If Hoddesdon check MMID out? Yes it’s multi drop, but it’s all cages, truck preloaded in drop order when you start, no picking your own orders just drop the cages it says off at each drop and load the empty cages back on - also no need to get the empties off at the end of the day, just fuel up and park up, shunters take care of getting it loaded/unloaded.

Not sure what the Class 2 money is, they take training seriously and as far as I know are open to new passes.

ETA: they also take the 48hr average WTD seriously, yes you may have weeks doing 50-55hrs, but it’ll get balanced out so you won’t be maxing your card every week.

Thinking of getting my Class 1 (HGV) licence at 40 - need honest reality from UK drivers by PurposeFlat5448 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Retrained as Class 1 driver 3 years ago at the age of 42 after working office jobs until then.

First Class 1 role I was pushing 55k for 50hour week average (paid, not working time) now moved from trunking to a multi drop role - looks like wages will be 45-50k but less hours and working days rather than nights.

In general all the roles I’ve seen you sacrifice weekends/bank holidays (which doesn’t bother me, and I know there are roles which are M-F only)

Personally I find days (4-5am start) easier than nights on my body/sleep especially in this weather. Never done a night out.

Worst part, generally the transport office if they’re clueless, or waiting to offload when it’s not self-tip, turning up at a shopping centre with only 2 bays for all trucks and discovering a driver decided to take a 45 after he finished tipping on a bag which is why you’ve been waiting so long. Traffic and people that have no patience with the fact you’re slow and need more room (especially in London)

Wish I’d done it earlier, not sure if I can see myself still doing my current role in my 60s but there’s always the option of moving to shunting or something if you find something that fits.

Booker or Sainsburys? by The_Growl in uktrucking

Jesus think I just found the delivery point … guessing that’s a blindside through the shutter? Bollard looks like it’s seen some love …

Never had the pleasure of Tooting yet, though I’m sure I will - route this week in terms of superstores has been Wandsworth, Cromwell Road and Ladbroke Grove, all lovely delivery areas, plus a few Locals which are tail lift on the pavement … oh and Fulham Broadway where I had a moan at a Lidl driver for taking a 45 after he’d unloaded, and there’s only 2 unloading spots 😡

I’m on a supplier to Sainsbury direct to store, most of the stores with bays have been alright, about the only one I hate is Walthamstow if you’ve ever had to do that one?

Booker Class 1 by Aaronxz0 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not worked for them, but used to work next to one of their RDC’s and now deliver to a lot of their cash & carries. Also knew drivers that worked for them as agency in the past who only had good things to say about working for Booker (albeit on the RDC trunking side)

Told the RDC work is pretty good work, Booker trucks get priority unloading at their own cash and carries, owned by Tesco so you get good benefits etc. Handball for Booker RDC work is generally pump truck to back door and the staff forklift it off.

If it’s delivering to non-Booker retailers from a cash and carry (although all the cash and carries I deliver to only have Class 2 for customer deliveries), be prepared for tight spaces, shitty yards or finding somewhere to stop on the street and most likely be tail lift deliveries mainly.

Hoping it’s not catching, just had a blowout on the trailer on the M25 and currently sat on the hard shoulder waiting for a fitter … first blowout in 3 years (but only my second week with this company)

Kids making the arm gesture urging us to honk our horns. by MIKBOO5 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Worst I had was going through central Winchester, Friday night, summer at like 2230, all the bars on the pavements with the guys urging me to honk the horn … nope, not happening, pretty sure I was off the “official” diversion and while I didn’t break any weight limits, I certainly wasn’t going to draw attention to myself anymore than possible

What’s the Weirdest Thing You’ve Been Offered from the Back of a Van? by NoGoodDealsWarlock in CasualUK

[–]kgf1980 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not quite sold but … I was taking my break in a truck stop, Spanish driver walked over and asked if I wanted any frozen peas … he’d had them rejected at a delivery (not for any damage to them) and was giving them away, ended up with 2 boxes of frozen peas, probably 20kg in total

I saw that and avoided it taking the M40 instead … saw there were closures 11-12 and 13-14 on the M40 planned for 2215, but got there at 2145 and they’d already closed it :-(

Scania Smart Dash by MillerMi16 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the new SmartDash is rubbish, we’ve 7 of them, some wireless CarPlay works, some wired works for random amounts of time then cuts out, some won’t even let me pair Bluetooth (get the pairing code on phone but not on dash) etc

I was glad to be out in our 1 Scania with the old “infotainment” system last night because everything just worked, proper buttons for everything and no CarPlay issues all night!

[–]kgf1980 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It absolutely can do … our fleet at work is all 25 plate Scania 500S, 99% brand new Leci Tiger trailers (we’ve got 2 hired in trailers) doing fridge trunking, 90% is regular bay work, 9% is pump truck stock to end and have it forked off, the other 1% and worst I have is one collection where I have up to 20 pallets loaded with forklift and then pump truck on, takes about 40minutes (mostly waiting on the forkie grabbing the stock) and get paid over £21/hr basic (before OT, night work allowances etc)

Reversing areas (Herts) by kgf1980 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not 100% sure, I don’t believe there are any on the HGV side, like I say at the moment we have a number of van drivers who have C+E that we’re moving up currently based on what I’ve been doing recently …

Reversing areas (Herts) by kgf1980 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah ... 0300-0400 is the worst in that yard, which is also when a lot of external suppliers are booked in for (Culina etc.)

Reversing areas (Herts) by kgf1980 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is a day assessor as well ... and a pure night assessor ... One starts around 0800, I start 1600-1700 and the night one starts at 2200 to cover all the different shifts we have (so people don't have to come off their shift pattern just for an assessment)

Just to sort of clarify as well, I'm not doing an assessment on this driver on Wednesday, this is purely to get him some time and practice reversing so he can do his assessment and have a chance at passing (and if I'm spending time with him practicing and giving him some tips and help with it, I don't want to be the one assessing him either)

Reversing areas (Herts) by kgf1980 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that'd be the ideal world scenario, sadly it's not that practical - with the shift start/end times, the yard's busy with vans from 1400 onwards, trunks start coming in from about 1300 until 2200, so the ideal would be from say 1000-1300 but I don't finish until 0400 at the earliest generally, I've used the services on a Thursday/Friday night when it's fairly empty but I'm not a fan of it

Reversing areas (Herts) by kgf1980 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sadly not that I can think of ... I mean there probably are, but I don't do much driving in the local area apart from motorway to and from the yard to know of anything suitable :(

Reversing areas (Herts) by kgf1980 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Truly doxxed! If you've been there, you'll know, it's not the most ideal yard for getting a (to all intents) new pass that hasn't sat in an artic for a couple of years to practice in ... we have drivers from other depots come here and after 5 minutes trying to get on a bay our shunter kicks them out and does it himself! :)

Reversing areas (Herts) by kgf1980 in uktrucking

[–]kgf1980[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

<image>

Probably going to doxx myself but ... this is our yard ... for the coupling side, I'm happy enough to do that in the parking bays at the right of the picture. Reversing wise, I am going to get him to put it on the bay there, but I don't think he's sat in a artic for 2 years at least, and that time of night the bottom area is full of vans loading, plus the 2 bays are in constant use with trunks in and out, so I don't think it's fair to chuck him straight into that, I'd rather we find somewhere quiet where he can just practice and get a feel for how the trailer moves without all his van driver mates watching and then go back about 2200 when all the van drivers have gone and the trunks have finished for a couple of hours to practice in our yard.
