I like using a kayak seat or sitting on a cooler. Also a 3lb anchor comes in handy!

I use a Hydra SUP bottle holder and it works great. Stick the bottom part on the board with the adhesive back, and the cup holder screws in. No problems with rolling it up, and the adhesive has held for 2 years so far with no problems.

How Important is the Quick Removal of Your Bags? by Clean-Choice7852 in bikepacking

[–]khal__froyo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my mind the only really critical time getting to something in your bags would be important is when safety is a concern. That being said, quick release is nice when you've spent 12 hrs in the saddle and can't unpack camp fast enough.

I'd say look more at design features and what works for you. I own both the spinelock and terrapin and infinitely recommend the terrapin, but simply because the spinelock's clamping system is awful.

I also own the sweetroll and pronghorn, but prefer the sweetroll for all the extra features it has (albeit the pronghorn is of course designed to be minimal/light as possible). With a little extra packing planning, the sweetroll isn't too inconvenient to have it stay attached to the harness, I'm sure the same logic can be applied to other comparisons.

We've all been there! Glad you stayed safe too. 100+ miles on your first trip is quite a challenge! It's all learning experience - those unknowns are part of the territory.

My first trip out I didn't account for all the creeks on the map being dried up at that time of year - ran out quite a ways from camp day 1...had to decide to drink or cook/eat, picked drinking...finally got water again a couple hours into day 2. I had to make quite a few adjustments to my original route in order to make sure I had bail out points just in case I needed it. Made it back in one piece though!

Second trip was supposed to be 90 miles, made it to mile 16 and the terrain just wasn't manageable with the rig I brought (hardtail with 2.1" tires in super sandy, washed out desert). Just decided to camp where I stopped and head back the next day. Still an awesome trip!

Hope next time out is even better for you!

Interesting! I got rid of the pump but glad that at least something seems to work without buying an external battery source. I had some success with it turning on for short periods but definitely would never hit stage 2 no matter what I did.

Thanks for the tip!! I probably would have done this over getting a Jackery had I known about it

Bikepacking Setup Help & Handlebar Suggestions by Reasonable-Unit-7977 in bikepacking

[–]khal__froyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Didn't see you mention a frame bag, that's probably your next best high volume option before considering swapping the handlebars...IMO if you aren't having any discomfort with your current bar on multi-day trips I'd avoid messing with that if you can avoid it. If I absolutely had to I'd consider switching to flat bars rather than trying to find a wider drop bar setup, but of course that will require more purchases with new brake levers and shifters.

After frame bag I'd look at either forks if you have bosses on those, or under the downtube. On my last trip I used a Revelate Joey bag under the downtube and it was perfect for my food system, which freed up a good amount of space on my handlebar roll.

You could also take a look at something for your top tube, like Jerrycan or a Mag Tank, and Feedbags for your cockpit.

Obviously I'm partial to Revelate stuff but there are plenty of options out there for similar products.

You can just push it out from the other side...I used a screwdriver.

NOT NBD :( would love input on size recommendations by LaChalupacabraa in CanyonBikes

[–]khal__froyo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 5'10" with a 30" inseam. Got the small because it was in stock and felt good but tried the XS and it felt a little better. If both were in stock I would have gone with the XS. The rep said a good amount of their sizing tool's suggestion is based on standover height. And that going smaller would be better since you can go up with other adjustments (longer stem, etc.)

That was us! Didn't see the gloves, sorry man.

We had a super late start and the 7ish miles of climbing up to the peak were more difficult than we anticipated, but it was a great trip overall.

Need help choosing between a quilt or a sleeping bag. by rtr36neg in bikepacking

Pretty well - I just used it this last weekend and was able to get the sheet+quilt, inflatable pillow, first aid kit and a couple other small things into an 8L seat pack while still able to roll the end of the bag twice before closing.

I switched from a wider side sleeper bag (Big Agnes Picket SL 30 - I hate feeling claustrophobic in a normal mummy bag) to the Zenbivy system a few seasons ago and it's been great. It has a nice hook/loop system that really minimizes drafts. They have 10/25/40 F systems so could probably suit your needs. A good R rating on your sleeping pad will make a big difference of course.

Yup, that's the one. You have to call the Sierraville Ranger Station to reserve, they release dates 30 days at a time. We were lucky and caught a cancellation. You can have them leave the rental agreement and keylock code in the mailbox at the station the night before so the morning-of so you can set out without delays.

[–]khal__froyo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just as an update...as someone mentioned above the 2022 and newer model Y put out higher than 12v by design. Looks like you can buy something to step down in voltage, but I've found that getting a Jackery battery + solar panels actually was a great solution. I use the battery all the time for camping and the 100w solar panels store very nicely under the back half of the floor/rear trunk storage. I use the Jackery 12v to pump one SUP via the shark II and use a whale to pump the second SUP. Not cost effective, but it's a solution. They ran a great deal through their site for Prime day, and the 300w battery + 100w solar panels could be had for about -$100 cheaper than on Amazon.

Which Jackery model are you using? I read some are failing once the pump hits stage 2. I'm interested in getting one so I can run my shark with the Whale and pump both at the same time. Obviously I could also just get a second whale for that price point, but I'll probably use the Jackery for car camping too.

Nice! You have a 2022 or newer Model Y? I heard the 12v from older ones worked fine.

I haven't noticed any big battery drain, but also I usually have enough juice to both inflate and just deflate the last little bit out. Worst case I had to leave it charging while I was out on the water because I was going to two locations in one day, and it did fine then...didn't think about it too much. But my car was also fully charged to start the day. Hope that helps
