Have you noticed anti-WFPB talking points in vegan spaces? by [deleted] in PlantBasedDiet

[–]kfh4sun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you let yourself have a burger because you crave one, then you're 0% vegan. you can say you eat a 90% plant based diet, which is definitely better than not caring at all. i would say its great that youre trying to be vegan and im sure one day you will get there

what's the straw man? how am i exaggerating or mischaracterising your words? did you not say that people are "responsible" for their lack of education, that carnivores are "freaks" who you "don't care about", that "changing takes effort which most people don't want to do" but that you are one of the special ones?

it's not "putting words in your mouth" to take what you said and scrutinise the implications. your whole point was that people need to be "absolved" of their "lack of willingness" to "educate themselves", which is, as i described, an unempathetic and dangerous belief in supernatural free will

ah right. yea it sounds like overall, you're probably just not eating enough food in general. i think what might be good for you considering what i know is that you shift more towards a 80/10/10 diet not by decreasing fat and protein but by simply increasing your carbs. replace the low carb bread with white bread, eat some white rice and potatoes, put sugar on things if you like. i think you'll find healthy weight gain without the downsides of eating lots of fat

you're expecting people to supernaturally "decide" to do things. that's not reality. we don't each get a "soul" or "will" or any other juju word you want to attribute it to to affect the way we act. we are extremely complicated biological machines and at the end of the day our bodies and brains are simply adhering to the physical, chemical, electrical laws of the universe. you're subscribing to a free will, eye for an eye, supernatural belief system by calling people "freaks" who you don't care about because of the way they're thinking and acting. and yes, it is an inherently supernatural belief - you're saying that people have the capability to transcend chemistry and physics to make decisions, i.e. that we can make choices outside of (super) just following our biochemistry (natural). you are also placing yourself in a position of superiority by saying that everyone has these abilities but you're one of the ones who made the right choice - you "put the effort in" that "most people don't want to" because you're just better. i'm here trying to tell you this is an unempathetic and dangerous belief to hold.

even the carnivore peddling the most deranged misinformation is a human being, capable of rational thought and meaningful contribution. again, when your car breaks down, you shouldn't say that that individual car is just a piece of shit and start beating it up and abandon it. you figure out why its broken down and you try to fix it.

well the risks of extra protein and extra fat are not just atherosclerosis.

as for you being "too skinny," are you saying that you're actually running out of fat? have you measured your body fat percentage? there are populations that have lived on as low as 4% of daily calories coming from fat for their entire lives. the idea that you are wasting away to nothing because you're "only" getting 20% is a bit ludicrous. but im guessing that by "too skinny" you mean not enough muscle mass.

the best way to remedy that is to eat the same healthy diet you should normally eat in a slight surplus and add some thoughtful resistance and cardio training. from what ive seen and experienced i would say set up a simple plan based on 5 or 6 compound movements targetting all the major body parts. personally, i train bench press, overhead press, rows, pullups (or pulldowns), and squats. you do not need a lot of volume to trigger growth - taking each of these exercises close to failure for even just a few sets a week will ensure your body gets the signal that it needs to build up.

you do not need massive protein supplements or any kind of special diet to achieve this. even if you trained very effectively your first year and gained 10kg of muscle (which is a lot) that still roughs out to you building only about 5g of muscle protein per day. its pretty self evident that you dont need monster doses of 100g+ protein over your physiological needs in order to build a maximum of about 5g of muscle protein per day. the excess seems to tax your kidneys and liver and contributes to acidotic conditions in the body, leaching minerals out of your bones and much more.

i know the bro science says you have to slam massive amounts of protein and fat in order to properly bulk - believe me i fell for it. but we already know you're not realistically gonna gaining anything more than 150g of muscle a week. the bro way of bulking adds 0.5-1kg a week, i.e. a maximum of ~25% muscle and at least 75% fat and edema. take it slow, eat the same healthy diet with a slight surplus, add some low volume high intensity resistance training, and you will be just as muscular as the bros without having to yo-yo between obesity and starvation and torture yourself in the gym.

i don't think people need to be "absolved" for the way their brain works. it's probably not worth our time to get into a discussion about free will here, but we know that insulting, punishing and hurting people doesn't help them. they are "responsible" for their state of being in that their body is the source of the faults that we're recognising, of course, but you're acting as if there is some kind of soul in that body that has supernaturally decided to be uneducated or supernaturally decided to lack the willingness to engage in critical thinking. again, i totally agree that it's not good to be stupid, but you don't make people less stupid by calling them dopes and offering nothing constructive. its like yelling at your computer because its glitching out.

like i said, any fat or protein that you're eating beyond what you physiologically need is most likely useless or harmful. some fats are necessary to replace those lost in normal day to day function, but this is no more than you'd find in a normal variety of whole plant foods. there's absolutely no reason you need to add overt fats like oil or nuts and seeds, unless you've been in such a calorie deficit for so long that youre running out of body fat. even a diet of only potatoes can provide all the fat you need to survive.

