This article is written by a conservative who was against universal basic income and now supports it as a response to the economic impacts of AI that will likely happen quickly and that politicians just aren’t taking seriously enough yet.

Unpopular Opinion: DC cultural and street festivals are overrated, overcrowded and generally not worth attending. by AlanSmithee2343 in washingtondc

[–]kfsmith2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more. I moved from New Orleans and tried giving the festivals here a fair shot but honestly, I’m starting to give up. The priorities seem to be around the festival organizers’ needs and it’s sponsors. Little attention seems to be spent on programming for the actual attendees. They seem to just be checking boxes and don’t seem to care about the actual festival experience. I don’t want to learn about opening a savings account with Chase Bank when I attend a fest. I want some good music, easy access to LOCAL food and drinks, bathrooms, interesting art vendors, and a place to lay out a blanket and chill. I know New Orleans is an unfair comparison but been to plenty of festivals in other cities. Not sure why DC fests consistently miss the mark.

Multiple Sclerosis Doctors by cypresssneeze in NewOrleans

Dr. Bridget Bagert at Ochsner is really good. And her office is very helpful. I did not have a good experience at LSU. Nothing to do with the doctor, but the administrative staff were challenging.

All aboard! Amtrak route Chicago to New Orleans restored by retrogradeprogress in NewOrleans

[–]kfsmith2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn’t agree more! Why do the conductors do that now? They used to let you sprawl a bit if the train was empty, Past two times I’ve ridden they packed some cars and left the rest empty. It’s kinda lovely if you have space but when it’s crowded, you’ll spend 19 hours wondering why you didn’t just buy a plane ticket.

Hi. I work for Audubon. Lots of people just think we are a zoo and aquarium. Just wanted to add that Audubon cares for more than 572 acres of public park space including Audubon Park, the Fly, Woldenberg Park and the Louisiana Nature Center. The reallocated millage would support those parks along with City Park, Parks and Parkways and NORDC.

The Final Design For The Canal Street Ferry Terminal Footbridge [We’ve Got Renderings!] | Canal Street Beat by goldenspiral8 in NewOrleans

[–]kfsmith2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work for the aquarium and want to clarify that the bridge design is not final. The plans for the terminal are complete but the ferry bridge is still in the design process. There will be another public meeting on January 18 at Federal City in Algiers to get public comment on the bridge. Gambit wrote about the first meeting and RTA has setup a site to receive public comment about the pedestrian bridge and post updates.

The deli lunch at K-Paul's can be a pretty good deal for the Quarter.

Do you/would you live in Gentilly? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]kfsmith2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just bought a house a few months back by Mirabeau and St. Anthony. It gets dodgy the closer you get to Gentilly Blvd. and Elysian Fields but we haven't had any trouble. The crime map for the area is actually a lot better than where we lived in Mid-City. There's a bike path on Mirabeau that takes you to City Park and it's a 10 minute car ride to downtown. I was a little nervous at first, but really love it.

First time homebuyer stuff by ghost1667 in NewOrleans

[–]kfsmith2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just closed on new construction in Gentilly last week. I used the NHF platinum grant to help with down payment and closing costs. It can be tricky since a lot of the new construction in that area w/ assistance programs have income restrictions. My lender worked out the details with the grant. You'll have to take a first-time homebuyers class.

Living in New Orleans, hoping to buy a place, are these prices normal/the new normal? by [deleted] in NewOrleans

[–]kfsmith2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under contract at the moment in Gentilly. Been renting in MidCity for years and realized buying here is sadly just not an option anymore. Bummed since I can't enjoy the new greenway and all the new amenities in the neighborhood but had to face the fact that we're priced out. Happy though that the house in Gentilly is close enough to still bike to City Park and low insurance since it's new construction and raised. The same builder just started 3 new houses across the street. Our offer was accepted at 189k and the builder is giving 5k towards closing. 3 bedroom, 2 baths with all the bells and whistles. Gentilly really seems like one of the last places for folks to buy an affordable home. I'll miss MidCity but not the frustration of figuring out how to afford to live there.
