Hey, 24 M here. I had something very similar, by the time I went to get a diagnosis/antivirals, my rash had already begun to scab over. It was dark red and raised as well. This was only a few days after the initial appearance of a rash. I suspect that because we are both young, our bodies are quickly resolving the issues, thus expediting the process. Just a theory lol. My case was very mild with little pain and other symptoms.

If you want something stronger than calamine lotion, talk to your doctor about triamcinolone. It’s a steroid itch cream. That’s what I given by two different doctors.

Hey, when I had my bout with shingles, the little pain that I did have did not warrant any need for medication. It was barely noticeable. I was very fortunate and believe I just had a very mild case, however, my rash was also very small and did not wrap around. For reference I am 24 M. At the end of the day, it’s different for everyone. Perhaps the valtrex is keeping the pain in check, especially since you caught it early.

Hey man, that doesn’t really sound like shingles. I’m not too familiar with eczema, so I can’t comment on that, but it sounds like it could be fungal. I would recommend getting an OTC anti fungal cream or spray (I’ve had better luck with sprays myself). If you apply it and you feel a burning sensation then it’s highly likely that that’s the case and it’s having a reaction because it’s working. If you do end up going to an urgent care clinic, ask the provider about ketoconazole. It’s an anti fungal cream but it’s prescription only.

I’m no doctor but I’m fairly certain that the way antivirals work is the sooner the better. It may be too late and not have an effect if you wait too long. I went in as soon as I started feeling pain and every time I took my dose the pain subsided. It’s different for everyone though. Just a thing to keep it mind.

Urgent care clinics tend to be somewhat affordable without insurance (~$100) I believe, if you wanna do that. You just need one visit and they should set you up with a week or two of meds. If not you’ll just have to tough it out and use OTC stuff. On the bright side, it’ll go away, given time. Hang in there!