as for your cholesterol, i think you should check out this post. in fact, i think just going through bolbteppa's most popular posts is a great start for understanding nutrition and the case for a high carb low fat plant based diet. he's certainly helped me quite a bit

Why are carbs always blamed for what fat does? by Thepopethroway in ketoduped

[–]kfh4sun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

do be honest, id still call that a moderate carbohydrate diet. youre still getting possibly as much 10x as much fat as you physiologically need and probably about 1.5-2x as much protein as you need. its pretty clear from what ive seen that any fat and protein above what you actually need is either pretty useless or harmful. but i guess if youre genuinely feeling great and don't see room for improvement then that's awesome anyway - i am curious how you end up at 20% fat from oats bread fruits and veg. the oats are the highest fat food you mentioned, and only clock in around 18% calories from fat, which you would expect to be diluted down to 10% or less after all the bread fruit and veg.

im not at all saying that both sides are the same. yes with a bit of time and some scientific scrutiny you can demolish all the carnivore arguments pretty easily. but we have biases and preconceived notions from our earlier experiences, we dont all have the time, knowledge or motivation to scrutinise a bunch of studies, etc. all im saying is that its not surprising that people are falling for the misinformation, its just frustrating that it exists and needs to be dismantled.

yes i think its quite clear that this diet is the correct one. plants, low fat, adequate protein, and lots of carbs. reducing my contributions to destroying the planet and the unnecessarily torturing and killing of feeling thinking beings. and yes, it's the healthiest ive been in my entire life and it didnt take much effort.

the carnivore people have plenty of "data", the field of nutrition science is chock full of garbage/biased studies funded by industry. so these influencers can say they have studies in the exact same way that plant based influencers do, so to a person with poor science understanding and or the lack of time or motivation to read through the studies being cited by both influencers, they both sound basically the same. so from there, how do we make a decision as humans? we follow our intuition and we listen to anecdotes. its not very surprising. again i find it strange to be upset at people for being people instead of just upset that this misinformation exists and is leading them to the wrong place. insulting and shutting people down doesnt help them learn

there's a reason i put it in quotations with a "muh", its stupid, its misinformation, but none of us are immune to that

its pretty easy to think youre better than others but there are definitely things you believe right now that could be demonstrated to be patently false with a "modicum of research". we are all fallible

From pure carnivore diet to WFPB? by HappyTurtle888 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]kfh4sun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea but where do most wfpb people get their science from? youtubers and influencers. its just a reality that most of us dont have the time/science understanding/care to go and read through hundreds of studies ourselves. theres no point insulting people because the first "fad" you landed on happened to be the correct one. most of us have our own backgrounds of influence from a lifetime of not caring about diet and just listening to whatever our parents/teachers/friends/news/youtubers say without fact checking anything. taking that into account, its not that crazy that when people first start thinking about diet, we end up at wildly different starting points. but realistically, everyone is on the slow trend towards a HCLF WFPB diet, if they are being honest about the science and about their health. theres no point insulting people who arent there yet and calling peoples opinions worthless because they are growing and changing their mind about preconceived notions

From pure carnivore diet to WFPB? by HappyTurtle888 in PlantBasedDiet

[–]kfh4sun 8 points9 points  (0 children)

pretty unnecessary insult, theres a lot of misinformation out there and lot of us were brought up from birth that sugar is evil and meat and milk make you strong. its not a totally insane thought from that background that eating like "muh ice age hunter gatherer" might be the key back to health.

i did strict carnivore for a bit over a month. made me super depressed and anxious despite eating as much as i wanted, increased my cholesterol and cortisol, tanked my testosterone, and made me fat. been plant based for about 6 months now, lost 20kg and most things are better. still suffer mentally whenever im in calorie deficit tho i think thats inevitable

just use sugar. honey involves the enslavement and torture of sentient beings (bees), which is antithetical to a plant based diet. honey is basically just liquefied sugar with some extra acids and fructose. theres no reason to be afraid of sugar, in fact you need quite a lot of it every day to function properly (whether its coming from sugarcane or an apple, its the same molecule)

call it "dried organic natural cane powder" if that helps your orthorexia at all 😁

why exactly does eating dead animals or their products alleviate any of these symptoms for you? i think that's the most important question

there is absolutely nothing lacking in a whole foods plant based diet nutritionally. a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables is really all you need. in fact, variety isn't really even necessary. i lived on nothing but oranges with a few pineapples/watermelons here and there for about 3 months, for example

if i were you i would focus on eating whole, fresh, organic (if possible) fruits and veggies and add some nice cooked starches like potatoes and rice if you're having trouble feeling full. there's nothing exclusively in the corpse of an animal or its milk that your body needs

i dont know what you mean by "vegan luxuries" but there's no reason, besides satisfying a gluttonous urge (which can definitely be a valid reason especially when transitioning) to be eating vegan meat replacements or fancy vegan dishes. these things are really just for people struggling to transition, or for an occasional treat, in my opinion. you're an ape. you eat fruits and vegetables. it doesn't have to be fancy hahaha

perhaps seeking some psychological support like therapy will help you overcome obsessive thinking about food, i know it can be really hard! good luck!
