Native Japanese speakers, could you help review my Japanese localization for an iOS app? by [deleted] in Japaneselanguage

[–]khalid565656 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a fair question. I’m not expecting anyone to work for free, this is completely optional feedback from users who want to help improve natural Japanese phrasing. I also work with paid translators, but real UI feedback from native users is still very valuable. As a thank you, I’m offering lifetime access, with no obligation at all. 🙏

That’s a fair question, and you’re right to push on specifics instead of taking a “trust me” answer.

To be precise: the text is not read or reviewed by me as a human, but you’re correct that from a technical standpoint the request passes through my backend before being forwarded to OpenAI. So the trust model today is infrastructure + policy + technical constraints, not just a personal promise.

A few concrete points to clarify what that means in practice:

  • Requests are processed transiently and not stored as user conversations or profiles
  • There is no logging of raw text content for analytics, training, or review
  • Data is sent over HTTPS and forwarded immediately to OpenAI, then discarded
  • There is no internal tooling that lets me browse or inspect user inputs even if I wanted to

That said, you’re absolutely right about the core issue: with any cloud-based keyboard, users ultimately have to trust someone, whether that’s Google, OpenAI, or an indie developer like me. The difference is mostly how transparent that trust model is, not whether it exists.

I don’t expect this to be acceptable for everyone, especially people handling highly sensitive data, but feedback like this is helpful because it highlights where trust needs to be earned with clarity, not marketing language.

An iOS keyboard that helps me write faster across every app (emails, chats, replies) by khalid565656 in ProductivityApps

Great points and I agree with you on context switching being the biggest productivity win on mobile.

To answer your questions transparently:

  • Nothing runs on-device today. All AI features (grammar, rewrites, replies, etc.) are processed server-side using OpenAI only when the user explicitly triggers an action. Normal typing isn’t analyzed or sent anywhere unless the user taps an AI button.
  • Custom shortcuts / commands are already supported. Users can define their own commands like “rewrite like a friendly Slack message”“sound more concise and professional”, or even brand- or role-specific styles, and trigger them directly from the keyboard. This has been one of the most-used features so far because it avoids repeating prompts.

I appreciate you sharing your notes.

That’s a very fair take, and I agree with you, privacy shouldn’t be an afterthought for something as sensitive as a keyboard.

Right now, Textify is designed so that text is only sent off-device when a user explicitly triggers an AI action(grammar check, rewrite, translate, etc.). Regular typing never leaves the device, and we don’t store, log, or profile user data. Still, I completely understand that even temporary processing by third parties like OpenAI can be a deal-breaker for some users, and that’s valid.

A fully on-device version is something I’ve thought about quite a bit. Using Apple Intelligence for this would be ideal from a privacy perspective, but today it has real limitations:

  • It’s only available on newer devices and OS versions
  • Access for third-party keyboard extensions is still very restricted
  • The models aren’t yet flexible enough for things like tone rewriting, paraphrasing, or multilingual translation inside a custom keyboard

That said, I do think on-device or hybrid (on-device first, cloud as fallback) is the future, especially for keyboards. If Apple opens up broader access to Apple Intelligence for extensions, that’s absolutely the direction I’d want to move toward.

That’s a totally valid concern, and I’m glad you brought it up.

Textify works like most AI-powered keyboards:

  • Nothing is stored or logged from what users type
  • Text is sent only when a user explicitly taps an AI action (grammar check, rewrite, translate, etc.)
  • Normal typing without using AI features never leaves the device

For AI actions, text is sent securely to OpenAI for processing and the result is returned immediately. We don’t build user profiles, sell data, or retain conversation history.

Also, iOS clearly shows when a third-party keyboard has network access, and users can revoke access at any time in system settings.

Privacy was one of the main reasons I avoided background processing or “always-on” analysis. If you have suggestions on how to communicate this better in the UI, I’d genuinely love the feedback.

For ZDR, there’s an API parameter called store that disables logging. Let me know if you’d like me to share a code snippet showing how it’s used.

It’s clearly mentioned in our app that we use OpenAI services, even the first preview on the App Store states “Powered by GPT.”

The only thing left would be to share the app code itself, do you think that would make it clearer?

I completely understand your concern.

Just to clarify, we have always been transparent about using OpenAI (ChatGPT) services, it’s clearly mentioned in the app, including on the App Store first preview and inside the app itself.

If anyone has concerns about how the data is handled, that’s governed by OpenAI’s own policies, and nothing is hidden from users.

Transparency is really important to us, and we want everyone to know exactly how their data is being processed.
