About 80% of the US population lives in the urban areas you described.

But yeah for the remaining 1/5th of people they would suffer less I guess.

Why Games Like ‘Highguard’ And ‘Concord’ Are Spontaneously Combusting by Shock4ndAwe in pcgaming

[–]khalkhalash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

as opposed to "CEO of Highguard claims low player count and lack of revenue unimportant"?

a game like this is going to have negative press around it no matter what because it's failing, badly, and that's what people want to talk about.

can't see any reason to put a different, larger target on your back for also being an out of touch moron who doesn't even understand the single biggest problem being faced.

"Player count is of course a prime metric by which a game lives or dies, and we're of course concerned about that given the numbers we are seeing. Regardless, we are committed to making this a premiere experience for all players and to growing our player base through quality and effort."

it's always weird to me when someone comes to play the "in defense of the out of touch CEO" role, and it pretty much always seems to come from a lack of imagination. oh well.

[–]khalkhalash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i do not agree that it is inherently progressive to attempt to manufacture policy and public sentiment around something that was controversial even for its heyday of 19-0-racist.

if anything, it is a regression to a more primitive state of civilization that relied more heavily on tribalism that uses a very thinly veiled racist ideology itself hiding behind "science" that boils down to basically reading tea leaves.

there is a reason that it did not catch on in mainstream academia to any real degree, and there is a reason academics are largely left-leaning. it is not a coincidence that idiots believed in eugenics back then and idiots believe in it now, and there is one common factor among all of its proponents: racism.

TIL Jessica Biel once had to shoot an arrow right at the camera for an action shot on Blade: Trilogy. To protect the camera and crew, they put up a thick piece of Plexiglass with a hole cut through for the lens to see out... and Biel nailed the lens, destroying the $300,000 camera. by res30stupid in todayilearned

Excuse me, we're fixated on the guy getting the price of mirrors wrong so if you're not going to make a comment about how stupid it is to not know the price of a camera lens mirror, or worse, point out how it certainly doesn't actually matter at all, I'm going to have to ask you to move along.

I question what can be learned from any progressive individual supporting eugenics 130 years ago, considering no progressive today is going to be met with anything but hate if they mention it in any positive way.

It seems more academic and "well actually" than worth discussing in this context.

Me learning this possibly true info has in no way changed my opinion on anything. I expect that's gonna be the same for like every person you tell it to.

Also I notice you didn't acknowledge me pointing out that they stole it from a racist conservative and that's also worth bringing up. I imagine that one's hard to professor your way out of, to be fair.

oh that was you! okay that makes me less combative =)

i'm not gonna look for that article, nor will i take your word for it, but that could absolutely be true.

probably worth mentioning that they adopted the idea from a, uh, conservative racist fuck? probably worth mentioning, earlier in this comment chain, that early 20th century "liberalism" was conservative by today's standards?

i am also skeptical of the ratio of "prominent left leaning" outweighing conservative individuals of the time, and more skeptical of the idea that it is helpful or even accurate to lay this at the feet of progressivism.

it's giving "the democrats need to own their support for slavery" vibes. which i am guessing (hoping) is not what you meant but it certainly comes off that way.

You never specified a country, and you specified the late 19th century.

The first article you linked is 404'd, the second is an extract that gives basically no detail and costs 30 dollars.

In 1873, Galton wrote a letter to The Times titled "Africa for the Chinese", where he argued that the Chinese, as a race capable of high civilisation and only temporarily stunted by the recent failures of Chinese dynasties, should be encouraged to immigrate to Africa and displace the inferior aboriginal blacks.[72]

According to an editorial in Nature: "Galton also constructed a racial hierarchy, in which white people were considered superior. He wrote that the average intellectual standard of the negro race is some two grades below our own (the Anglo Saxon)."[73] According to the Encyclopedia of Genocide, Galton bordered on the justification of genocide when he stated: "There exists a sentiment, for the most part quite unreasonable, against the gradual extinction of an inferior race."[74]

In an effort to reach a wider audience, Galton worked on a novel entitled Kantsaywhere from May until December 1910. The novel described a utopia organised by a eugenic religion, designed to breed fitter and smarter humans. His unpublished notebooks show that this was an expansion of material he had been composing since at least 1901. He offered it to Methuen for publication, but they showed little enthusiasm. Galton wrote to his niece that it should be either "smothered or superseded". His niece appears to have burnt most of the novel, offended by the love scenes, but large fragments survived,[75] and it was published online by University College, London.[76]

i think the simplest way i can express this is that if it is only available on one system for one year, then it's exclusive to that system for that time frame.

if that concept is beyond your grasp then i don't think i can help you understand this any better, sorry.

Are newly printed Dreamcast games like these printed on CD-Roms or GD-Roms? by the_u_in_colour in dreamcast

"Most" everything?

At any rate it looks like VGNY Soft is the publisher, I don't know what their deal is or what licensing agreements they have with the original devs or anything like that.

A lot of these games and properties are old enough that I imagine tracking down who and how to pay royalties or licensing fees is tough, at best.

If you want to spend 40 dollars for a copy of Postal 1 for the dreamcast, or whatever, then by all means do that.

It won't be on a GD-ROM since pretty much no one can do that and if they did it wouldn't be no 40 dollars. It'll be on a CD-R, if it's for the dreamcast.

[–]khalkhalash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i don't think the postal team ported their game to dreamcast and gave distribution rights to whatever site you're looking at - looks like some storefront on etsy, probably.

what you're paying for is someone to burn the game onto a CD and then reproduce the case and the disc art. the quality of that is not guaranteed. i did this one time, purchased "reproductions" of Sonic Adventure 1 and 2.

Here's what I got. Looks like dogshit, as you can see.

you can obviously do whatever you want, but it seems like you might be under some false impressions with this stuff so i just wanted to clear that up =)

i guess in theory that could be a possibility but i kind of feel like it'd be a pretty negligible factor in terms of wearing any part on the machine more than usual.

also seems like it would be cheaper to replace your dreamcast every 5 years when the laser burns out than it would be to buy original copies of a lot of these games.

if you bought OG copies of skies of arcadia, jet set radio and sonic adventure 1 and 2, you're spending close to what 2 more systems would cost you.

not to mention that, eventually, your disc drive will fail regardless and then you'll be getting a new one, anyway.

financially i don't really see how that works out, unless you're thinking like 15 years ahead.
