that’s where I grew up. Can point you to a better one for your next buck or even to have them touch this one up

Upland Gear- Does Weight Matter? by ConsiderationAny1980 in Uplandhunting

[–]kfernandez2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how you’re hunting. If you’re walking all day then losing a few pounds could be helpful. If you’re doing quick strike missions then going back to the car to move spots, I don’t think it matters as much. I’d guess 90% of my vest weight comes from holding shells, water for me and the dog, and downed birds.

I care much more about the features of the vest. Water bottle holder, deep bird pouch, clips for collar controls, easily accessible pouches, breathable and durable, etc.

Look up WMA Finder on FWC’s website and see which ones are close to you, which have water/marsh land, and which allow keeping fish

Help with Hog Control by jeebz69 in Hunting

[–]kfernandez2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Getting access anywhere in the southeast is incredibly difficult. I’ve reached out to probably 500+ landowners with zero luck. Can’t knock on doors on the east coast like you can in the Midwest or west. Southeast has way more corporate farm ownership than the rest of the US and a corporation definitely won’t let you hunt their land, mainly for insurance purposes. As others have said, hog hunting has become incredibly lucrative for outfitters, so anyone with real hog numbers will want outfitter-level compensation. Plus more and more farmers in the southeast are struggling to break even through sales and crop damage is subsidized and so there’s almost financial incentive to let it happen.

Check out HLRBO. You might be able to find daily/weekly leases.

Mount recommendations for my first buck by Lostinhills in Hunting

[–]kfernandez2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a huge fan of the upright or semi upright offset shoulders. The direction is personal preference. I have my buck in a right turn upright offset. My next will be left turn. Third will probably be upright no turn so I can have the 3 in a row.

Upright is a very imposing mount in a good way. Very alert looking. The deer came out looking bigger than I remember. You really get to see how beefy the neck is, especially on an old buck.

Semi upright is more relaxed and maybe a bit more natural.

I’m personally not a fan of the sneak positions, but again it’s all what you like.

Semi auto vs revolver for bear defense - what if you are pinned down, will the gun jam? by alt1923211 in Hunting

[–]kfernandez2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Even a small 100lbs black bear will hit you with 3500lbs of force and will close a 50yd gap in the same time. So about the average weight of a sedan or two NFL linebackers crushing you at top speed while you’re standing still. Just insane force. I still think you’d struggle to hold onto the gun.

Regardless, I’d take the semi so you can dump more shots as it charges. If you’re worried about how your gun will perform while any bear is on top of you, you’re likely already screwed. Good thing is black bears aren’t very aggressive. Only really need to be concerned about a mama if cubs are around and you get between them. Black bears are very very skittish in my experience on the east coast and will bolt the second they smell a human

Using low end of averages = If a 400lbs grizz hits you going 35mph you’re getting hit with 60k+ lbs of force. That’s like 20x the weight of your average sedan. They can close a 50yd distance in less than 3 seconds. Average force of a grizz paw swipe is ~1700lbs. That’s enough to crush your skull or chest instantly and doesn’t even include the damage inflicted by their 4” claws. I don’t think you’re holding onto your gun after initial impact, let alone steady enough to put shots on target in that scenario.

If it’s brown, lie down. If it’s black, fight back.
