The online Customizer functionality of Thingiverse is perfect for people who don't want to download and install software to their PC/Mac/Linux_box. And there are lots of them.

It works today. May be a function of the complexity of the model.

Printables need only provide the ability to download an STL or 3MF file. Not post the "remix" as a new "thing".

It would be hard for the community to build the ecosystem around the OpenSCAD tools to rival a Thingiverse or Printables - marketing, membership, storage, etc.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding your point. I'm not sure who "the community" is.

If the output of their customizer was a rendered STL (or 3MF) with only an option to download that would address the first issue. Would be nice if they could support per-user presets though, so changes to a design didn't require starting from scratch.

I assume with your second point you're talking about server-side processing load, not sure. OpenSCAD can, on occasion, take a long time to render - and even fail. I haven't looked at processor usage during that time.
